    Seismic damage indices for the San Miguel Charo Ex-Convent in Michoacán, México

    No full text
    This study is the first phase of a research that includes the development of capacity-demand analysis and the estimation of the seismic fragility, for the different two-dimensional Macroelements of the sixteenth century Augustinian building located in Charo, downtown at the northeast of the State of Michoacán, México. The analyses assess expected damage indices from a set of accelerograms recorded during the September 19th 2017 earthquake with epicenter between the states of Puebla and Morelos, México. The event caused damages and collapses in 2340 buildings, including several Augustinian convent complexes with similar characteristics to the one studied in the present work. Two-dimensional models of Rigid Elements for the Macroelements that conform the façade of the church, the nave, the Cloister Arcades and the Pilgrims Portal were built. Incremental nonlinear static analyses were used to define the capacity curves and the capacity spectrum. Considering the average values of the spectral displacements and the standard deviation of the natural logarithm of the spectral displacements for unreinforced masonry structures, fragility curves for each Macroelement were computed. Damage indices were estimated for each Macroelement based on the maximum displacement and hysteretic energy demands. Results showed that most of the damage was concentrated in the cloister, the pilgrim portal and the nave, which highlights the need to carry out more detailed studies, to propose a reliable intervention that would produce an appropriate behavior in future earthquakes with similar characteristics of the 2017’s earthquake. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Switzerland AG

    Pedagogical and digital tool for the tertiary level: the learning eportfolio

    Mundusfor Erasmus Mundus Master Degree - Education of Professionals in EducationThis is a descriptive study about electronic portfolio and its utilisation in Higher Education. It presents and reflects upon the conceptual framework, purposes and benefits of e-portfolios and analyses the different implications of its implementation in the process of learning at the tertiary level of education. The study has been guided by the following research question: How can teachers and students make use of e-portfolios in the process of teaching and learning? Therefore the importance of the utilisation of e-portfolio as a tool for learning has been in the centre of the study and discussions about its applications. This study examines in depth the process and products of eportfolios and how they can be used as a pedagogical tool integrated to “learning to learn” activities. The author has kept the focus on three main purposes, which are followed throughout the study: · To present a practical experience about the use of student e-Portfolio at the tertiary level; · To contribute to the search for improvement of teaching practice at tertiary education covering the new demands European convergence; · To raise discussions about the use and design of e-portfolio as a valid tool for teaching at the university level. The practical activities carried out in two different universities located in two different countries provided the author with the opportunity to examine the implementation of eportfolios in two totally different contexts. Both experiences are described and reflected upon in the study. The main conclusions point out to the importance of using e-portfolios in Higher Education. If properly implemented and used well, e-portfolio can be a powerful tool for capturing student learning because it allows mentors, lecturers or trainers to keep the trace of the students learning. Institutions need to be aware of the impact that electronic portfolio development can have. Results suggest that it is recommendable to integrate e-portfolios with the new forms of pedagogy oriented towards student centered contexts

    Socio-Historical and Cultural Reasons Explaining the Lack of Sex Education in Puerto Rico

    No full text
    This thesis explores the reasons for the lack of an integrated program of sex education by showing that the traditional attitudes that the government and the family hold about the topic impede the teaching of sex education. Methodology includes contrasting traditional attitudes with the increasing rates of illegitimacy, increased rates of adolescent pregnancy and venereal disease and, therefore, how a program of sex education would prevent these negative consequences. Despite increasing sexual activity, the government has not established a sex education program. The government's concern has been with demographic control and not with sex education. The reluctance to establish a sex education program is due to the government’s adherence to the traditional attitude, which is analyzed in this paper as well. The author also researched booklets that are currently distributed by the government that claim to teach topics concerning sex education. However, these booklets show the government's bias in its programs informing about contraception. They are geared to families instead of single sexually active people. Finally, the author traces the role of the family from the 1930’s to the 1950’s and presents an in-depth view of the traditional attitude of the 1950’s and how these changed in the 1980’s

    Actitudes sociales y creencias populares sobre las amas de cría, reflejadas en el romancero tradicional: La nodriza del infante

    La nodriza del Infante (The Prince's Nurse) is a traditional ballad documented in Catalán, French, Sephardic and Spanish. The numerous references to wet-nurses in this and other ballads are related to the ideas that moralists, theologians and physicians expressed about wet-nurses, from the Middle Ages to the present. By comparing those references with these ideas, the author aims to identify the points of agreement and disagreement between such scholarly tradition and that of the community that has orally preserved and transmitted ballads.La nodriza del infante es una balada tradicional que se documenta en lengua castellana, catalana, francesa y sefardí. Las numerosas referencias a las nodrizas en éste y en otros temas romancísticos se relacionan con las ideas expresadas por moralistas, teólogos y médicos, desde la Edad Media a nuestros días. Así se intentan establecer los puntos de acuerdo y de desacuerdo con la comunidad depositaría y transmisora del romancero oral tradicional

    MILLIMETER-WAVE SPECTRUM OF CF2CF_{2}

    This work supported by the U.S. Army Research Office, Grant DAAG29-77-G-0007.Author Institution: Department of Physics, Duke UniversitySmall concentrations of the transient species CF2CF_{2} are present in the discharge products of CF4CF_{4}. Because of the relatively large rotational constants of CF2CF_{2}, most of the transitions which are necessary for a rotation-distortion analysis of this asymmetric rotor fall in the millimeter-wave or shorter region of the microwave spectrum. We have used the results of our measurements, in combination with the longer wavelength measurements of Powell and Lide, to calculate Watson’s reduced spectral constants and to predict a comprehensive millimeter wave spectrum

    ^{*}Work supported by NASA grant number NSG-7540 and the Army Research Office, grant DAAG-29-80-C-WO26.Author Institution:A large number of HO2HO_{2} transitions extending to high K values have been measured in the millimeter and submillimeter spectral region. These data are analyzed by means of an asymmetric rotor formalism that also includes contributions due to electronic effects that arise from the unpaired electron. The HO2HO_{2} was produced by fluorine abstraction of hydrogen from hydrogen peroxide in a free space cell
