Il culto di san Michele in Campania. Antonino e Catello
No full textIl volume, diviso in quattro sezioni, approfondisce l'origine e la diffusione del culto di San Michele in Campania, nelle sue varie espressioni. Nella prima parte vengono indagati gli insediamenti micaelici, con particolare riferimento alle numerose grotte che, sull'esempio di quella garganica, furono dedicate a San Michele soprattutto lungo l'asse Salerno-Avellino- Benevento. Il volume analizza numerosi testi agiografici campani che attestano la presenza dell'Angelo talvolta con generiche funzioni di angelo custode, talaltra con gli attributi tipici di San Michele. Una cospicua sezione del volume è dedicata al dossier agiografico di Antonino e Catello, rispettivamente monaco e vescovo di Sorrento e Stabia, un'area da sempre roccaforte bizantina. Sulla base di elementi storici e di elementi rivenienti dal dossier agiografico viene posticipata all'XI secolo - e quindi di oltre un secolo rispetto alle posizioni della critica- l'epoca di composizione della Vita Antonini (XI secolo). In quest'epoca Sorrento vive un particolare momento di vivacità e di rinnovamento a livello politico, sociale e religioso. Nei testi agiografici Antonino e Catello sono co-fondatori del Santuario del Monte Faito, considerato il santuario nazionale dei Bizantini, anche per ragioni di antagonismo e rivalità con il Santuario di San Michele del Gargano, santuario nazionale dei LongobardiThe book, divided into four parts, is a thorough analysis of the cult of St. Michael in Campania, in its various expressions.
In the first part the author presents micaelici settlements with particular reference to the numerous caves that, based on the example of the Gargano, were dedicated to the Angel, especially along the road Salerno-Avellino-Benevento. The book contains an examination of the hagiographic texts from Campania attesting the presence of Angel, sometimes in its generic function of custos, sometimes with attributes typical of Michael.
The author analyzes the hagiographic dossier of Antoninus and Catello, respectively monaco and bishop of Sorrento and Stabiae. The author basing on historical data and data emerging from the same dossier, delaies more than a century the composition of the Vita Antonini (11th century). In this century Sorrento lived a revival on political-institutional-religious level. The anonymous author of Life - probably a monaco /bishop - approaches Antonino (IX century) and Catello (sixth century) making the abbot of Sorrento co-starred in the foundation of the sanctuary of St. Michael on Mount Fait, considered a national shrine of the Byzantines in Naples, also for reasons of competition with the sanctuary of Mount St. Michael Gargano, traditionally linked to the Lombards
COVID-19 as an effect modifier of the relationship between age and in-hospital survival in older patients admitted to an Italian Emergency Department
No full textBackground: The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic modified how persons got into contact with emergency services, particularly during the first wave. Aim: The aim is to describe the characteristics of older persons with and without COVID-19 visiting the Emergency Department of a tertiary hospital and to investigate the impact of age on in-hospital survival in the two groups. Methods: Patients older than 70 years were followed-up till discharge or in-hospital death. Cox regression models stratified by COVID-19 diagnosis were used to investigate survival. Results: Out of 896 patients, 36.7% had COVID-19. Those without COVID-19 were older and affected by a higher number of chronic conditions but exhibited lower mortality (10.5 vs 48.1%). After the adjustment, age was associated with mortality only among those with COVID-19. Discussion: COVID-19 modified the relationship between older age and in-hospital survival: whether this finding is explained by other biological vulnerabilities or by a selection of treatments based on age should be further investigated
Impact of COVID-19 pandemic and lockdown on emergency room access in Northern and Central Italy
No full textIn Northern Italy the coronavirus infection has spread since February 2020: the increase in admissions of COVID-19 patients corresponded to a drastic decrease in admissions of regular patients to the Emergency Room (ER). This retrospective study was conducted by Academy of Emergency Medicine and Care (AcEMC). During the lockdown period the accesses were reduced by more than 50%, and in the following months of May and June 2020, there was a recovery clearly below (70%) previous year’s numbers. We have observed a drastic reduction in white and green codes, a fair reduction in yellow codes, while red codes remained stable. The decrease in access to the ER mainly concerned patients with low priority color codes, but also the reduction in the number of accesses of yellow and red codes, insignificant at a superficial glance, is notable. If we consider that yellow and red codes during the months of the lockdown included many patients with COVIDrelated respiratory insufficiency, it is evident that there was a clear reduction in the number of serious illnesses not COVID-related. This is certainly another serious consequence of the COVID-19 pandemic

modes based on zero-emission electrical technologies and on the other providing
vehicles with technological solutions that support the drivers in driving operations.
