Athens and the Roman Mediterranean: space, euergetism and integration

This thesis discusses the production of the Athenian urban space from 200 BC to 14 AD, analyzing the interaction between euergetic practices, dynastic/imperial propaganda, and local traditions and demands. After a extensive survey of the studies on this subject and their sources and paradigms, the following chapters discuss the Athenian spatial interventions made by or in association with Hellenistic kings, Roman rulers and the imperial family. It is argued that these interventions formed different urban programs with specific spatial logics; and each urban program must dialogue with the earlier ones to assert its own logic. More than a mere metaphor of political history, the spatial history of Late Hellenistic and Early Roman Athens is taken as part of the material culture by which imperial and local political structures (re)produced themselves, in the context of specific Mediterraneans process of integration

The Editorial Board of MATRIZes appreciates when interviews submitted to the journal are conducted with pioneering researchers who have had a strong influence in their field of study, considering that the relatively broad format of this type of text can foster the recapitulation of significant aspects of their trajectories and self-reflective discussions. From this perspective, one name remembered was that of Jean-Claude Bernardet, an author whose contributions have been fundamental to Brazilian film studies. With a personality as multifaceted as that of his mentor, Paulo Emílio Sales Gomes, Bernardet passed away on July 12 of this year, leaving an important mark on national culture as a critic, actor, screenwriter, filmmaker, translator, writer, professor, and university researcher at the School of Communications and Arts of the University of São Paulo (USP). As a way of paying posthumous tribute to Bernardet, the journal reached out to people close to him to verify the existence of any unpublished interviews, and came across filmmaker Fábio Rogério, who kindly shared some materials that had not yet been released in print. Thus, an interview conducted on December 1, 2019, at the Fest Aruanda Hotel in João Pessoa, Paraíba, was selected and edited, in which Bernardet discusses aspects of his biography and his relationship with Brazilian cinema.

This paper explores what we can learn about life through the art of writing about death by taking a closer look at Brás de Oliva Domingos' life, who is a young obituary writer that faces multiple death at the end of each chapter of Daytripper. My essay also delves into Brás' intricate relationship with his father, who is also an author, and navigates through Brás' feelings of grief, loss and mourning after his father has passed away

Studies on secondary metabolites associated with witches' broom disease, floral biology, and seed fermentation in cacao

Theobroma cacao L., a tree native to the Amazon, is cultivated in the tropics throughout the world for its seeds, used primarily for chocolate production. Cacao production is limited by several problems. Cocoa pod borer, an insect that burrows through pods, damages seeds, allowing contamination by toxigenic fungal species. Many fungal diseases infect cacao. Among them, Moniliophthora perniciosa, the causal agentof witches' broom disease, severely affects plantations throughout South America and the Caribbean. Cacao yields are further limited by the naturally low rates of fruit set. Moreover, disease tolerant varieties are usually self-incompatible low producers and do not give a superior chocolate flavor compared to some disease susceptible and selfcompatible genotypes with highly valued aroma compounds. During this project, problems associated with three main aspects of cacao were investigated: disease, production and processing. Studies on plant-endophyte-pathogen interactions allowed for the identification of new possible mechanisms of disease control; studies on cacao flower physiology indicated ways to improve pollination and therefore increase fruit set and crop yield; and investigations of the fermentation step of cacao processing permitted discovery of a method for maintaining higher levels of compounds valued by cacao manufacturers. Flavan-3-ol monomers and oligomers, purine alkaloids and salicylic acid, volatile organic compounds, polyketides and other phenolic compounds were among the determined bioactive compounds found in cacao, pathogens and endophytes, with influence on disease, production, and processing.Ph.D.Includes bibliographical references (p. 210-225)

2013.In the Arendts’ perspective, since the condemnation of Socrates, opened a abyss almost impassable between philosophy and politics. This abyss did with that philosophy would be cut off from the womb of chores as well as public and passes the target man as a being singular, while aiming at the man in the perspective of plurality became exclusivity of the policy. This type of target, second Hannah Arendt, made with that authors such as Descartes, Husserl and Heidegger laughter, to the bosom of their works, what our author will criticize as being the modern solipsism, from which the man is seen as a unique being, isolated of the other, or, when next to them, if decays in relation to its authentic existence. Thus, the aim of this article and examine the consequences of the condemnation of Socrates to the area of political philosophy and, fundamentally, analyze how, this historical landmark/hermeneutic, man was understood, by philosophy, in its singularity naked and alienated from of other individuals.

A Model-Based Systems Engineering Framework for developing Knowledge Based Engineering Applications

    No full text
Knowledge Based Engineering (KBE) is a particularly relevant technology for addressing the increasing complexity of engineering systems, the need for rapid time-to-market, and the need for achieving reductions in the costs of product development. KBE applications can be effective means of automating repetitive engineering design tasks, enabling engineers to enhance their designs through optimization and innovation. However, the current development process of KBE applications can be improved, as it has shortcomings that limit a wider adoption of KBE technology. Currently, two primary approaches are employed in the development of KBE applications. The first approach involves directly coding the engineering knowledge within the application itself, while the second approach entails modeling the engineering knowledge outside the application and subsequently converting it into executable code, manually. Both approaches result in applications that are perceived, to varying degrees, as “black boxes”. This makes it challenging to understand how the application reaches its conclusions, which can hinder the end-user's trust in the application and limit its acceptance. To date, a suitable methodology to effectively support KBE app development is lacking, which has considerable implications on the time required for application development, as well as the quality of the applications in terms of traceability of requirements and domain knowledge within the KBE application code, the applications' maintainability and scalability, and (eventually) the ability to preserve and efficiently reuse engineering knowledge. To address the outlined shortcomings of the current KBE app development process, this thesis proposes a novel framework for the development of KBE applications, based on Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) concepts, to model domain knowledge and requirements, and to support (semi-)automatic generation of KBE apps through visual editing, as opposed to standard coding. The key objectives of this framework are to improve knowledge capture and formalization, requirements traceability, and knowledge reuse in KBE applications. In the proposed framework, the knowledge required for developing a KBE application is first captured in a formal knowledge model that uses the industry-standard Systems Modeling Language (SysML). Source code is then automatically generated for the targeted KBE system (ParaPy) using a model-to-code tool developed in this research. Traceability of requirements onto the various elements of the KBE app architecture is also provided, thereby reducing the typical black-box effect of KBE applications. Furthermore, the framework allows to reuse knowledge from previously generated knowledge models, enabling effective project-to-project knowledge transfer. This thesis presents the development of three distinct KBE applications using the proposed framework, with the aim of evaluating it in terms of ease of modeling, development time, and quality of the automatically generated (skeleton) code. Preliminary results show that the learning curve to modeling is intuitive and easy enough to learn; the time required for generating the knowledge models is lower than current modeling processes; the automatically generated code is error-free, well-structured, and complies with existing coding standards, providing a correct starting point for further app development, while resulting in time savings in the development of the app skeleton.Aerospace Engineerin
