Probabilistic simulation for the certification of railway vehicles
The present dynamic certification process that is based on experiments has been essentially built on the basis of experience. The introduction of simulation techniques into this process would be of great interest. However, an accurate simulation of complex, nonlinear systems is a difficult task, in particular when rare events (for example, unstable behaviour) are considered. After analysing the system and the currently utilized procedure, this paper proposes a method to achieve, in some particular cases, a simulation-based certification. It focuses on the need for precise and representative excitations (running conditions) and on their variable nature. A probabilistic approach is therefore proposed and illustrated using an example.
First, this paper presents a short description of the vehicle / track system and of the experimental procedure. The proposed simulation process is then described. The requirement to analyse a set of running conditions that is at least as large as the one tested experimentally is explained. In the third section, a sensitivity analysis to determine the most influential parameters of the system is reported. Finally, the proposed method is summarized and an application is presented
A new azhdarchid pterosaur from the Late Cretaceous of the Transylvanian Basin, Romania: Implications for azhdarchid diversity and distribution
We describe a new taxon of medium-sized (wing span ca. 3 m) azhdarchid pterosaur from the Upper Cretaceous Transylvanian Basin (Sebeş Formation) of Romania. This specimen is the most complete European azhdarchid yet reported, comprising a partially articulated series of vertebrae and associated forelimb bones. The new taxon is most similar to the Central Asian Azhdarcho lancicollis Nessov but possesses a suite of autapomorphies in its vertebrae that include the relative proportions of cervicals three and four and the presence of elongated prezygapophyseal pedicles. The new taxon is interesting in that it lived contemporaneously with gigantic forms, comparable in size to the famous Romanian Hatzegopteryx thambema. The presence of two distinct azhdarchid size classes in a continental depositional environment further strengthens suggestions that these pterosaurs were strongly linked to terrestrial floodplain and wooded environments. To support this discussion, we outline the geological context and taphonomy of our new specimen and place it in context with other known records for this widespread and important Late Cretaceous pterosaurian lineage
We present the results of the recent research in the Early Iron Age necropolis of Sebes (Flix, Tarragona). They include the delimitation of the necropolis surface and its duration, the analysis of the funerary rituals as well as the social structure of its population through the use of interdisciplinary methods and techniques (anthropology, radiocarbon dating, geophysical surveys...). The coexistence of tumuli and urns as well as the association of structures in two areas is confirmed. On this basis we aim to improve our knowledge of the cremation necropolis in a territory where different burial traditions were in contact. Unpublished data coming from the anthropological study of cremated bones and from the radiocarbon dating of these remains are presented. These data, considered within all the information gathered from the necropolis, show that it is closer to the tumular necropolis of the Lleida area than to the burial sites of the Low Aragón and Terra Alta regions

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
The influence of Islamic Migration on Russian and Spanish Society: Verbalization of the Concept "Moor"
This article analyses the transformation of the concept of "Moor" under the influence of migrations in the Russian and Spanish languages. The authors gathered the primary source material through fieldwork expeditions to the border regions of Russia and Spain. The change in the semantics of the concept "Moor" indicates a shift from labelling a specific "other" (Muslims originally from North Africa who occupied and settled in the Iberian Peninsular in the eighth century) to a more general term for immigrant "others" in both Spain and Russia today. New meanings of the concept of "Moor" in the Russian language have parallels due to the promotion of "Moorish" culture in Europe. The concept of "Moor" expands its meaning in the Russian linguistic worldviews of the world under the influence of migrants from Central Asia and Ukraine. © 2020 Muzeul Municipal Ioan Raica Sebes. Integration of Smoke Effect and Blind Evacuation Strategy (SEBES) within fire evacuation simulation
Many fire evacuation models have been proposed in recent years to better simulate such as an emergency situation. However most of them do not respect a recommendation of fire evacuation experts regarding the fact that evacuees should follow the boundaries of obstacles or wall to find the exits when their visibility is limited by smoke. This paper presents an agent-based evacuation model with Smoke Effect and Blind Evacuation Strategy (SEBES) which respects that recommendation by integrating a model of smoke diffusion and its effect on the evacuee's visibility, speed, and evacuation strategy. The implementation of this model enables us to optimise the evacuation strategies taking into account the level of visibility. The obtained simulation results on a realistic model of the Metro supermarket of Hanoi confirm the important impact of smoke effect and blind evacuation strategy on the number of casualties
