Pierre Emil George Salinger (June 14, 1925 – October 16, 2004) was an American journalist, author and politician. He had served as the seventh White House Press Secretary for United States Presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson. Salinger served as a United States Senator in 1964 and as campaign manager for the 1968 Robert F. Kennedy presidential campaign. Born in San Francisco in 1925, Salinger began his journalism career at the San Francisco Chronicle, where he worked as a copy boy, reporter and editor until 1955. After that, he worked at Collier\u27s Magazine and then for the U.S. Senate Labor Rackets Committee. Salinger then entered the business world, working as vice president for National General Corp. and Continental Airlines before returning to journalism as editor of the French weekly L\u27Express. In 1978, he began working as a correspondent for ABC News, a job he had until 1993

    The aesthetics of Pierre Boulez

To enable the reader to find references as quickly and easily as possible, I have grouped all references together in the bibliography in alphabetical order. Texts by the same author are distinguished first by year and second, if there are several texts from the same year, by letter. Interviews and writing collaborations (including published correspondence) involving Boulez are also ordered alphabetically. The year given at the beginning of each bibliographical entry is, in the majority of cases, the year in which the text was first published (not necessarily the year of the edition cited). For all writings written by Boulez, I have provided the original title under which the text in question was first published (usually in French). Many articles have subsequently been translated into English and therefore I have decided to provide page references for both versions. For all texts by writers other than Boulez, I have cited the version of the text I have used. Wherever possible, I have cited the existing English translations of texts originally written in French. However, on many occasions I have considered it necessary to make alterations to the published translations. This is particularly applicable to Boulez on Music Today (1971) and Orientations (1986), both of which display an often heavy-handed and rather inaccurate approach to the task of translating specific concepts employed by Boulez. In contrast. Stocktakings of an Apprenticeship (1991) has required only occasional minor amendments. All changes to the published English translations are acknowledged in the corresponding footnote. None of the material m this thesis has previously been submitted for a degree in this or any other University. The copyright of this thesis rests with the author. No quotation from it should be published without prior written consent and information from it should be acknowledged. I have received permission to exceed the word limit from the Graduate School Committee at the University of Durham

Benefits and costs of international financial integration : theory and facts

    No full text
The author provides a selective review of the recent analytical and empirical literature on the benefits and costs of international financial integration. He discusses the impact of financial openness on consumption, investment, and growth, and the impact of foreign bank entry on the domestic financial system. Consistent with some recent studies, the author argues that financial integration must be carefully prepared and managed to ensure that the benefits outweigh the short-run risks. Prudent macroeconomic management, adequate supervision and prudential regulation of the financial system, greater transparency, and improved capacity to manage risk in the private sector are important requirements for coping with potentially abrupt reversals in pro-cyclical, short-term capital flows. The author adopts a more skeptical view than some assessments in two areas, however. First, only foreign direct investment appears to provide dynamic gains and improved prospects for growth; the evidence on the benefits of other types of capital flows remains weak. Second, empirical research on the net benefits associated with foreign bank penetration is far from conclusive; in particular, the possibility that such penetration may lead to adverse changes in the allocation of credit among domestic firms cannot be dismissed on the basis of the existing evidence.Banks&Banking Reform,Capital Markets and Capital Flows,Fiscal&Monetary Policy,Economic Theory&Research,International Terrorism&Counterterrorism,Economic Theory&Research,Banks&Banking Reform,Macroeconomic Management,Environmental Economics&Policies,Financial Intermediation

Heme iron from meat and risk of colorectal cancer: a meta-analysis and a review of the mechanisms involved

    No full text
Red meat and processed meat intake is associated with a risk of colorectal cancer, a major cause of death in affluent countries. Epidemiological and experimental evidence supports the hypothesis that heme iron present in meat promotes colorectal cancer. This meta-analysis of prospective cohort studies of colon cancer reporting heme intake included 566,607 individuals and 4,734 cases of colon cancer. The summary relative risk of colon cancer was 1.18 [95%C.I.: 1.06-1.32] for subjects in the highest category of heme iron intake compared with those in the lowest category. Epidemiological data thus show a suggestive association between dietary heme and risk of colon cancer. The analysis of experimental studies in rats with chemically-induced colon cancer showed that dietary hemoglobin and red meat consistently promote aberrant crypt foci, a putative pre-cancer lesion. The mechanism is not known, but heme iron has a catalytic effect on (i) the endogenous formation of carcinogenic N-nitroso compounds and (ii) the formation of cytotoxic and genotoxic aldehydes by lipoperoxidation. A review of evidence supporting these hypotheses suggests that both pathways are involved in heme iron toxicit

F. Halaman : xii, 174+ 43 +19 lampiran D. Kata Kunci : Perlindungan Hukum Merek Terkenal E. Isi Abstrak : In the industrial world, brand development is very rapid. One of the things that often happens is to copy famous brands that have been registered and are known to the world community, as is the case raised by the author regarding infringement of well-known brands on the overall equality experienced by Pierre Cardin of France, which is registered in class 3 goods which sued Pierre Cardin Indonesia, who used the Pierre Cardin trademark registered in class 3 which in the end the case was won by the Defendant. The problem that the author examines in this regard is the protection of the famous French brand owner Pierre Cardin and the judge's decision regarding the famous brand Pierre Cardin is in accordance with the Trademark Law. The author conducts research using normative research methods that will use the law, the decision of the judge and interviews with relevant parties to conduct a review of the problem. Protection of trademarks is specifically regulated in Articles 4, 5 and 6 of the Old Trademark Law and 20 and 21 of the New Trademark Law. This article facilitates that trademark applications must be rejected if they have similarities in principle or in whole with other parties' well-known marks for similar goods and / or services, and trademark applications are rejected if they resemble the names of famous people, and in this case the French Pierre Cardin Case with Pierre Cardin Indonesia included in this sphere. Regarding the decision, the judge did not obey the norms governing the mark and the judge violated the trademark rules. Thus, the author concludes, the protection of well-known marks has been regulated by the Act and the judge's decision can be said to be not in accordance with the norms that exist in Indonesia. F. Blaufuss, F. Halzen, C. Kopper (Changed to add one missing author, no other changes from initial version.)The recent observation by the IceCube neutrino observatory of an astrophysical flux of neutrinos represents the "first light" in the nascent field of neutrino astronomy. The observed diffuse neutrino flux seems to suggest a much larger level of hadronic activity in the non-thermal universe than previously thought and suggests a rich discovery potential for a larger neutrino observatory. This document presents a vision for an substantial expansion of the current IceCube detector, IceCube-Gen2, including the aim of instrumenting a 10km310\,\mathrm{km}^3 volume of clear glacial ice at the South Pole to deliver substantial increases in the astrophysical neutrino sample for all flavors. A detector of this size would have a rich physics program with the goal to resolve the sources of these astrophysical neutrinos, discover GZK neutrinos, and be a leading observatory in future multi-messenger astronomy programs
