No full textDavid H. Stam delivered a talk at a special dinner of the Grolier Club on May 11, 2009 describing a 2005/2006 exhibition of polar literature and artifacts. The exhibition was planned as a harbinger of the Fourth International Polar Year which took place in 2007/2008. The exhibition included items from collector Bassett Jones. Jones was a consulting engineer who graduated from MIT in 1898 and became a a major collector of books, manuscripts, and ephemera dealing with the Polar Regions. He was a member of both the Grolier Club and the Explorers Club. The talk describes Bassett Jones\u27 two exhibitions of his polar materials, the large one at the Grolier Club in early 1932 and a smaller one at the Architectural League in January 1941. Jones was a prickly, interesting character and the talk delves into his colorful life

No full textDissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, Centro de Comunicação e Expressão, Programa de Pós-graduação em Letras/Inglês e Literatura Correspondente, Florianópolis, 2009O presente trabalho trata de questões relacionadas à construção de uma identidade cultural brasileira no filme Central do Brasil, dirigido por Walter Salles, a partir da perspectiva fílmica e também relacionada aos debates críticos que o filme gerou em resenhas americanas e brasileiras. Argumenta-se que o filme é uma metáfora da busca por identidade, argumento usado pelo próprio diretor. Esta busca se dá no nível pessoal, no caso das personagens principais, Dora e Josué, e nacional, já que o filme encoraja a associação da jornada das personagens a uma busca pela identidade nacional brasileira. A pesquisa buscou encontrar os elementos fílmicos que remetem a essa hipótese de que o filme é uma metáfora da busca por identidade, bem como de que forma (e se) os debates críticos gerados a partir do filme identificaram essa questão da busca. Para teorias de identidade, autores como Stuart Hall, Zygmunt Bauman e Robert Stam foram usados. Para teoria fílmica foram usados trabalhos de David Bordwell e Marcel Martin. Para estudos em cinema brasileiro, leituras de trabalhos de Luiz Zanin Oricchio, Robert Stam e Sidney Ferreira Leite foram realizadas. A análise mostrou que o filme, de fato, traz elementos que podem ser relacionados à metáfora da busca por identidade.This research addresses questions related to the construction of a Brazilian cultural identity in the film Central Station, directed by Walter Salles, from the perspective of film form, and concerning the critical debates prompted by the film in Brazilian and American reviews. The film is argued to be, by the director himself, a metaphor for the search for identity, both personal, in the case on the main characters, Dora and Josué, and national, since the film encourages the association of the characters' journey to a search for a Brazilian identity. What this research sought to find were the elements in film form that relate to this hypothesis of the film as a metaphor for the search of identity, and how and if the critical debates prompted by the film identified the issue of identity. For the issue of identity, critics such as Stuart Hall, Robert Stam, and Zygmunt Bauman were invoked. For Film Studies, theorists such as Bordwell and Marcel Martin were used. For readings in Brazilian Cinema, the works of Luiz Zanin Oricchio, Robert Stam and Sidney Ferreira Leite were used. The analysis showed that the film, indeed, brings elements that can be related to a metaphor for the search for identity

Cult: A Composite Novel

The first component of the thesis is a composite novel called Cult which falls into two parts with seven narratives in each. Part 1 tracks the protagonist, Ellen, from her first involvement with the cult through to her eventually leaving it. Although fiction, the first half of the book answers the kinds of questions the author is asked when people discover that she was once a sannyasin (a follower of the guru Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh). While the experiences of meditation, group therapy and communal living are all faithfully rendered within the stories, the need for strong characters, narrative drive and a lightness of touch takes precedence.
Part 2 picks up Ellen’s story some twenty or so years later and explores what becomes of her in middle age. It also looks at other groups in society, such as academia, the law and the internet dating community which each have their own jargon, hierarchies, rituals and rules but are not considered to be cults.
The book examines the question raised in the Epigraph, ‘how do we be together when we feel so alone’ with a focus on relationships other than the familial and the romantic.
Collisions, Chasms and Connections: a Performative Exploration of the Composite Novel Form
The second part of the thesis is both a critical and creative response to three contemporary American books: Olive Kitteridge by Elizabeth Strout; A Visit from the Goon Squad by Jennifer Egan; and Legend of a Suicide by David Vann. The critical element comprises a close reading of the three books; a chronological reconstruction of their overarching storylines; and a consideration of what their authors have said about writing the books. It concludes that, in the composite novel, the simultaneous presentation of multiple views and storylines operate much like a 3D image to give the impression of depth to the characters and situations rendered. The creative element of the essay is a playful and personal response to the texts
Polymer multimode waveguide optical and electronic PCB manufacturing
No full textThe paper describes the research in the £1.3 million IeMRC Integrated Optical and Electronic Interconnect PCB Manufacturing (OPCB) Flagship Project in which 8 companies and 3 universities carry out collaborative research and which was formed and is technically led by the author. The consortium’s research is aimed at investigating a range of fabrication techniques, some established and some novel, for fabricating polymer multimode waveguides from several polymers, some formulations of which are being developed within the project. The challenge is to develop low cost waveguide manufacturing techniques compatible with commercial PCB manufacturing and to reduce their alignment cost. The project aims to take the first steps in making this hybrid optical waveguide and electrical copper track printed circuit board disruptive technology widely available by establishing and incorporating waveguide design rules into commercial PCB layout software and transferring the technology for fabricating such boards to a commercial PCB manufacturer. To focus the research the project is designing an optical waveguide backplane to tight realistic constraints, using commercial layout software with the new optical design rules, for a demonstrator into which 4 daughter cards are plugged, each carrying an aggregate of 80 Gb/s data so that each waveguide carries 10 Gb/s

Product development with a focus on attractive product expression: an analysis of case studies
No full textCreating outstanding products is vital for a company's endurance in competitive markets. A mix of functionality, ergonomics, aesthetics, symbols and price aspects all play a role in making a product desirable.Some products carry a personal meaning for its user. Others communicate its user's identity or the company's brand image. This study concentrates on communicative and meaningful aspects in a product's design. It examines how the creation of a communicative design occurs during the new product development process. The present research has an exploratory nature. For the field research, the case study method was chosen and a guideline for semi-directed interviews developed. This interview guideline was used to analyse multiple product development projects in two distinct companies. In two projects, specific attention was given to communicative aspects in the product‘s design. These two projects are examined in this paper.In the two selected projects, the product development teams carefully studied the users' preferences for aesthetics and product messages. A user-centred approach was used in both development processes. The choice to purposely improve the communicative value of the product's design was on the one hand influenced by the limited possibilities to create other advantages, such as improving the product's functionality or reducing its cost price. David Cohen de Lara y su léxico Ir David: sobre algunas fuentes
No full textThe article proposes to analyze the composition of Ir David (Amsterdam, 1638), a glossary of Greek and Latin words existing in rabbinical literature. Its author, David Cohen de Lara mentions in the prologue the sources used but omits the one of Thesaurus Linguae Graecae of H. Stephanus, whose presence is indisputable, as shown by some examples that are transcribed in the work. The mention of Flavius Josephus is significant since it allows to conjecture the method of work of the author. El artículo propone analizar la composición de Ir David (Ámsterdam, 1638), un glosario de las palabras griegas y latinas existentes en la literatura rabínica. Su autor, David Cohen de Lara menciona en el prólogo las fuentes utilizadas pero omite la de Thesaurus Linguae Graecae de H. Stephanus, cuya presencia es indiscutible, como lo demuestran algunos ejemplos que se transcriben en el trabajo. La mención de Flavio Josefo es significativa ya que permite conjeturar el método de trabajo del autor.
