    Morvan syndrome following B-cell lymphoma

    No full text
Morvan syndrome is a rare autoimmune disease named after the French physician Augustin Marie Morvan. It is characterized by multiple, irregular contractions of the long muscles, weakness, pruritus, hyperhidrosis, insomnia, and delirium. Here, we describe a 17-year-old young man, previously diagnosed with B-cell lymphoma, who presented with multiple asynchronous fasciculations of the long muscles of his lower extremities accompanied by numbness. The patient responded initially to pulse corticosteroids with diminution of the fasciculations. He achieved complete remission following 7 consecutive, monthly intravenous immunoglobulin injections. The present case is described in the context of the available literature. © The Author(s) 2010.Barber PA, 2000, NEUROLOGY, V54, P771; FISCHERP.C, 1974, REV NEUROL, V130, P111; GIL R, 1984, REV NEUROL, V140, P728; HALBACH M, 1987, J NEUROL, V234, P433, DOI 10.1007-BF00314093; HAUG BA, 1989, CLIN NEUROL NEUROSUR, V91, P53, DOI 10.1016-S0303-8467(89)80008-3; IWASAKI Y, 1990, EUR ARCH PSY CLIN N, V239, P335, DOI 10.1007-BF01735061; Josephs KA, 2004, J CLIN NEUROPHYSIOL, V21, P440, DOI 10.1097-00004691-200411000-00008; Kimura J., 1989, ELECTRODIAGNOSIS DIS; Lee EK, 1998, J NEUROL NEUROSUR PS, V65, P857, DOI 10.1136-jnnp.65.6.857; Liguori R, 2001, BRAIN, V124, P2417, DOI 10.1093-brain-124.12.2417; Madrid A, 1996, J NEUROL, V243, P350, DOI 10.1007-BF00868410; Morvan A., 1890, GAZ HEBD MED CHIR, V27, P173; VERNAY D, 1986, ARTHRITIS RHEUM, V29, P1413, DOI 10.1002-art.17802911190

Skyrmion-skyrmion and skyrmion-edge repulsions in skyrmion-based racetrack memory

    No full text
Magnetic skyrmions are promising for building next-generation magnetic memories and spintronic devices due to their stability, small size and the extremely low currents needed to move them. In particular, skyrmion-based racetrack memory is attractive for information technology, where skyrmions are used to store information as data bits instead of traditional domain walls. Here we numerically demonstrate the impacts of skyrmion-skyrmion and skyrmion-edge repulsions on the feasibility of skyrmion-based racetrack memory. The reliable and practicable spacing between consecutive skyrmionic bits on the racetrack as well as the ability to adjust it are investigated. Clogging of skyrmionic bits is found at the end of the racetrack, leading to the reduction of skyrmion size. Further, we demonstrate an effective and simple method to avoid the clogging of skyrmionic bits, which ensures the elimination of skyrmionic bits beyond the reading element. Our results give guidance for the design and development of future skyrmion-based racetrack memory

Differents forms of revolutionary action spring up in the Central Morvan area in the mid-nineteenth century and in particular under the Second Republic. The author explains these both by the change of political régime and by the circumstances of the economic depression which hit agriculture and even more forestry. But the study also stresses, as a part of any explanation, the importance of the very unequalitarian land structures, the small farmers and the poor are predominant by their very numbers and to understand these phenomena, their fierce indépendance has to be taken into account. The article evokes the nature of these actions: rural peurs, the taxing of corn, conflicts over the forest, actions against the nobles. But the many memories of the great Revolution must also be taken into account as 1789 and 1793 remained in the collective memory of simple people; they were revived and recalled by the village leaders from 1848 to 1851. In the main, this nineteenth century revolution is a repetition of the 1789 one, This is revealed by the development of the people's actions in a more and more revolutionary direction.

This article deals with two translations by Françoise Morvan from English into French: Where the Sidewalk Ends by Shel Silverstein (1974) and Little Boy Brown by Isobel Harris (1949).The first book, a collection of poems illustrated by the author himself, is written in a delightful language which revels in the English sounds and which, very much in the spirit of Edward Lear’s limericks, prefers rhyme over meaning. The second book, written by Isobel Harris and illustrated by André François, relates the story of “Little Brown”. The narrative, that of a four-and-a-half-year-old child, borrows childish language patterns without ever using conventional turns of phrase. The experience of reading these two books shows the singularity of their authors’ writing and the importance they attach to oral language. We shall investigate how translation transposes such creativity. Françoise Morvan, who translated both books, has managed to do so through well-chosen repetitions, tailored inversions and coinages. Thus, we shall study precise examples to prove how she recreated texture and produced a clashing yet finely chiselled translation

An irreducible plural: Franciscan observances in Europe (15th century)

    No full text
The paper argues that within the Franciscan Order, the question of regular Observance raised specific problems which are unknown in the other religious orders. It highlights the place of Observance within Franciscan history (and the issue of 'fidelity' to Francis and to the Rule) and discusses the various Franciscan reactions to the demand of a strictior observantia of the Rule (beyond the traditional regularis observantia). The paper underscores the main trends of historiography on the Observance, from chronicles and literature of the fifteenth century to the ecclesiastical erudition of the Early Modern Age, up to the most recent historiography. The author suggests that, above all when considering Franciscan Observance at a European scale, it is appropriate to speak in plural of Franciscan observances. Considering a wide variety of sources (both documentary and literary), the author reflects on the very meaning of 'observance' in the context of Franciscan history. She then defines the characteristics of Observant spirituality, with a clear distinction between the Italici patres (and the Cismontanian area entrusted to them) and the other European contexts, mainly beyond the Alps.

Velocity Calibration of Doppler Current Profiler Transducers

    No full text
Doppler current profilers are used in oceanography to measure oceanic circulation but also in hydrology to calculate the flow of rivers. They allow the retrieval of water mass profiles in terms of velocity and direction. Direction is obtained via an electronic compass and tilt sensors, while velocity is obtained by measuring Doppler pulse shifts back-scattered by particles located in water cells allocated along the instrument’s measurement range. Current meters are usually tested in towing basins or hydrodynamic channels, but these facilities present limits in terms of the measurement range, particles concentration and time costs. This paper presents a novel method developed to test the trueness of these velocity measurements in the laboratory, along with the uncertainty of this test and the results obtained with current meters and stand-alone profilers. The method is based on the measurement of the frequency of pulses emitted by each transducer of the instrument independently, and on the simulation of received echoes by a variable frequency sinusoidal signal
