[EN] This article focuses on the integration of the works of British playwright Peter Shaffer in Spanish culture.

Disentangling Uncivil and Intolerant Discourse in Online Political Talk

    No full text
This chapter takes up the popular argument that much online discussion is toxic and necessarily harmful to democracy. It offers a more nuanced theory by disentangling uncivil from intolerant discourse, arguing that the former should be understood as a rhetorical act that is not in itself problematic, and that the latter is the true threat to democracy. This framework allows scholars to understand the extent to which online discussions represent an actual threat to democratic pluralism and equality. The validity of this theoretical model is demonstrated in the context of public comments in a wide range of political news in two different platforms—news websites and social media in Brazil. The analysis demonstrates that incivility and intolerance can be meaningfully distinguished and suggests that incivility might be normalized in online political talk, but expressions of intolerance are rare. Moreover, the results also show that incivility is a rhetorical act often directed at politicians and political parties, indicating that people express themselves with antinormative intensity to demonstrate their dissatisfaction with the political sphere, rather than to offend other participants in a discussion

Nd: yag laser iridotomy in Shaffer-Etienne grade 1 and 2: angle widening in our case studies

Aim: To obtain widening of a potentially occludable angle, in according to Kanski’s indications, through preventive Nd:Yag laser iridotomy. The observational study was performed by using gonioscopy for the selection and follow-up of 1165 treated eyes and exploiting Shaffer-Etienne gonioscopic classification as a quality/quantity test of the angle recession. Methods: Between September 2000 and July 2012, 586 patients were selected at the Outpatients’ Ophthalmological Clinic of the Policlinico Umberto I of Rome in order to undergo Nd:Yag laser iridotomy. A Goldmann type contact lens, Q-switched mode, 2–3 defocus, and 7–9 mJ intensity with 2–3 impulse discharges were used for surgery. Results: From as early as the first week, a whole 360° angle widening were evident in the patients, thus showing the success of Nd:Yag laser iridotomy in solving relative pupil block. The angle remained narrow by 270° in 14 eyes only, despite repetitions of further treatment with laser iridotomy in a different part of the iris, twice in 10 eyes and three times in 4 eyes. Conclusion: Nd:Yag laser iridotomy revealed itself as being a safe and effective treatment in widening those critical Shaffer-Etienne grade 1 and 2 potentially occludable angles

Carbon nanotube grafted carbon fibres: A study of wetting and fibre fragmentation

    No full text
26/09/12 meb. Author version, OK to pub.Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were grafted on IM7 carbon fibres using a chemical vapour deposition method. The overall grafting process resulted in a threefold increase of the BET surface area compared to the original primary carbon fibres (0.57 m2/g). At the same time, there was a degradation of fibre tensile strength by around 15% (depending on gauge length), due to the dissolution of iron catalyst into the carbon; the modulus was not significantly affected. The wetting behaviour between fibres and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) was directly quantified using contact angle measurements for drop-on-fibre systems and indicated good wettability. Single fibre fragmentation tests were conducted on hierarchical fibre/PMMA model composites, demonstrating a significant (26%) improvement of the apparent interfacial shear strength (IFSS) over the baseline composites. The result is associated with improved stress transfer between the carbon fibres and surrounding matrix, through the grafted CNT layer. The improved IFSS was found to correlate directly with a reduced contact angle between fibre and matrix

    A 2 h periodic variation in the low-mass X-ray binary Ser X-1

    No full text
Spectroscopy of the low-mass X-ray binary Ser X-1 using the Gran Telescopio Canarias have revealed a ?2 h periodic variability that is present in the three strongest emission lines. We tentatively interpret this variability as due to orbital motion, making it the first indication of the orbital period of Ser X-1. Together with the fact that the emission lines are remarkably narrow, but still resolved, we show that a main-sequence K dwarf together with a canonical 1.4 M? neutron star gives a good description of the system. In this scenario, the most likely place for the emission lines to arise is the accretion disc, instead of a localized region in the binary (such as the irradiated surface or the stream-impact point), and their narrowness is due instead to the low inclination (?10°) of Ser X-1