The winning key for mobility in the cities of the near future, therefore, are electrified
transport solutions with assisted driving: the tram is the ideal candidate for this
revolution of green and safe mobility.
Only in 2019, road accidents in the European Union summed up to 22.660 fatalities
and 120.000 people seriously injured. However, the trend of accidents is decreasing
every year and looking to the past, the decrease coincides with the market penetration
of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS).
Nowadays, almost all manufacturers offer cars with level 3 of driving automation (SAE
3 levels) and many prototypes of self-driving vehicles are developing and circulating
on our roads. From a medium-term perspective, all vehicles running in the smart city
will be equipped with autonomous driving technology or advanced driving aids,
including public transport vehicles, such as buses. It is clear, therefore, that even for
trams, the time is ripe to accommodate driving support systems. Just the tram is

experiencing a new spring today, due to its green nature that makes it a candidate for
sustainable city mobility, and it will be the next candidate to host ADAS technologies.
Trams are the combination of two worlds: railways and the road environment. Infect,
unlike the other rail transport systems, use the same road infrastructure as cars,
motorbikes, bikes, and pedestrians and will soon find themselves interacting with
vehicles with increasingly higher autonomous driving levels. It is clear, therefore, that
even for trams, the time is ripe to accommodate driving support systems.
From a technological point of view, tram manufacturers are moving towards the use
and integration of automotive solutions, already available with a high level of maturity
and reliability, based on Sensor Fusion and Perception Platforms.
However, due to the very different stopping times, a careful analysis of the tram
braking dynamics to identify the most suitable technological solution is necessary.
The purpose of my thesis is to provide a contribution to the implementation of a driving
assistance system designed for the tram, here called T-ADAS, by developing a model
for Estimation of the Distance to Collision (DCE) fitted to the tram.
In the thesis, the key elements of technological porting and the choice of functionalities
for a T-ADAS system according to the Degrees of Automation (GoA) are initially
investigated and defined. The degrees/levels of automation in automotive and railway
systems are presented and compared to each other. Then, according to the implication
level of a remote sensing system in each tram driving task, new GoAs for tram are
proposed. These systems are designed to help the tram driver cope with potential
hazards by having defensive driving. Therefore, the proposed GoAs correlated to
ADAS will be useful to understand how this automation acts the action of the tram
driver, and the safety of the entire transport system.
The problem of braking for the tram is then analyzed to define quantitative
requirements for the design and validation of the Forward Collision Earning (FCW)
and Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) systems that takes into account the very
different dynamics from the car. Those technologies are today widespread in the
automotive sector: in fact, vehicle collision warning systems have been studied by
many researchers, and many approaches related to technologies and problem
formulation has been developed and a lot of commercial solutions today are available.
Among the ADAS, FCW-AEB systems represents the one with the highest percentage
of crash avoidance effectiveness: FCW alone, low-speed AEB, and FCW with AEB
reduced rear-end striking crash involvement rates by 27%, 43%, and 50%, respectively.
For this purpose, the proposed DCE model, which uses tram and tramway data (mass,
power, grip, slope, radius of curvature) and real-time data (speed, weather conditions,
and GPS) will allow the calculation of the safety braking distance.
The main difference between the model proposed and those of the literature and/or of
the commercial ones, is mainly related to the vehicle dynamic. Therefore, in the
proposed approach, instead of considering only the deceleration and speed data to
calculate the stopping distance, we consider many other important factors that tune this
calculation to the real one.
