Eudemonism to Hedonism: A Historical Exploration of Global Behavioral Shifts

    No full text
Objective: This paper delves into the underlying causes of the global shift in behavioral preferences from eudemonism to hedonism. Research Gap:  Drawing on literature from various eras up to 15th century, followed by examining the transitions in behavioral paradigms from 16th to 19th century and beyond, this study aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of this significant evolution in human thought and action. Design/Methodology/Approach: The research applies bibliometric analysis, systematic review and sociological analysis and seeks to uncover the driving factors behind the changing attitudes toward defining happiness and pursuing pleasure. The Main Findings: Results confirmed a paradigm shift from eudemonic to hedonic values right after 15th century. Hedonism has ever since intensified globally. Theoretical / Practical Implications of the Findings: Recently, literature shows a shift towards research and inquiry into eudemonism as a better route to human well-being. This realization demands further research to assist revitalizing of values which humanity was originally built upon. Current research sets a path for others to follow and highlights the direction of movement in realization and behavioral shift. Originality/Value: By synthesizing diverse perspectives across history, the research offers insights into the broader societal, philosophical, and cultural shifts that have shaped contemporary behavioral norms

Melting heat transmission of Maxwell nanofluid flow caused due to a stretchable cylindrical pipe through Finite Element Technique

    No full text
The objective of current investigation is to examine Maxwell fluid flow generated by cylindrical stretching pipe. Thermophoresis and Brownian moment phenomena will also incorporate on the said fluid. Melting heat shifting phenomenon incorporated at the surface of the elongating cylinder. Mathematical formulation is supported by boundary layer assumption. Suitable similarity transformations diminishes model of nonlinear partial differential equations  into a model of nonlinear ordinary differential equations  that ultimately solved via numerical technique named Finite Element Technique. The properties of numerous effective variables are graphically displayed and examined. Further the physical quantities like velocity gradient, heat and mass fluxes are tabulated numerically and analyzed. The dimensionless temperature distribution rises for rising values of curvature parameter and Brownian motion parameter however an opposite behavior is observed for melting parameter and Prandtl number. Moreover, a reduction occurs in heat and mass fluxes for sufficiently high values of curvature parameter. The author (Taseer Muhammad) thanks the KKU research unit for the financial and administrative support under grantnumber 521 for year 44King Khalid University, Grant/AwardNumber: 52

Book review: Reading new India: post-millennial Indian fiction in English

"Reading New India: Post-Millennial Indian Fiction in English." E. Dawson Varughese. Bloomsbury. February 2013. --- The book describes how Indian fiction has moved beyond notions of ‘postcolonial’ writing to reflect an increasingly confident and diverse cultures by exploring the work of such writers as Aravind Adiga (author of the Man-Booker Prize winning White Tiger), Usha K.R. and Taseer. Emily Coolidge Toker finds the the splendor and the misery of Reading New India is that it whets the appetite for the fiction it introduces but necessarily fails to satiate the appetite thus awakened

Reading New India is an insightful exploration of contemporary Indian writing in English. Exploring the work of such writers as Aravind Adiga (author of the Man-Booker Prize winning White Tiger), Usha K.R. and Taseer, the book looks at how the 'new' India has been recreated and defined in an English Language literature that is now reaching a global audience. The book describes how Indian fiction has moved beyond notions of 'postcolonial' writing to reflect an increasingly confident and diverse cultures. Reading New India covers such topics as: •Representations of the city - from Mumbai to Calcutta •Young India - from Chick Lit to Blog Novels •Genre fiction - crime novels, science fiction and fantasy •Bollywood adaptations and Graphic Novels. Including a chronological time-line of major social, cultural and political reforms, biographies of the major authors covered, further reading and a glossary of Hindi terms, this book is an essential guide for students of contemporary world literature and postcolonial writing

A Dialogic Discourse Analysis of Saadat Hasan Manto's Short Story “For Freedom” Translated by Aatish Taseer

    No full text
Saadat Hasan Manto is a well-known author of the short story “For Freedom.” This study aims to explore the multifaceted representation of women in Manto’s short story by employing Dialogic Discourse Analysis (DDA) as a methodological approach. Through the use of stylization and parody as prominent examples of Unidirectional and Vari-directional double-voiced discourse, the researcher is able to uncover the intricate layers of meaning within the story and gain a deeper understanding of the ways in which gender, power, and ideology intersect in the pursuit of personal and collective freedom. Through analyzing the data, using feminist CDA, it is found that the narrative of the story is critically analyzed, revealing the underlying power dynamics and ideological representations of gender. Moreover, the narrative unveils the ideological objectification and identification of women, shedding light on the complexities of gender ideologies and power dynamics prevalent in society

OPTIMIZATION OF DARCY-FORCHHEIMER SQUEEZING FLOW IN NONLINEAR STRATIFIED FLUID UNDER CONVECTIVE CONDITIONS WITH ARTIFICIAL NEURAL NETWORK

    No full text
In cases when high velocity occurs, non-Darcy phenomena are essential for explaining fluid motion in porous media and have wide range of applications. The present study displays the magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) squeezing flow of fluid through a non-Darcian medium towards a stretched permeable surface. The heat and mass procedures are investigated using convective conditions and nonlinear stratification. The radiation and viscous dissipation phenomena are implemented to enhance the heat transfer. The nonlinear simplified equations are evaluated using a numerical Runge-Kutta fourth-order approach via the shooting process. To see the variation in the relevant fields, graphs of essential parameters have been provided. The Sherwood number, Nusselt number, and the skin friction coefficient were calculated numerically for various parameters and three different artificial neural networks (ANNs) were developed with the obtained data. The obtained results have shown that artificial neural networks can make predictions and optimizations with high accuracy.Talented Young Scientist Program of Ministry of Science and Technology of China (Pakistan)The first author is supported by the Talented Young Scientist Program of Ministry of Science and Technology of China (Pakistan-19-007)

Post-liberalisation Efficiency and Productivity of the Banking Sector in Pakistan

    No full text
It has been long debated in economic literature whether financial markets play a significant role in economic growth and development. [For review see Gertler (1988) and Levine (1997)]. Findings of some recent empirical literature show that well-functioning financial system plays an instrumental role in economic growth, and the causality runs from finance to growth [for cross country evidences see King and Levine (1993, 1993a); Levine and Zervos (1998); Levine, Loayza and Beck (1999); Beck, Levine, and Loayza (1999)]. This, in turn, has led to a search for the key factors that determine the better functioning financial markets. Within the banking sector, efficiency is the core concern of both academics and bank officials. A number of studies have sought to measure the efficiency of financial institutions, to identify the factors that contribute to efficiency of financial system, and to recommend the ways to attain the peer group efficiency levels [Berg (1993); Leaven (1999); Berger and Mester (1997); Miller and Noulas (1996)]. These empirical findings suggest a healthy competitive financial market pave the way for efficient market participants that leads to overall efficiency of the system and hence productivity. Following this notion, liberalisation of financial markets has been initiated to improve the performance of financial institutions both in developed and developing countries. Some empirical tests have been carried out to measure the effects of liberalisation and deregulation of financial institutions on the efficiency and productivity of banking sector.
