Polymer multimode waveguide optical and electronic PCB manufacturing
The paper describes the research in the £1.3 million IeMRC Integrated Optical and Electronic Interconnect PCB Manufacturing (OPCB) Flagship Project in which 8 companies and 3 universities carry out collaborative research and which was formed and is technically led by the author. The consortium’s research is aimed at investigating a range of fabrication techniques, some established and some novel, for fabricating polymer multimode waveguides from several polymers, some formulations of which are being developed within the project. The challenge is to develop low cost waveguide manufacturing techniques compatible with commercial PCB manufacturing and to reduce their alignment cost. The project aims to take the first steps in making this hybrid optical waveguide and electrical copper track printed circuit board disruptive technology widely available by establishing and incorporating waveguide design rules into commercial PCB layout software and transferring the technology for fabricating such boards to a commercial PCB manufacturer. To focus the research the project is designing an optical waveguide backplane to tight realistic constraints, using commercial layout software with the new optical design rules, for a demonstrator into which 4 daughter cards are plugged, each carrying an aggregate of 80 Gb/s data so that each waveguide carries 10 Gb/s
Paleolithic archaeology at the Swan Valley Community School, Swanscombe, Kent
This paper reports on the recovery of Palaeolithic flint artefacts and faunal remains from fluvial gravels at the base of a sequence of Pleistocene sediments revealed during construction works at two sites to the south of Swanscombe village. Although outside the mapped extent of the Boyn Hill/Orsett Formation, the newly discovered deposits can be firmly correlated with the Middle Gravels and Upper Loam from the Barnfield Pit sequence dating to c. 400,000-380,000 BP. This increases greatly the known extent of these deposits, one horizon of which produced the Swanscombe Skull, and has provided more information on their upper part.Comparison of the lithic assemblages from volume-controlled sieving with those from general monitoring demonstrated that artefact collections formed without controlled methods of recovery, such as form the majority of the Lower and Middle Palaeolithic archaeological record, are likely to be disproportionately dominated by larger, more visible and more collectable neatly made handaxes to the detriment of more poorly made, asymmetrical handaxes and cores, flakes and percussors. The lithic assemblage from the fluvial gravel was confirmed as dominated by pointed handaxes, supporting previous studies of artefacts from the equivalent Lower Middle Gravel at Barnfield Pit. The raw material characteristics of the assemblage were investigated, and it was concluded that there was no indication that the preference for pointed shapes could be related to either the shape or source of raw material. This paper also reviews the significance of lithic assemblages from disturbed fluvial contexts, and concludes that, contrary to some current perspectives, they have a valuable role to play complementing less disturbed evidence in developing understanding of the Palaeolithic

Takashius nom. nov. (Neogastropoda: Buccinoidea: Fasciolariidae), a replacement name for Okutanius Kantor et al., 2018 non D.R. Smith, 1981
International audienceThe new replacement name Takashius nom. nov. is proposed to solve the homonymy between the fasciolariid genus Okutanius Kantor et al., 2018 and the hymenopteran genus Okutanius D.R. Smith, 1981

Notes on two unusual species of Symphyta (Hymenoptera: Pergidae, Xiphydriidae) from Chile, with the first report of a gall-inducing sawfly from the Neotropical Region
We report the southernmost record (Huinay Scientific Field Station: 42°22 ́ S, 72°24 ́ W, Comau, chilean Patagonia ) for the sawfly Philoperra obscura Smith (Pergidae) and add new morphological and biological data on this poorly known species. The individuals of P. obscura known so far appear to morphologically differ in the number of antennomeres, forewing anal cell shape, and color of the first abdominal tergum and of the hind tibia. The individual at Huinay was collected from inside a gall on Nothofagus betuloides Mirb. (Oerst.) (Nothofagaceae), thus resulting in the first report of a gall-forming sawfly from the Neotropical Region. An individual of a second sawfly species, Derecyrta beechei Smith (Xiphydriidae), was also collected at Huinay and presented some differences with the previously known individuals in forewing venation and color of the mandibles.
