The life and works of Osbert of Clare

    No full text
Osbert of Clare was an English monastic writer, whose works extended from the mid-1120s to the mid-1150s. His Latin hagiography reflects a deep admiration for Anglo-Saxon saints and spirituality, while his letters provide a personal perspective on his turbulent career. As prior of Westminster Abbey, Osbert of Clare worked to strengthen the rights and prestige of his monastery. His production of forged or altered charters makes him one of England's most prolific medieval forgers. At times his passion for reform put him at odds with his abbots, and he was sent into exile under both Abbot Herbert (1121-c.1136) and Abbot Gervase (1138-c.1157). Also Osbert, as one of the first proponents of the Immaculate Conception of Mary, wrote about the feast, worked to legitimize its celebration, and provided us with the only significant narration of its introduction to England. This thesis is divided into two sections. The first section is principally historical and the second is principally literary. In the first section, I provide an overview of Osbert of Clare's career and examine in greater detail two of his most significant undertaking: his promotion of Westminster Abbey and his attempted canonization of Edward the Confessor. In the second section, I give a philological study of Osbert Latin style and examine themes that nm throughout his writings, such as virginity, exile and kingship. Osbert's promotion of the feast of the Immaculate Conception is included in the second section of the thesis because of its ties to the themes of virginity and femininity within his writings. There are also two appendices: the first is a survey of the extant manuscripts of Osbert's writings, and the second is an edition of Osbert's unpublished Life of St Ethelbert from Gotha, Forschungsbibliothek MS Memb. i. 8l

The aim of research is to develop and apply teaching materials for the Ulos Weaving course in two languages. This is considered important and urgent to address curriculum implementation as per the requirements for ASIIN, ABET and AUN QA accreditation or certification. The problem studied is the validity, effectiveness and practicality of the product being developed. This applied research uses the ADDIE development model developed by Dick and Carry with five stages: analysis, design, development, implementation and evaluation. The objects of product testing were students from the fifth semester fine arts education study program in 1 class (21 people) from 4 classes and 6 lecturers. This research creates innovation and development of teaching materials that are oriented towards textbook products which have an impact on improving the quality of graduates. After the product was validated by 4 experts, material validity was found to be 88% in the very effective category, validation of the layout or appearance of the book was 90%, and validation in Indonesian was 89% and English was 85% in the good category. The results of the student questionnaire were 86.57% and 100% of the lecturers said it was very useful. With the implementation of this textbook, it is hoped that the Ulos Weaving course will become an idol because it is a typical course of the Unimed Fine Arts Department. With this textbook, it will attract the interest of students from other universities and foreign students to study in the FBS Unimed Fine Arts Education Study Program with the Independent Campus Learning Curriculum which is oriented towards results

Advocate is one of the law enforcers who has a role to uphold the law, which is was wrote in this thesis, the author discusses the role of advocates to protect the rights of his clients who commit narcotics abuse. The one of Client's rights that deserve to be fight for in this case is about rehabilitation rights, where all perpetrators doesn’t know about it. Hence the role of an advocate is needed to fight for rehabilitation rights for narcotics abusers. The author uses normative research methods which is conducting an assessment of the law plus conducting interviews with informants as a complementary. From the study, the authors concluded that there is a role of advocates as attorneys from their clients who have the role as applicants who apply for rehabilitation and coordinate with law enforcers on case inspections, so that rehabilitation of narcotics abusers can run as guaranteed by Act. No. 35 of 2009. When advocates seeking rehabilitation rights have problems due to differences concepts between advocates and law enforcers who examine cases regarding the right to rehabilitate narcotics abusers, which causes coordination doesn’t run smoothly or become obstructed. In addition, facilities for rehabilitation that are still insufficient for narcotics abusers are also an obstacle for advocates. Keywords : advocates, rehabilitate, narcotics, narcotics abusers, client

    Babel Self-Inflicted

This essay, composed for a first-year writing seminar on literature in WWI, explores Osbert Sitwell's poem "Therefore is the Name of it Called Babel." The author assesses 20th century mentalities in the poet’s terms of biblical era Babel, emphasizing that the shocking peak of humanity is found in the horrors of the Great War. The tragedy is that following a positivist upward trajectory, WWI reveals that progression is broken and Europeans in particular are confounded by the new era of destruction reminiscent of Genesis’ Babel. The tobacco industry is one of the sectors that greatly helps state revenues through excise taxes collected by the government so that it can help the Government/Local Government to implement the work made through the APBN/APBD. Due to the large contribution of significant tobacco companies to the national economy, researchers are very interested in exploring and researching this sector, especially in cigarette companies that are listed on the JCI. The study aims to determine and explain the impact of interest rates, earning per share, and book value per share on the share price of tobacco companies in the JCI. The analysis method used is descriptive quantitative analysis with a regression model using random effects from secondary data in the form of public data on tobacco company stock prices listed on the JCI from 2015 to 2019 sourced from the IDX and Bank Indonesia. The author uses a tool in the form of E-Views 10 in conducting the analysis. The results showed that the interest rate has a significant negative influence on the share price of tobacco companies in the JCI, while for earnings per Share has a significant positive influence on the share price of tobacco companies in the JCI, while the Book Value per Share has a negative influence and no significant effect on the share price of tobacco companies in the JCI. while simultaneously all independent variables affect the share price of tobacco companies in the JCI in 2015-201

