Development and validation of an eating disorders symptom impact scale (EDSIS) for carers of people with eating disorders

    No full text
Background: Family members of relatives with eating disorders experience high levels of distress due to the difficulties in their care giving role. However no measures have been developed to measure the specific impact that an individual with an eating disorder has on family life. The aim of this study was to develop a measure to assess the specific caregiving burden of both anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa. A secondary aim was to examine whether this measure was sensitive to change. Methods: A new scale, the Eating Disorders Symptom Impact Scale (EDSIS), was generated by a panel of clinicians and researchers based upon quantitative and qualitative work with carers and reviewed by a panel of "expert carers". A cross-sectional study was conducted among carers of relatives with an eating disorder to examine the properties of the new scale. In addition, participants from an ongoing pre-and-post design study completed several self-report questionnaires to assess the sensitivity of the EDSIS to change. Results: A sample of 196 carers of relatives with an eating disorder aged 25–68 compted the scale. A 24-item EDSIS scale was derived with four factors: nutrition, guilt, dysregulated behaviour and social isolation. These explained 58.4% of the variance in carer distress. Reliability was acceptable (Cronbach's alpha ranged from 0.84 to 0.90). The convergent validity of the EDSIS subscales was moderately supported by correlations with a general caregiving measure (Experience of Caregiving Inventory (ECI), r = 0.42 to 0.60), psychological distress (General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-12), r = 0.33) and perceived functioning of the relative (Children Global Assessment Scale (CGAS), r = -30). A sample of 57 primary caregivers completed pre-post intervention assessments and the overall scale (t = 2.3, p < 0.05) and guilt subscale (t = 3.4, p < 0.01) were sensitive to change following a skills training workshop. Conclusion: The EDSIS instrument has good psychometric properties and may be of value to assess the impact of eating disorder symptoms on family members. It may be of value to highlight carers' needs and to monitor the effectiveness of family based interventions

Differential stability of 2'F-ANA*RNA and ANA*RNA hybrid duplexes: roles of structure, pseudohydrogen bonding, hydration, ion uptake and flexibility

14 pags., 7 figs., 3 tabs.Hybrids of RNA with arabinonucleic acids 2′F-ANA and ANA have very similar structures but strikingly different thermal stabilities. We now present a thorough study combining NMR and other biophysical methods together with state-of-the-art theoretical calculations on a fully modified 10-mer hybrid duplex. Comparison between the solution structure of 2′F-ANA•RNA and ANA•RNA hybrids indicates that the increased binding affinity of 2′F-ANA is related to several subtle differences, most importantly a favorable pseudohydrogen bond (2′F-purine H8) which contrasts with unfavorable 2′-OH-nucleobase steric interactions in the case of ANA. While both 2′F-ANA and ANA strands maintained conformations in the southern/eastern sugar pucker range, the 2′F-ANA strand's structure was more compatible with the A-like structure of a hybrid duplex. No dramatic differences are found in terms of relative hydration for the two hybrids, but the ANA•RNA duplex showed lower uptake of counterions than its 2′F-ANA•RNA counterpart. Finally, while the two hybrid duplexes are of similar rigidities, 2′F-ANA single strands may be more suitably preorganized for duplex formation. Thus the dramatically increased stability of 2′F-ANA•RNA and ANA•RNA duplexes is caused by differencesin at least four areas, of which structure and pseudohydrogen bonding are the most important. © The Author(s) 2010. In the whole of Brazilian writer Ana Miranda#s fictional narrative, the travel thematic # considered one of the most fertile themes of the western literature of all times # occupies a central space, and can even been seen as the most important structuring axis of Miranda#s works. The aim of the present thesis is to analyze the treatment given to the travel subject in the novels Desmundo, O retrato do rei, Dias & Dias and Amrik, emphasizing that, through the traveling narrators, Oribela, Mariana, Feliciana and Amina, the author promotes a connection between different cultures, genders, ethnics and generations, at the same time that establishes a profitable dialogue with the past in her invariant problematization concerning the limits and crossings between the fictional and the extra-literary narrative discourses that surrounds it, mainly the historical and the biographic ones

Human trafficking: a comparative analysis of why countries with similar characteristics have different situations

