Liana Abundance Patterns: The Role of Ecological Filters during Development
We studied three different size classes of liana abundance representing proxies for three different life stages and aimed to identify the sequence of ecological filters that have led to current patterns of liana abundance. We tested the relationship between vegetation structure (including antagonistic support types) and soil texture on liana abundance, using 40 plots (1 and 0.25ha) set at least 1km apart, and distributed over 64km 2 in a Central Amazonian terra firme forest. Three support types were considered: palms, thin trees and an index of vegetation structure. Liana size classes responded hierarchically to ecological filters: larger size classes were progressively less associated with the environmental variables, while different aspects of vegetation structure were related to individual size classes. This hierarchical pattern suggests that selection mechanisms change throughout liana life cycles. Our results show that vegetation structure is an important predictor of liana abundance at a mesoscale and highlights the importance of considering the spatial structure in studies of tropical liana communities. © 2010 The Author(s). Реформулировки в тексте комментария к российскому законодательству в сфере интеллектуальной собственности (Reformulirovki v tekste kommentarija k rossijskomu zakonodatel'stvu v sfere intellektual'noj sobstvennosti)
The paper studies the linguistic value of reformulation of language in the commentaries accompanying legal texts, to make them comprehensible to non-lawyers. The author has analysed the text of Chapter Four of the Civil Code of the Russian Federation, which covers Intellectual Property Rights, and the text of Methodical Guidelines, regarding their implementation, published by the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the Russian Federation which is aimed at improving the level of legal competence of businesspeople. The author shows that in this type of legal metatext, when interpreting the intention of the legislator the most common reformulation methods are exemplification, renaming, syntactic simplification and rearrangement, enumeration and precision
Effects of Climate, Soil, Topography and Disturbance on Liana Prevalence
\ua9 2024 The Author(s). Ecology and Evolution published by John Wiley & Sons Ltd.Lianas (woody vines and climbing monocots) are increasing in abundance in many tropical forests with uncertain consequences for forest functioning and recovery following disturbances. At a global scale, these increases are likely driven by disturbances and climate change. Yet, our understanding of the environmental variables that drive liana prevalence at regional scales is incomplete and geographically biased towards Latin America. To address this gap, we present a comprehensive study evaluating the combined effects of climate, soil, disturbance and topography on liana prevalence in the Australian Wet Tropics. We established 31 20
7 20 m vegetation plots along an elevation gradient in low disturbance (canopy closure ≥ 75%) and high disturbance (canopy closure ≤ 25%) forest stands. In these plots, all tree and liana (defined as all woody dicot vines and climbing monocots, i.e., rattans) stems ≥ 1 cm DBH were measured and environmental data were collected on climate, soil and topography. Generalised linear models were used with multi-model averaging to quantify the relative effects of the environmental variables on measures of liana prevalence (liana–tree basal area ratio, woody vine basal area and stem density and rattan stem density). Liana prevalence decreased with elevation but increased with disturbance and mean annual precipitation. The increase in the liana–tree ratio with precipitation was more pronounced for highly disturbed sites. Like other tropical regions, disturbance is an important driver of liana prevalence in Australian rainforests and appears to interact with climate to increase liana–tree ratios. The observed increase in liana–tree ratio with precipitation contrasts findings from elsewhere but is confounded by correlated changes in elevation and temperature, which highlights the importance of regional studies. Our findings show that forests with high disturbance and climatic conditions favourable to lianas are where lianas most likely to outcompete trees and impede forest recovery

Riflessioni critiche sul concetto di appropriatezza nel De musica dello Pseudo Plutarco (de mus. 32-36)
After a general introduction concerning the role of music in education and its ethical weight in ancient Greek tought, this study is largely focused on paragraphs 32-36 of pseudo-Plutarchean De musica. The thesis is that Aristoxenus would not be the direct source of this section. The tradition here seems much more complicated, and the source could be defined aristoxenic only in part, since the whole section suggests influences from differently oriented models. The idea is put forward of more than one author, with the prominence of a basically technical (Hellenistic?) source, mainly interested on aesthetical and practical sides of music rather than on its ethical effects
The Concept of ‘Brotherhood’ in Taras Ševčenko’s Poetry = Il concetto di fratellanza nel testo poetico di Taras Ševčenko
The Author analyzes the linguo-culturological idea of “brotherhood” in both Ukrainian language and Russian language works by Ševčenko. This word and its related metaphorical meanings are a central poetic instrument of Ševčenko’s literary works and connect them with the ancient traditions of Ukrainian folklore and religious beliefs. Together with the opposite idea of “discordance”, the idea of “brotherhood” is an important tool for the mythological reconstruction of Ukrainian history and of the poet’s philosophical and ideological message. A lexical analysis of the concept of “brotherhood” indicates that the term was very frequent and had numerous nuances in Ukrainian poems, while it was rather rare and semantically limited in the Russian works. The Author offers a lexicographic definition of the key-words, then describes their linguistic function, and syntagmatic, paradygmatic and associative relationships with semantic analysis procedures. Among the associated ideas, national and social liberty are dominant. Here too the differentiation of Ukrainian and Russian works is evident: the conceptualization of the associated terms is similar when it invests the Christian semantic field, but is significantly different when it concerns historical and social issues
