    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Genetics of equine insect bite hypersensitivity and genetic diversity in horses

    Genetic variation contributing to the phenotypic variation was utilized in this thesis to understand the genetic background of a complex trait IBH, and to understand genetic diversity and relationships between various horse populations. IBH is the most common skin allergic disorder in horses, caused by bites of midges, predominantly Culicoides species. It affects various horse breeds worldwide. With no effective treatment, IBH degrades horse health and causes economic loss. In this thesis, we used genome-wide SNPs to identify regions contributing to genetic variance of IBH susceptibility. We also investigated influence of increased number of horses and dense SNPs on identification of genomic regions associated to IBH susceptibility. Multiple genomic regions with small effects were observed in Studies I-III. Interesting genomic regions in the Icelandic horse population across the studies I and II, was observed on chromosomes 1, 7, 10, 15 and 17. The percentage of the genetic variance explained by top ten windows increased from 3.07% (Study I) to 6.56% (Study II). Novel genomic regions were identified when number of Icelandic horses was increased in Study II. Using dense SNPs on the Exmoor pony population we identified novel genomic regions, on chr 8, associated to IBH susceptibility, though with borderline significance. In Study IV, pre-conceived understanding about evolutionary history of horse populations matched obtained results from investigation of genetic relationships within Dutch warmblood populations (pairwise mean FST ≤ 0.070), and within pony-like populations (pairwise mean FST ≤ 0.078). Horse populations with similar genetic background might share similar genetic components for IBH susceptibility. The Friesian horse population had lowest diversity (mean inbreeding coefficients: fi: 30.4%, fiROH= 22.2%) in Study IV and was genetically distinct (FST ranged from 0.13 to 0.17). This might be a result of a history of several population bottlenecks and selection on a closed breeding scheme. Low diversity in immunity related genes, observed in the Friesian horse population, might have led to increased prevalence of IBH. Similarly, low susceptibility of IBH in a warmblood population, KWPN sport horse population might be due to high genetic diversity ( fi =-6.9%). High genetic diversity in KWPN sport horse population might be a result of an open breeding scheme and interbreeding with other warmblood populations

    Genetic basis for inherited eye diseases in dogs : a case study of pigmentary chorioretinopathy in Chinese Crested Dogs

    As the thesis contains real data and those data is still being used in the process of further confirmation for publication, hence this work shouldn't be published in Barge online database.A novel inherited retinal disease, pigmentary chorioretinopathy, has been observed in one of the oldest purebred breed, Chinese crested. Two forms of progressive retinal atrophy (PRA), Progressive rod con degeneration (prcd) and one other form with unknown genetic basis, has already been observed in the breed. This novel retinopathy showed clinical features of progressive nature with bilateral degeneration, migration of lesions from tapetal to non-tapetal and central area in fundus and end stage leading to blindness. A distinct feature of primary defect in retinal pigment epithelium differentiates this disease from PRA. A genome-wide association study with 170K Illumina CanineHD SNP chip was performed using 19 cases and 21 controls. After correcting for population stratification, applying a combined approach of Mixed model and Structured association in R (GenABEL package), an association analysis using 14 cases and 21 controls resulted in a stronge association with two SNPs (P-raw: 4.59e-06 and 5.74e-06) located around 300 kb apart, on chromosome 8. After further analysis in Ensembl (CanFam 2.0), we found that one of the SNPs was located in an intronic sequence of the gene MDGA2 (MAM domain containing glycosylphosphatidylinostitol anchor 2 - 371.42 kb) and the other was located downstream to this gene. MDGA2 is a member of the immunoglobulin superfamily class (IgCAM) and is involved in cell adhesion, migration and recruitment to inflammatory sites. Sequencing of the coding region of MDGA2 revealed a non-synonymous mutation that caused an amino acid shift from “threonine” to “serine”. The sequence analysis was inconclusive; hence more individuals need to be sequenced for a definite conclusion. Also, a manual gene annotation of MDGA2 is required for a mutation to be concluded as not causative. Hence, additional studies need to be performed to unravel the genetic basis of the disease which will guide us to the possible preventing strategy in near future.2017-12-3

The first chapter introduces the inherent dualism of technology as both a potential alleviator and exacerbator of loneliness, highlighting its significant health and societal impacts, and outlining foundational models for understanding this complex interplay. The second chapter’s literature review examines loneliness across different age groups and genders, considering the influence of stigma, self-esteem, fear of negative evaluation, role loss, and attachment styles. The chapter then examines cultural contexts, contrasting societal types and focusing on Canada’s immigrant and Indigenous experiences. It also analyzes technology’s dual capacity to connect and isolate, considering advancements like AR/VR, AI, and online support, while reviewing loneliness measurement methods. The final chapter discusses the ethics of using technology for loneliness (privacy, consent, bias, autonomy) via CPA guidelines, and proposes future research into diverse populations, ethical tech frameworks, and equitable interventions

    Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
