Apolipoprotein D Concentration in Human Plasma during Aging and in Parkinson’s Disease: A Cross-Sectional Study
Apolipoprotein D (ApoD), a lipocalin transporter of small hydrophobic molecules, plays an important role in several neurodegenerative diseases. ApoD is expressed in and secreted from a variety of peripheral and brain tissues. Increments of ApoD have been reported in relation with oxidative stress conditions, aging, and degeneration in the nervous system. Preliminary findings support the role of ApoD in neuroprotection. However, its role in PD remains unclear. To date, no studies have been performed on the relationship between ApoD in the blood and PD, as neurodegenerative pathology related to oxidative damage. We investigated the concentration of ApoD in the blood of healthy control subjects and PD patients with mild-to-moderate neurological impairment. ApoD plasma levels were measured using sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA) in 90 healthy subjects (aging-analysis cohort) and in 66 PD patients at different stages compared with 19 age-matched healthy subjects. Significant age-related increase of ApoD was detected in subjects older than 65 years of age (p<0.002). In PD patients, a significant increase in ApoD plasma concentration was found compared with healthy subjects of the same age (p<0.05). ApoD and PD stage are significantly correlated (p<0.05). ApoD might be a valid marker for the progression of PD
Visuomotor imagery and rehabilitation of neglect
Objective: To assess the effectiveness of visuomotor imagery training in the rehabilitation of unilateral neglect. Design: Before-after trial. Behavioral analysis of single cases. Setting: Neurologic rehabilitation unit of a university hospital. Patients: Two patients with acquired brain injury who were suffering from severe and long-lasting unilateral neglect consequent to large lesions of cortical and subcortical right-brain. Intervention: A behavioral training program consisting of visual and movement imagery exercises. Forty experimental sessions, each lasting 50 minutes, were delivered. Main Outcome Measures: Six neuropsychological tests evaluating unilateral neglect; seven 'functional' tests assessing neglect behavior under daily life conditions; a questionnaire (filled out by the patients' relatives) concerning the patients' disability in the family context attributable to neglect. All the outcome measures were recorded at three different times: before, soon after, and 6 months after the end of the experimental training. Results: The visuomotor 'imagery training' ameliorated the deficit in performance related to neglect in both patients. All the outcome measures (neuropsychological and functional tests and the questionnaire) were positively influenced by the treatment. Moreover, the improvement was stable over a 6-month period, suggesting that the treatment had a long-term effect. Conclusions: The results show the possible effectiveness of a training method based on visuomotor imagery in diminishing impairment and functional disability associated with contralateral neglect
MeSH term explosion and author rank improve expert recommendations
Information overload is an often-cited phenomenon that reduces the productivity, efficiency and efficacy of scientists. One challenge for scientists is to find appropriate collaborators in their research. The literature describes various solutions to the problem of expertise location, but most current approaches do not appear to be very suitable for expert recommendations in biomedical research. In this study, we present the development and initial evaluation of a vector space model-based algorithm to calculate researcher similarity using four inputs: 1) MeSH terms of publications; 2) MeSH terms and author rank; 3) exploded MeSH terms; and 4) exploded MeSH terms and author rank. We developed and evaluated the algorithm using a data set of 17,525 authors and their 22,542 papers. On average, our algorithms correctly predicted 2.5 of the top 5/10 coauthors of individual scientists. Exploded MeSH and author rank outperformed all other algorithms in accuracy, followed closely by MeSH and author rank. Our results show that the accuracy of MeSH term-based matching can be enhanced with other metadata such as author rank
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Can the Combination of Rehabilitation and Vitamin D Supplementation Improve Fibromyalgia Symptoms at All Ages?
Several studies have indicated a correlation between vitamin D deficiency and widespread
chronic pain syndromes, such as fibromyalgia. During this study, the effect of supplementation with
vitamin D in association with physical exercise in patients with fibromyalgia was evaluated, in terms
of improvement of pain, functional capacity and quality of life, also evaluating the presence of any differences in age. A single-center, observational, comparative study was conducted in 80 fibromyalgia
patients. They are randomized into 2 groups: Group A, consisting of patients ≤50 years; and group B,
consisting of patients >50 years. Both received weekly supplementation with 50,000 IU cholecalciferol for 3 months in association with a rehabilitation protocol. Patients were assessed at enrollment
(T0), 3 months (T1), and 6 months (T2) from the initial assessment with blood vitamin D dosage
and administration of rating scales (NRS, FIQ, and SF-12). From the comparison between the two
groups, we have seen that in young people, supplementation with high-dose vitamin D improves
short-term musculoskeletal pain and long-term functional capacity. Conversely, musculoskeletal pain
and long-term quality of life improve in the elderly. Supplementing with high doses of vitamin D
in fibromyalgia patients improves the quality of life and pain in the elderly and also the functional
capacity in the young
Enhanced Nanocellulose Production from Cotton and Textile Waste Using Binary and Ternary Natural Deep Eutectic Solvents
The growing accumulation of textile waste poses significant environmental challenges, as only a small percentage of materials is currently recycled. However, cotton waste offers a valuable feedstock for the regeneration of cellulose and nanocellulose (NC). This study presents a sustainable and efficient method for producing NC from textile waste using both binary and ternary natural deep eutectic solvents (NADESs). By treating cotton wool, pre-consumer standard cotton fabrics, and post-consumer denim textiles, with NADESs, NC generation is achieved in high yields (up to ≈90%) in all cases. The most promising NADESs, composed of choline chloride and gallic acid (and tartaric acid), effectively dissolve cotton-based materials when subjected to heating and sonication, producing cellulose nanocrystals with length ranging from 100 to 300 nm and crystallinity level up to ≈80%. The NADESs are characterized by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), as well as modeled by density functional theory (DFT), to investigate their hydrogen bond network. Eventually, their recyclability is also investigated. This approach opens promising applications in the fields of sustainable nanomaterial production and textile recycling, providing a greener alternative for waste valorization and promoting circular economy practices. © 2024 The Author(s).
