No full textThis thesis is a critical analysis of W.G. Sebald‘s Luftkrieg und Literatur (On the Natural History of Destruction) and its reception in the German media and in scholarship. Sebald‘s essay caused a public debate in 1997 over the ethical implications of a cultural memory of the Allied bombings of German cities in the Second World War. Since then, the essay has come to be understood as a foundational moment in the discourse surrounding 'German victimhood' in representations of the bombings and the expulsions of ethnic Germans from the Eastern territories

No full textBibliotheken und Archive werden in funktional-soziologischer Sicht als sekundäre Gedächtnissysteme betrachtet, deren Hauptfunktion nicht im Erinnern sondern im Vergessen besteht. Durch Indexierungs- und Katalogisierungsmethoden wird den Zugriff auf Information organisiert. Dies geschieht stets in hochselektiver Weise, damit der Leser keine Zeit verschwendet und seine Aufmerksamkeit nicht durch das Nachschlagen von Überflüssigem oder Nichtzutreffendem vergeudet wird. Bereits in der frühen Moderne werden daher Indexierungssysteme erstellt, die wie eine heutige Suchmaschine funktionieren. Die spätere Automatisierung der sekundären Gedächtnisse ersetzt die semantische Indexierung durch eine statistische Datenverarbeitung. Dies führt zu neuartigen Problemen, nicht zuletzt zu einem zugespitzten Selektionsbedarf in einer Gesellschaft, die offenbar nichts mehr vergessen kann

No full textA risk-averse price-setting firm which knows the quantity demanded at the status quo price but has imperfect information otherwise may choose not to change it although an otherwise identical risk-neutral firm would do so, provided the variance of the firm's subjective probability distribution over quantities demanded as a function of price displays a kink at the status quo. This is equivalent to risk aversion of order one.
