Co-Habitar

Canine Coronavirus Activates Aryl Hydrocarbon Receptor during In Vitro Infection
The aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) is a ligand-activated transcription factor that interacts with substrates, including microbial metabolites. Recent advances reveal that AhR is involved in the host response to coronaviruses (CoVs) infection. Particularly, AhR antagonists decrease the expression of angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) via AhR up-regulation, resulting in suppression of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection in mammalian cells. Herein, we report that AhR is expressed in canine fibrosarcoma (A72) cells, where it is considerably activated by infection with genotype II of canine coronavirus (CCoV-II). The pharmacological inhibition of AhR, by CH223191, suppressed cell death signs and increased cell viability. Furthermore, the AhR antagonist induced a meaningful decline in virus yield, accompanied by the inhibition of the expression of viral nuclear protein (NP). Fascinatingly, during CCoV infection, a novel co-expression of NP and AhR expression was found. Taken together, our preliminary findings show that infection with CCoV activates AhR, and pharmacologic AhR inhibition reduces CCoV replication, identifying AhR as a possible candidate target for CCoV antiviral therapy
The paratextual framework of «La Filomena»: editorial model and literary model

Radon risk mapping: A new geostatistical method based on Lorenz Curve and Gini index
In confined spaces such as living environments and workplaces, the concentration levels of radon (Rn222) can be
very high as compared to the external environment. Since Rn has been classified as the second leading cause of
lung cancer after cigarette smoking, to apply efficient locally based risk reduction actions, dense maps of indoor
radon concentration are needed. These maps would provide information about the areas prone to high radon
concentrations and therefore more dangerous to human health. The soil is the primary source of the Rn, hence
the risk assessment and reduction for the radon exposure cannot disregard the identification of the local geology.
In this regard, we propose an innovative method, based on the Gini index computation, for the realization of
interpolated maps (kriging) to describe the distribution of concentration of Rn. To validate the method, a tool
that simulates sets of radon concentrations is used, whose variability is, to the first order, controlled by a priori
imposed different lithologies. A systematic comparison is made between the results achieved by means of a
classically used geostatistical method and the proposed Gini-based tool. We show how, by using this latter tool,
the kriging solutions appear to be more robust to resolve the different geogenic radon sources independently
from the number of the available measurements
COGNITIVE INVESTIGATION ON THE KNOWLEDGE OF THE RISK DERIVING FROM RADON EXPOSURE: PRELIMINARY RESULTS
Introduction: For the first time, the Council Directive 2013/59/Euratom focuses on the risk to human health deriving from exposure
to radon in homes, promoting the adoption of more stringent actions for the public awareness about indoor radon risk. Although
the directive has not been transposed in Italy yet, some regions e.g. Campania, independently have issued a regional decree (n.13 of
2019) to comply with this lack.
Method and results: In this study, the results of a survey on the public's knowledge about the risks associated with exposure to
radon collected during two scientific dissemination events “Researchers' Night” (September 2019) and “Futuro Remoto” (November
2019) in Naples, South Italy, are reported