Michelle Alfano on Her Memoir, The Unfinished Dollhouse
Liana Cusmano’s interview with Toronto author Michelle Alfano offers reflections on gender identity and living through a child’s transitioning. The act of writing helped Alfano overcome the distress she felt during this difficult time. In her memoir The Unfinished Dollhouse, Michelle Alfano recounts the journey she underwent in accepting and embracing her son’s transgender identity. From tell-tale signs in early childhood and the mental and physical afflictions in the early teen years, to the reactions of family and friends and the final steps in a social and medical transition from female to male, Alfano explores the thoughts and feelings she experienced over the years as her son, River, fought to be his truest self

A dataset of Neotropical liana research focusing on the strategies of control for forest restoration and management practices
Abstract Key message Forest fragmentation leads to a micro-environmental condition that favors the proliferation of liana, which infest trees, compete with them, and reduce their performance. To report the state of the art of the main actions to manage this structural component of tropical forests, we surveyed the control strategies in the literature in the last 71 years, highlighting research goals, tree-climber interactions, management, restoration, and conservation. Dataset access is at https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.6678112 . Associated metadata are available at https://metadata-afs.nancy.inra.fr/geonetwork/srv/fre/catalog.search#/metadata/712ff481-dfa2-4ddb-b4fa-fcbd7c517842 Context Lianas (woody vines) are considered structural parasites of tropical trees because they start their development as terrestrial seedlings but need to reach a tree canopy for higher light availability. The tree-liana coexistence usually can damage tree species, thus removing lianas has been suggested as an alternative to reinforce forest regeneration. Aims The dataset compilation begun during the first author doctoral work and a first dataset on neotropical lianas was published ( https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.4050477 ) in 2020. The present dataset ( https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.6678112 ) presents an update of the 2020 dataset with additional amend (published articles from 2018 to 2021) and enhanced metadata descriptions. Our aim is providing an updated database extracted from scientific literature compiling information related to the effect of lianas on tree and forest structure and diversity, and to contribute to improve decision making on forest restoration and management. Methods We made a systematic literature review on lianas in the Neotropical region (native or restored) from 1950 to 2021. First, we selected studies on liana management and described each paper according to the following topics: vegetation status, positive (P), and negative (N) effects of lianas on each species, the species in focus, and the suggested management strategy. Results Almost 83% of the studies pointed out tree-climber interactions as negative to trees. Cutting was the management strategy adopted in 92% of the studies. Controlled burning, enrichment, and selective cutting were adopted in only one paper. Rainy and seasonal forests were the vegetation types with more studied sites (20 and 17 respectively). Only one study suggested enhancing forest diversity through direct seeding of lianas. Four studies evaluated the impact of lianas on forest diversity and forest fauna. Conclusion The data collected showed the different impacts of liana management on the diversity and structure of tropical forests. It can endorse environmental control and management practices and evaluate the consequences of these techniques in recovering forests or improving timber production
Acquisition of mathematical skills through fairy tales for 4-5-year-old children
Bachelor’s thesis theme: "Acquisition of mathematical skills through fairy tales for 4-5-year-old children". Objective of the study: To study and analyze the acquisition of mathematical skills of 4-5-year- old children in preschool with the help of a fairy tales. In the theoretical part, analyzing the works of I. Helmane, I. Žogla, R. Garleja, I. Kangro and other Latvian and foreign psychologists and teachers, I studied the concept of skills and mathematical skills side by side and their acquisition methods in preschool. The essence of fairy tales is described, as well as the possibilities of their use in the process of developing mathematical skills of preschool children. In the empirical part of the work, 4-5-year-old children are observed and interviewed, as well as their initial level of development in mathematical skills is evaluated. In order to promote the above-mentioned skills in the pedagogical pilot work, the fairy tales written by the author of the work were used, but in the end, the data obtained during the research were processed and analyzed. The analysis of the research results allow to follow the dynamics of the development of mathematical skills: comparing the data obtained at the beginning and the end of the empirical research, we can safely talk about the tendency to increment in development. In conclusion, fairy tales help 4-5-year-old children to learn the subject matter provided in mathematics lessons easier if they include the content of mathematics lessons and correspond to children's development trends.
