Ibadism in Oman and developments in the field of Christian – Muslim relationships
The purpose of this study is to explore the relationship between Christians and the IbadT of Oman, as a contribution to Christian-Muslim dialogue. The main focus is an assessment of the contribution offered in the past by the small missionary presence, and of the potential scope and areas of dialogue between the recent guest-worker Christian community, and their hosts - a Muslim country growing in international status. The thesis tells the story of a dynamic engagement in dialogue. The history, customs and beliefs of the country will be outlined, with particular emphasis on meeting points with Christian missionaries. The History of the Imams and Seyyids of Oman by SalTl bin Razlk, translated by CP. Badger and published in 1871, is the source of several more recent works consulted. The Journal of the Arabian Mission of the Reformed Church of America, Neglected Arabia/ Arabia Calling: 1892-1962 and the quarterly The Muslim World (from 1911) have been among other main sources. Some of the many books and articles by Samuel Zwemer have been read; he visited Muscat in Oman on several occasions - his brother Peter contracting a fatal illness while serving there. The IbadT believe their understanding of Islam to be close to that of the Prophet Muhammad; individual in faith, they fiercely claim to be orthodox in their interpretation of the Our'an and they are quick to speak out when they think Its essential tenets are being compromised. They can therefore perhaps afford to be relaxed when it comes to living alongside those who are not themselves IbadT and are willing to listen to them with an open mind. Their courteous meeting with the Christians they welcome to their country offers clues in the wider field of Christian-Muslim relations
Analysis on Methods of Determining Halal or Haram of Animals to Be Eaten According to Syeikh Abdul Malik bin Abdullah in His Kitab al-Kifayah
Kitab al-Kifayah is Malay manuscript written in the seventeenth century or early eighteenth century by Sheikh Abdul Malik bin Abdullah who is also known as Tok Pulau Manis. It contains important discussion on Islamic doctrines (aqidah) and Islamic jurisprudence (fiqh). In on of the chapters, it emphasises haram and halal matters with regard to animal meats for consumption. The issues of halal or haram regarding the rulings of consuming because the Qur'an and the Hadith do not have full explication regarding the ruling of consuming certain type of animals, it has allowed the scholars to explore the issue at hand and derive general principles from it. Based on this premise, this paper identifies the methods used by Sheikh Abdul Malik in determining halal or haram of consuming animal meats and the methods proposed in this book Kitab al-Kifayah. In order to meet these objectives, the documentation method is used by examining three copies of the kitab. The results from this study reveal that the methods proposed by Sheikh Abdul Malik is compatible with those outlined by the legal scholars in the authoritative al-Shafi'i books. However he has not simply cited or translated the content of the scriptures, he was also able to develop his own method for the categories of bird's meat. The categories include birds with talons, birds that hold food in their mouth, birds with ingrown nails, birds that breath whilst drinking water and birds with marks on their necks
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Formulas of preference according to Sheikh Rashid Al-Mawsili (d. 1400 AH) in his interpretation (The first thing said about the verses of revelation)
The research dealt with the formulas of preference used by Sheikh Rashid Al-Mawsili (d. 1400 AH) in his interpretation (The first thing that was said about the verses of the revelation), from the beginning of Surat Al-Fatihah to the end of Surat Al-Nas, and these formulas and methods were varied and multiple between preference and weakness and others, and I divided them into explicit formulas and implicit formulas.
The research included an introduction, then a preface in which I talked about a biography of Sheikh Rashid Al-Mawsili, then three sections, the first section is about the meaning of preference, its importance and conditions, the second section: explicit formulas of preference with practical examples of them, the third section is about implicit formulas of preference with practical examples, then a conclusion that included the most important results that I reached in this research
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
