Soil moisture evaluation over the Argentine Pampas using models satellite estimations and in - situ measurements
Study region: The Pampas region is located in the central-east part of Argentina, and is one of the most productive agricultural regions of the world under rainfed conditions.
Study focus: This study aims at examining how different Land Surface Models (LSMs) and satellite estimations reproduce daily surface and root zone soil moisture variability over 8 in-situ observation sites. The ability of the LSMs to detect dry and wet events is also evaluated.
New hydrological insights for the region: The surface and root zone soil moisture of the LSMs and the surface soil moisture of the ESA CCI (European Space Agency Climate Change Initiative, hereafter ESA-SM) show in general a good performance against the in-situ measurements. In particular, the BHOA (Balance Hidrológico Operativo para el Agro) shows the best representation of the soil moisture dynamic range and variability, and the GLDAS (Global Land Data Assimilation System)-Noah, ERA-Interim TESSEL (Tiled ECMWF’s Scheme for Surface Exchanges over Land) and Global Drought Observatory (GDO)-LISFLOOD are able to adequately represent the soil moisture anomalies over the Pampas region. In addition to the LSM results, also the ESASM satellite estimated anomalies proved to be valuable. However, the LSMs and the ESA-SM have difficulties in reproducing the soil moisture frequency distributions. Based on this study, it is clear that accurate forcing data and soil parameters are critical to substantially improve the ability of LSMs to detect dry and wet events.Fil: Spennemann, P.C.
An estimation of the land-atmosphere coupling strength in South America using the Global Land Data Assimilation System
The aim of this study is to identify regions of strong land surface –atmosphere coupling for the austral summer over South America. To accomplish this, a statistical methodology is applied to estimate the interactions of soil moisture with evapotranspiration and precipitation derived from the Global Land Data Assimilation System (GLDAS) dataset. Possible impacts of El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) on the coupling strength are also examined. Particular emphasis is set over two sub-regions of interest: Southeastern South America (SESA) and the continental part of the South Atlantic Convergence Zone (SACZ). Positive and significant soil moisture–precipitation feedbacks are found over parts of SACZ and in the southern part of South America. Instead, significant negative feedback is found over SESA. The influence of ENSO over the soil moisture–precipitation coupling strength signal is evident over tropical regions. Plausible physical mechanisms involved in the land surface–atmosphere interactions, the influence of ENSO and that of precipitation persistence over extratropical regions on the results, are discussed. The implications of this analysis on monthly to seasonal forecast are also examined. Despite that this methodology cannot be used to establish a precise causal–effect relationship, this study gives a valuable first order approximation of land surface–atmosphere interactions over South America that complements pre-existing work.Fil: Spennemann, Pablo Cristian. Evaluation of a combined drought indicator against crop yield estimations and simulations over the Argentine Humid Pampas
Droughts pose serious threats to the agricultural sector, especially in rainfed-dominated agricultural regions like those in Argentina’s Humid Pampas. This region was recently impacted by slow-evolving and long-lasting droughts as well as by flash droughts, resulting in losses reaching thousands of millions of US dollars. Improvements of drought early warning systems are essential, particularly given the projected increase in drought frequency and severity over southernSouth America. The spatial and temporal relationship between precipitation deficits, soil moisture and vegetation health anomalies are crucial for better understanding and representation of the agricultural droughts and their impacts. In this context, the Combined Drought Indicator (CDI) considers the causal and time-lagged relationship of these three variables. The study’s objective is twofold: (1) Analyze the time-lagged response between precipitation deficits, soil moisture and satellite fAPAR anomalies; and (2) Evaluate the CDI’s capability to characterize the severity of drought events on the Humid Pampas against agricultural yield estimations and simulations, as well as agricultural emergency declarations. The correlation among the variables shows strong spatial variability. The highest Pearson correlation values (r > 0.42) are observed over parts of the Humid Pampas for time lags of 0, 10, and 20 days between the variables. Although the CDI has limitations, such as its coarse spatial resolution and monthly temporal resolution of precipitation data, it effectivelytracks the progression of major drought events in the region. The CDI’s performance aligns well with estimations and simulations of soybean and corn yields, as well as official declarations of agricultural emergencies. Insights from this study also provide a basis for discussing potential improvements to the CDI. This study highlights the global and regional significance of evaluating and enhancing the CDI for effective drought monitoring, emphasizing the role of collaborativeefforts for future advancements in drought early warning systems.Fil: Spennemann, Pablo Cristian. Neoliberalismo: críticas y resistencias. Entrevista a Juan Pablo Rodríguez
----
In this interview with Juan Pablo Rodríguez, author of Resisting neoliberal capitalism in Chile: the possibility of social critique (2020), we address the main ideas and motivations behind the book and the research on which the book is based. We first explore the analysis the author makes of different theoretical critiques of contemporary neoliberal capitalism, and then we talk about the practices of embodied critiques carried out by social movements in Chile, focusing on the cases of the student and the pobladores movements
Pablo Parellada, fustigador del Modernismo
abstract: ABSTRACT This research aims to investigate the work and impact of the prolific and popular Pablo Parellada y Molas. Although the author is now forgotten, he is an important figure regarding the struggles between Modernist writers and their critics. Pablo Parellada was one the key detractors of literary Modernism, a movement which he attacked through his parodies as evinced in his poetry, drama and short stories. His works contain the main pejorative features that would become the standard critique of these young poets of Spain in the early 1900's. Through the work of Pablo Parellada, this study seeks to understand the literary debates of Modernism in Spain that took place in the early twentieth century. Through this understanding, this study becomes important for it reveals the many personal characteristics that were attributed to the young Modernist poets. Some of these characteristics continued to be used by literary critics and as well became part of the collective imagination at the time and were still circulating several decades later.Dissertation/ThesisM.A. Spanish 201

“Innominate, unnamed, autonomous entities wondering around. From the deepest silence I find lost, starving gazes; biting looks, others that are absent. Anonymity... Some looks scream for others, even for mine... The characters that appear in this gallery of faces have caught me in some way; some are friends, or were. I have never met some of the others. However, they are all a part of me. This collection of intervened portraits is a humble homage to all anonymous beings in their purest essence. In this way, Pablo Bielli (Montevideo, 1969) introduces this series of photographs for dixit.