The robustness of the model was verified by comparing the values obtained with the
theoretical and real values recorded on the tram, the latter obtained from a test
campaign carried out on Hitachi vehicles in collaboration with an Italian transport
company (ANM) that operates trams in the city of Neaples.
The T-ADAS system is integrated into the vehicle logic by considering the driver's
actions through the manipulator. When the designated braking action is not performed
correctly, the system will adapt the braking curve to model one.
In the final part, the implementation of the T-ADAS in the on-board network of the
tram will be provided and the evaluation of the data traffic is performed.
Infect, the newest railway network infrastructures based on Ethernet bus technologies
can facilitate the integration of the T-ADAS systems with the Train Control
Management System (TCMS), providing larger bandwidth and more flexible networks
making this technology immediately transferable to railway systems such as the tram.

All together now: Disentangling Beatles’ song titles in medical research articles
No full textThe purpose of this paper is to understand the reason(s) why Beatles’ song titles are used as titles for medical research publications. 546 article titles have been collected over a period of 57 years (1965–2022) and linguistically analysed. Titles were classified according to three different perspectives: (1) a textual perspective (level of informativeness); (2) a sentence viewpoint (information packaging and meaning); and at (3) the lexical level (degree of accessibility and referential transparency). Here we show that the Beatles' quotations have gradually augmented over the years, with a peak in 2002, and then a gradual rise up to 2021, with a preference for using compound (57.32%) and nominal (38.09%) titles. As to the way in which information is packaged, titles are primarily focus ones (62.08). Interestingly, well 75.64% titles are constructed with no specialized language, while only 5.86% titles are ‘language as mention’, that is titles with markedly non-specialized items which appear to be borrowed from the song itself and stylistically marked with the actual quotations. Our findings suggest that, by quoting a Beatles song title, the author of the publication clearly creates an attention-seeking device with startling effect. Such an approach does not appear to be dependent on a specific period of time, journal, or Beatles song. They can thus be defined as attractors

No full textThis thesis was submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy and awarded by Brunel University, 15/05/2000.In the post-war period, Italy has been plagued by different forms of organised crime (such as the Sicilian Mafia, the Neapolitan Camorra, the Calabrian 'Ndrangheta and the Pugliese Sacra Corona Unita) which have managed in their individual ways to infiltrate both the State (in the form of political parties and local administrations) and society (businesses, cultural and voluntary organisations). In Campania, until 1991, the relationship between the Camorra and the local political elite (based on the exchange of votes for state contracts and protection) was tacitly accepted by the population and could not be studied by political scientists due to the lack of reliable source material. In 1991, a law was introduced which gave generous remission of sentences to criminals who became state-witness. Many members of the Camorra revealed important aspects of criminal, economic and political activities in Campania. This new material permitted a reexamination of the Camorra. This thesis on the Camorra hopes to fill a gap in the study of the relationship between politics and criminal organisations which so far has concentrated on the Sicilian Mafia. Part One is a general introduction and presents the theoretical model and methods adopted. The documentation available allowed us to adopt an agency-structure approach derived from Giddens's structuration theory (1984). This was complemented by Easton's systems analysis (1965) to understand the wider, macro-environment. We elaborated an 'interaction model' to analyse the changing nature of the Camorra's activities: from a simple social-criminal practice in the 1930s to a dynamic and secret cartel enacting a political-criminal practice in the 1980s. To test this model we applied it to case-studies of criminals using original judicial documents. In Part Two we look at the possible motives of people who join the Camorra. We analysed the agent's internal and external structure in both decades and concluded that the macro-environment as an influencing factor had changed more than the individual-agent. Part Three examines the lives of camorristi in the 1950s and 1980s in order to determine how far their criminal practice has been transformed. Part Four investigates the wider picture of system-interaction between the Camorra's social subsystem and the political system. Focussing on the relationship between camorristi and the political elite in the 1950s and 1980s we highlight the radical changes that occurred. This thesis presents a theoretical discussion of how to study organised crime and social behaviour in general and at the same time a detailed empirical study, in particular of the political role of a criminal organisation in a concrete historical situation, that of Naples over the last forty years.Brunel University; Italian Governmen
