Oil politics : a modern history of petroleum / Francisco Parra.

    No full text
Includes bibliographical references (pages 353-360) and index.ix, 364 pages :The politics of oil revolves around its price and the reliability of its suppliers. In turn, many international conflicts in the world today are rooted... in these politics. Not surprisingly: the price of oil is managed by a cartel-OPEC-some of whose member governments are deeply hostile to the United States and other major importers of oil. And OPEC controls nearly two-thirds of the world's oil reserves. Ironically, the United States and many others, especially non-OPEC producers of energy, have come to rely on OPEC to set prices that encourage the development of high-cost oil elsewhere, and thus promote some diversity of supply.Fundamental to any understanding of the politics of the contemporary world is an understanding of the politics and most recent history of petroleum. Francisco Parra, drawing on his long and varied experience in international oil, sets out the events that have shaped the industry over the past fifty years--the displacement of coal as the world's prime fuel; the tight control of international oil by the seven major oil companies (all US or British), monopolizing production in the Middle East and Venezuela; the rise of OPEC and the ousting of the companies in a bitter struggle in which the companies were abandoned by their home governments; how the world was hypnotized for more than a decade by the delusion of impending depletion; and the political turbulence that has led to wars in the Middle East, to US sanctions on Iran, Iraq, and Libya, and, most recently, to the invasion of Iraq. After a surge in non-OPEC oil production in the 1980s and 1990s, dependence on the Middle East is increasing and OPEC's control over price is volatile. Parra asks whether this enduring predicament-that holds the threat of political conditions being attached to the supply of oil-can be managed by the "West", to avert successive and deepening crises in the pricing and supply of oil and in the world at large

Decarbonization of cement production by electrification

    No full text
This study presents the techno-economic assessment of four electrified cement plants: i) using direct electrification and plasma technologies (eC-pK case); ii) consisting of indirect electrification via H2 combustion and oxycombustion of alternative fuels (OC-HK); iii) combining direct electrification, alternative fuels combustion and post-combustion CO2 capture (eC-afK); iv) consisting in the electrification of the hydraulic Calcium Hydro Silicate production process (e-hCHS). Process modeling in Aspen Plus is used to estimate mass and energy balances and calculate techno-economic key performance indicators. The study finds that all the electrified alternatives achieve high levels of equivalent CO2 emissions avoidance (87.2%-101.8%), with a trade-off between the electricity demand (604-1341 kWh/tclk) and the amount of captured CO2 to be handled by the transport & storage infrastructure (357-834 kgCO2/tclk). With an electricity price of 50 euro/MWh, the partially electrified alternatives (OC-HK, eC-afK) showed competitive additional cost of clinker (87 euro/tclk) and cost of avoided CO2 (101 euro/tCO2) against a benchmark case, though higher than the cost of the best CO2 capture technologies from the literature. The eC-pK case resulted in lower economic performance associated mainly to the higher price of electricity per unit of final energy supplied compared to alternative fuels

Rights and cultural expressions: analysis of the use of public space within the legal framework of the Colombian State

    No full text
Universidad Libre Seccional Socorro -- Facultad de derecho, ciencias políticas y sociales -- Maestrian en derecho administrativoThe object of this research is the analysis of the legal figure of "public space" with respect to cultural rights and social expressions around the Colombian regulatory framework, with a view to being able to analyze in what form and extent the components that make up Public spaces really allow the materialization of these rights. So the main contributions are the possibility of understanding public spaces based on cultural identity and the different parameters that in Colombia materialize the rights of people to enjoy a social environment. Hence, research serves to strengthen the social fabric and provide new knowledge regarding a topic that, even if it seems obvious in practice, problems can actually be found that even today the State does not provide a solution

Hoplosauris macarenae can be distinguished from the other species of the genus by dark reddish scales covering the forewings, head and thorax. Male uncus with a blunt apex. Microspines located on the posterior half of the corpus bursae. These two characters are the autapomorphies for the species. Subrectangular saccus. Description. Male (Figure 1c). Head: Antennae sub-apically thickened, covered by light reddish scales. Vertex and forehead with dark brown scales. Labial palpi with white apex and brown basis. Thorax: white, the same for the patagia and tegula. Tegula with piliform scales extending posteriorly. Forewings: upperside whitish. Basal line dark brown reddish. Stripe, located between the basal and medial lines, whitish. Medial line brown becoming reddish towards its basis, the rest light brown reddish. Medial line border brown becoming reddish towards the apex. Postmedial line dark brown reddish and orange towards its apex. Terminal line represented by brown semicircles. Discal mark brown reddish. Underside light brown reddish, lighter towards the anal margin of the wing. Hindwings: reduced and with a hairy concave vesicle; upperside whitish, underside whitish with a brown reddish discal cell. Abdomen whitish, with a tuft of scales on the sides of the medium region. Fore and mid legs with white and dark brown intercalated stripes. Hind legs white. Female. Similar to the male, without reduced hindwings and without a hairy concave vesicle on the anal margin. Male genitalia (Figures 5a, c). Uncus curved, with a blunt apex, subtriangular base, approximately ½ to length of valvae. Valvae sub-rectangular, with androconia at sub-apical position. Costa slightly sclerotized.