Numerous factors which promote human trafficking have been examined by many scholars, yet little attention has been placed on the role of adolescent single mothers as a significant factor that increases the vulnerability of these young women to trafficking. This study aims to understand and explain why two countries with similar characteristics in geography, political and socio-economic systems present a very different picture in their sex trafficking patterns and challenges. This is a case study that compares Argentina and Brazil along a variety of indicators relevant to human trafficking. Although similar with respect to several characteristics analyzed in their incidence of sex trafficking, Argentina and Brazil do differ in one major factor that on its face could account for the differences in their sex trafficking practices --birth rate among adolescent girls aged 15 to 19. This rate is higher in Brazil than that in Argentina. This study seeks to answer the following questions: 1. - Does this difference account for the difference in sex trafficking practices and if so, how? 2. - Is this difference explained by something else (e.g. other than birth rate)? 3. - What other factors might contribute to the difference in sex trafficking practices? Two main sources of information were used in this comparative analysis: (1) data collected from reports, databases from intergovernmental organizations, governmental agencies, NGOs, and academic literature; and (2) court sentences from both countries, to both flesh out the factors identified, and more importantly, to support or refute the assumption with respect to the role of adolescent birth rates. Both qualitative and quantitative analyses were employed. This study reveals four main differences between Argentina and Brazil that collectively, indeed, shed light on their sex trafficking differences: 1) methods of recruitment, 2) “modus operandi” and government complicity, 3) gender inequality and 4) the incidence of teen single motherhood as a vulnerability factor to trafficking. Findings in this study suggest that matrifocality, the woman-centered family, is a key component in understanding how and why Brazilian adolescent single mothers are an easy target for traffickers.Ph. The aesthetics of the labyrinth: baroque and modernity in Ana Hartherly

The aesthetics of the labyrinth: baroque and modernity in Ana Hartherly aims to study the poetic creation of this Portuguese author pointing out its aesthetics choices in relation to the baroque and the mannerism, particularly the labyrinths (or visual texts) produced in the 17th century. Ana Hatherly, who took part in the Portuguese Experimental Poetry movement (PO-EX), in the 1960\'s, performed a creative rereading of this cultural heritage, and at the same time established a link with forms and procedures of the international vanguard (especially with the Concrete Poetry), pursuing the reinvention of the writing, merging resources of literature, music, painting and other forms of expression. Ana Hatherly\'s renewed writing demands another way of approaching, one that leads the reader into discoveries or constructions of meanings, in a reinvention of the act of reading. Ana Hatherly\'s creative strategy therefor is closely related with the concept of an open piece of work, formulated by Umberto Eco and Haroldo de Campos, and means a type of aesthetic structure that allows multiple interpretations, once a certain set of rules is established by the author (rendering, this way, a gamelike work). That is one of the key concepts to be discussed in this dissertation, where her works, such as Tisanas will be analyzed with additional theoretical support of works by Affonso Ávila, Gustav R. Hocke, and Johann Huizinga. Finally, we shall discuss the concepts of vanguard with theoretical support of Marjorie Perloff, Renato Poggioli and Richard Kostelanetz, aiming to point out how contemporary many of the PO-EX propositions are. Those are not bonded to a determined historical context, and even nowadays can be observed in experiences in the field of the electronic or digital poetry

Does strict employment protection discourage job creation? Evidence from Croatia

    No full text
Employment protection legislation in Croatia is among the most strict in Europe. Firing is difficult and costly, and flexible forms of employment are limited. Is this apparent rigidity reflected-as one would expect based on standard economic theory-in low labor market dynamics? Is job creation low and hiring limited? Is the job security of insiders achieved at the cost of outsiders not being able to enter thelabor market? The author attempts to answer these questions by examining job flows. If the employment protection legislation is binding, then job and worker turnover should be low. He shows that this is indeed the case. Hiring is limited and the average job tenure is very long in Croatia. Job destruction is low, however job creation is still lower. The result is accumulation of unemployment, in large part due to new labor market entrants not being able to find a job. The high degree of job protection also seems to strengthen the bargaining position of insiders and results in relatively high wages. So, wages in Croatia are higher than among its competitors, even after adjusting for productivity. These high labor costs are likely to contribute to limited job creation in existing firms, but also are likely to discourage the entry of-and thus job creation in-new firms. The author presents evidence that firm growth has been indeed limited in Croatia, contributing to the low employment level. The author examines other potential causes of high unemployment in Croatia (the unemployment benefit system, labor taxation, the wage structure, and skill and spatial mismatches). He argues that they do not play a substantial part in accounting for poor labor market outcomes in Croatia. The author concludes that the stringent employment protection legislation is the key labor market institution behind low job creation and high unemployment. Based on this he recommends specific measures aimed at liberalizing the labor market to foster job creation and employment.Labor Management and Relations,Labor Policies,Labor Markets,Environmental Economics&Policies,Trade Finance and Investment,Labor Markets,Labor Management and Relations,Labor Standards,Banks&Banking Reform,Environmental Economics&Policies
