In the novels of the detective Bruna Husky, Rosa Montero uses a degraded urban landscape, inspired by the well-known film Blade Runner. The coexistence of current and futuristic elements allows the author to project the concerns of her present into a dystopian Madrid, starting from the use of elements of both hard-boiled and science fiction

Gift-giving, consumption and the female court in sixteenth-century Italy

PhDThe subject of my research is the female consort and her court. I focus on three Austrian Archduchesses: Giovanna, Barbara and Eleonora Habsburg who came down to Italy in the second half of the sixteenth century and married into the ducal houses of Florence, Ferrara and Mantua respectively. My thesis compares the structures, roles and relationships in these three contemporary female courts, and analyses the consorts’ reliance on personal consumption, gift-giving and patronage activities to assert their power, position and identity. My research is primarily based on the unpublished letters and accounts preserved in the three state archives of Florence, Modena (which contains the Este archive) and Mantua. My thesis starts with a background chapter on the history of the three Duchesses, and then turns to address each Duchess’s financial situation, the organisation of her court, her attitude to her husband and her new family and the particular circumstances of her life. This chapter sheds new light on the position of the consort, and sets the stage for the exploration of her patronage and consumption. My first case-study focuses on clothing. I examine the Duchesses’ choices in dressing themselves and their courts and analyse their treatment of clothing as a valuable visual language. My second case-study focuses on the gifts of food that were sent to and from the Duchesses. I discuss their function as items of relatively small economic value in the creation of patronage relationships and in the process of social and political mediation. The central tenet in my case-studies is that objects could act as coded messages, with multiple meanings which can be dissected by studying owner, receiver, means of transmission and the type of object itself. My approach employs material culture as a means for enriching current knowledge of a particularly under-researched subject: the female consort

The present study analyzes the book Notícia de um Sequestro (1996), which was written by the Colombian writer and journalist Gabriel Garcia Marquez. The relevance of this work for the study is in the fact that it uses Literature and Journalism in its narration. This literary genre makes a journalistic fact turns into a surrounding and humanized narrative making the by means of mixing journalism and fiction. The research focus on this book with the aim to investigate how the author used the journalistic and literary language and how both helped to develop this plot, in which he tells the kidnapping of ten journalists and relatives of influent politicians in Colombia by the Extraditable group, a group of drug traffickers who were led by Pablo Escobar, who feared the extradition to the United States. Garcia Marquez book contributed to demystify the story known as official by the government and the meadia of communication of that time. The applied methodology was the bibliographic research which was fulfilled by t to understand how he used Literary Journalism in other moments of his career. Besides other were used to treat about the aspects related to the narrative, Lopes (2010) who elucidates the distinctions between journalistic and literary genres, Barbosa (2007) who articulates about Journalism and Literature and finally some authors like Gilard (2006), Gardner (1995) and Silva (1990) who were important to explain how Garcia Marquez used these two trends in his previous works. The result of the analysis is the confirmation that the author was successful when he joined Journalism and Literature in a way that both, despite their specificities, can complement each other to build it and reaffirm this literary genre.O presente estudo analisa o livro Notícia de um Sequestro (1996), do ficcionista colombiano Gabriel García Márquez.

    No full text
Introduction: Non-surgical root canal retreatment presents higher technical complexity and poor prognosis compared to primary endodontic treatment. Within this context, a more detaild investigation on the factors affecting the feasibilty of achieving technical quality and periapical healing in teeth presenting secondary root canal infection is needed. Data mining approach is still little explored in the dentistry field, regardless of its potential to contribute to knowledge discovery. In the present study decision trees were complemented by conventional statistical analysis aiming to investigate patterns and risk factors related to technical quality and healing outcomes in non-surgical root canal retreatment. Methods: This observational study included 321 consecutive patients presenting for non-surgical root canal retreatment. Patients were treated by postgraduate students, following standard protocols. Data concerning demographic, medical, diagnostic, treatment and follow-up variables were transferred to an eletronic chart database (ECD). After data preprocessing and preparation a total of 32 independent variables and 2 dependent variables were defined. Basic statistics were tabled and provided the frequency of missing values, the distribution of categorical attributes and the mean and standard deviation values of numeric attributes. Decision trees were generated to predict patterns related to technical quality (satisfactory/unsatisfactory) and periapical healing (healed /failure), using J48 classification algorithm in Weka data mining software (Waikato Environment of Knowledge Analysis, University of Waikato, New Zealand). Statistical tests were performed using SPSS software (SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL, USA). Univariate and multivariate analytic methods were used to determine factors affecting endodontic retreatment technical quality and periapical healing. Results: After endodontic retreatment, technical outcome was satisfactory in 65.20%, and periapical healing was observed in 80.50% of the cases. Technical quality of endodontic retreatment was affected by several risk factors, including severity of root curvature (p < 0.001) and altered root canal morphology (p = 0.002). The decision trees suggested that patterns that combine straight root curvature and apical root resorption may prevent satisfactory technical outcomes. Periapical lesion area (p = 0.018), tooth type (p = 0.015) and apical resorption (p = 0.024) were shown to be significantly associated with endodontic retreatment failure. Data mining analysis suggested that large periapical lesions, as well as poor root filling quality in the initial endodontic treatment, present mechanisms that are not fully understood with regards to the interaction between intracanal infection and host response, which should be further investigated. Conclusions: Technical quality of endodontic retreatment is affected by several risk factors, including severity of root curvature and altered root canal morphology. The occurence of procedure accidents is especially relevant in the apical third of the roots, affecting the technical quality. Periapical lesion area, tooth type and apical resorption were shown to be significantly associated with endodontic retreatment failure

Bruna Maccari-Poisson : A rubbish pit from the Late Middle Ages in the Saint-Jean quarter of Lyon. The author examines pottery found in an ancient well, filled in towards the end of the Middle Ages and then converted into a rubbish pit, in which eight stratigraphie units have been identified. Using typological criteria, the author proposes to date some of the pottery to the fifteenth century, and the rest to the early sixteenth century. ENDODONTIC MANAGEMENT OF A FIRST LOWER PREMOLAR WITH 3 CANALS: A CASE REPORT

    No full text
This study aimed to report the endodontic management of a mandibular first premolar with three canals and independent foramina. In most cases, premolars present a single and broad root canal. However, mandibular first premolars may present variations in morphology and in number of root canals, which increases the endodontic treatment complexity. The tooth presented a trifurcation in the middle third and three distinct canals with independent foramina. Endodontic treatment was performed with the aid of an operating microscope. Cone beam computed tomography and operative microscope were essential to establish the correct diagnosis given the mandibular premolar anatomic variation. Thus, the association of these two tools facilitated a proper endodontic management, increasing the chances of success

Geological and structural map of the southeastern Pag Island, Croatia: field constraints on the Cretaceous - Eocene evolution of the Dinarides foreland

    No full text
The sedimentary succession exposed in the Northern Dalmatia Islands mainly consists of Cretaceous to Neogene shallow water carbonates, folded and imbricated within the External Dinarides thrust belt. During Cretaceous times, carbonate sediments were deposed on a heterogeneous, tectonically-influenced carbonate platform, which was then uplifted and eroded, as evidenced by a regional unconformity embracing the Late Cretaceous and Paleocene. Sedimentation resumed during the Eocene, when the area was part of the foreland basin of the Dinaric belt. With our geological and structural map of the southeastern Pag Island at the 1:25,000 scale, we refined the stratigraphic and structural setting and the tectono- sedimentary evolution of the area.Applied Geolog