Political trajectories in the painting of P. Wyndham Lewis

    No full text
This thesis presents an analysis of the political dimension to the paintings of Percy Wyndham Lewis (1882-1957).Through an exegesis of the discreet and latent "voices" in Lewis's paintings the ideological parameters of his thought world are disclosed. These imperatives are examined for their display of political predispositions, for values and attitudes, which reveal a loading towards specific socio-cultural standards. In so far as these standards can be identified with historically relevant political programmes they become manifestos for political actions. Or, at the very least, they can be seen to exist as critical and prescriptive social insights. Importantly, the focus of this examination and interpretation remains the visual image and its related texts. A key aspect of both the methodology and argument within this thesis, insists that the visual image is the bearer of meaning in both its subject matter and technique. Values are communicated not only in reference to the thing displayed, but, in the manner of the display. Hence, an analysis of the intellectual and formal strategies employed by Lewis in his painting becomes a central concern of the thesis. Finally, the thesis rounds on the actual nature of Lewis's politics as revealed in his approach to art. While it is accepted that the mediation from the political to the painted throws up many and substantial barriers, the thesis insists that a political reading of Lewis's creative work is not only appropriate but necessary. In offering just such a reading the author hopes to transcend the boundaries between the disciplines of Art History and Sociology

A Systematic Review of the Pharmacokinetics and Pharmacodynamics of Novel Beta-Lactams and Beta-Lactam with Beta-Lactamase Inhibitor Combinations for the Treatment of Pneumonia Caused by Carbapenem-Resistant Gram-Negative Bacteria

    No full text
Background: Novel beta-lactams show activity against many multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacteria that cause severe lung infections. Understanding pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic characteristics of these agents may help optimise outcomes in the treatment of pneumonia. Objectives: To describe and appraise studies that report pulmonary pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic data of cefiderocol, ceftazidime/avibactam, ceftolozane/tazobactam, imipenem/cilastatin/relebactam and meropenem/vaborbactam. Methods: MEDLINE (PubMed), Embase, Web of Science and Scopus libraries were used for the literature search. Pulmonary population pharmacokinetic and pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic studies on adult patients receiving cefiderocol, ceftazidime/avibactam, ceftolozane/tazobactam, imipenem/cilastatin/relebactam, and meropenem/vaborbactam published in peer-reviewed journals were included. Two independent authors screened, reviewed and extracted data from included articles. A reporting guideline for clinical pharmacokinetic studies (ClinPK statement) was used for bias assessment. Relevant outcomes were included, such as population pharmacokinetic parameters and probability of target attainment of dosing regimens. Results: Twenty-four articles were included. There was heterogeneity in study methods and reporting of results, with diversity across studies in adhering to the ClinPK statement checklist. Ceftolozane/tazobactam was the most studied agent. Only two studies collected epithelial lining fluid samples from patients with pneumonia. All the other phase I studies enrolled healthy subjects. Significant population heterogeneity was evident among available population pharmacokinetic models. Probabilities of target attainment rates above 90% using current licensed dosing regiments were reported in most studies. Conclusions: Although lung pharmacokinetics was rarely described, this review observed high target attainment using plasma pharmacokinetic data for all novel beta-lactams. Future studies should describe lung pharmacokinetics in patient populations at risk of carbapenem-resistant pathogen infections. (c) 2024 The Author(s). Published by Elsevier Ltd. Anselm of Canterbury and the Development of Theological Thought, c. 1070-1141

    No full text
This thesis explores the role of Anselm of Canterbury (1033-1109) in the development of theological thought in the late eleventh and early twelfth centuries. It aims to demonstrate that Anselm’s thought had a greater impact on the early development of scholastic theology than is often recognized, particularly in the areas of the doctrine of the incarnation and redemption, but also in his discussion of freedom and sin. Through his explanation of the economy of salvation in terms of making satisfaction for sin, and his rejection of modes of discussion that focussed on the rights and role of the devil, Anselm’s writing on the theology of the redemption provided a framework for the discussion of later authors such as Hugh of St Victor, Peter Abelard, Bernard of Clairvaux and authors associated with the School of Laon, among others. Such discussion often utilized Anselm as an explicator of difficult passages in patristic theology, notably Augustine, and his work was most controversial when he was thought to have contradicted earlier authority. Anselm was involved in contemporary polemics with both Jews and Christian theologians, as well as producing works that explored profound theological and metaphysical ideas. In his emphasis on the place and role of reason in divine questions, he crossed the boundaries between ‘monastic’ and ‘scholastic’ thought. Through an exploration of Anselmian elements in the thought of a variety of authors from the late eleventh and early twelfth centuries, this thesis aims to contribute to a broadening understanding of the legacy of this great thinker
