Montage by Klaus-Peter Brenner of two audio tracks: (1) Malaŵian Sena ntano polyphonic multi-part singing. Track B3 from Gerhard Kubik and Moya Aliya Malamusi (1989), Südliches Malaŵi. Musiker aus Malaŵi. “Opeka nyimbo” Musiker-Komponisten. / Southern Malaŵi: Musicians from Malaŵi. “Opeka nyimbo” Musician-composers. Berlin: Musikethnologische Abteilung, Museum für Völkerkunde Berlin, Staatliche Museen Preußischer Kulturbesitz. MC 15. Double LP. (2) Excerpt of the Shona mbira dzavadzimu piece “Nhemamusasa”, kushaura and kutsinhira parts both played by the author; one harmonic cycle extracted, looped and tempo digitally increased according to the original tempo of recording (1). Excerpts of both tracks are looped and digitally superimposed in order to demonstrate their remarkable degree of structural congruence. Discussion of the montage in Klaus-Peter Brenner (2020), “A Grammatical Merger of Heterogeneous Musical Structures: The Vocal Polyphony Ntano of the Sena of Southern Malaŵi.” In Understanding Musics: Festschrift on the Occasion of Gerd Grupe\u27s 65th Birthday, ed. Malik Sharif and Kendra Stepputat, 125–151. Düren: Shaker

Apple snail perivitellins, multifunctional egg proteins

    No full text
Egg reserves of most gastropods are accumulated surrounding the fertilised oocyte as a perivitelline fluid (PVF). Its proteins, named perivitellins, play a central role in reproduction and development, though there is little information on their structuralfunctional features. Studies of mollusc perivitellins are limited to Pomacea. A proteomic study of the eggs of P. canaliculata identified over 59 proteins in the PVF, most of which are of unknown function, and have not been isolated and characterised. Information on molecular structure of the most abundant perivitellins of P. canaliculata have shown that they possess other functions besides being storage proteins, most remarkably in defence against predation and abiotic factors. They are a cocktail containing at least neurotoxic, antinutritive and antidigestive perivitellins, with others that may provide the eggs with a bright and conspicuous colour (aposematic signal). This review compiles the current knowledge of Pomacea perivitellins with emphasis on the novel physiological roles they play in the reproductive biology of these gastropods that have evolved the ability to lay their eggs above the water.Fil: Heras, Horacio. Transitando entre a Diáspora e a Terra de Israel no romance "Mikan Umikan" de Yossef Haim Brenner

    No full text
Transiting between Diaspora and the Land of Israel in the novel "Mikan Umikan" by Yossef Haim Brenner - Abstract:  "Mikan Umikan" ("From Here and From There") is the first novel by Brenner published in Palestine, in 1911. Brenner, who immigrated to Palestine in the second wave of immigration (Second Alia), was born in the Ukraine in 1881 and died in Palestine in 1921. In this novel, Brenner moves between two worlds: the world of tradition and the Diaspora and the new world where he is reborn in an ancient land which presents him with doubts and questions. If until Brenner’s time Hebrew literature presented an idyllic view of the land of Israel, in this work the author portrays the land from a realist perspective. His work is characterized by a deep pessimism in regards to the world surrounding him
