Formal Specification and Model Checking of the Tendermint Blockchain Synchronization Protocol (Short Paper)
Blockchain synchronization is one of the core protocols of Tendermint blockchains. In this short paper, we discuss our recent efforts in formal specification of the protocol and its implementation, as well as some initial model checking results. We demonstrate that the protocol quality and understanding can be improved by writing specifications and model checking them
Beyond Secondary Structure: Primary-Sequence Determinants License Pri-miRNA Hairpins for Processing
To use microRNAs to downregulate mRNA targets, cells must first process these ∼22 nt RNAs from primary transcripts (pri-miRNAs). These transcripts form RNA hairpins important for processing, but additional determinants must distinguish pri-miRNAs from the many other hairpin-containing transcripts expressed in each cell. Illustrating the complexity of this recognition, we show that most Caenorhabditis elegans pri-miRNAs lack determinants required for processing in human cells. To find these determinants, we generated many variants of four human pri-miRNAs, sequenced millions that retained function, and compared them with the starting variants. Our results confirmed the importance of pairing in the stem and revealed three primary-sequence determinants, including an SRp20-binding motif (CNNC) found downstream of most pri-miRNA hairpins in bilaterian animals, but not in nematodes. Adding this and other determinants to C. elegans pri-miRNAs imparted efficient processing in human cells, thereby confirming the importance of primary-sequence determinants for distinguishing pri-miRNAs from other hairpin-containing transcripts.National Institutes of Health (U.S.) (Grant GM067031)National Institutes of Health (U.S.) (Grant T32GM007753

Activation material selection for multiple foil activation detectors in JET TT campaign
In the preparation for the Deuterium-Tritium campaign, JET will operate with a tritium plasma. The T + T reaction consists of two notable channels: (1) T + T -> He-4 + 2n, (2) T + T -> He-5 + n -> He-4 + 2n. The reaction channel (1) is the reaction with the highest branching ratio and a continuum of neutron energies being produced. Reaction channel (2) produces a spectrum with a peak at 8.8 MeV. A particular problem is the ratio between the individual TT reaction channels, which is highly dependent on the energy of the reacting tritium ions. There are very few measurements on the TT spectrum and the study at JET would be interesting.The work is focused on the determination of the spectral characteristics in the TT plasma discharges, especially on the presence of the 8.8 MeV peak, a consequence of channel (2) of the TT reaction. The possibility to use an optimized set of activation materials in order to target the measurement of the 8.8 MeV peak is studied. The lower limit of detection for the channel (2) ratio within the TT reaction is estimated and the influence of DT source neutrons, which are a consequence of deuterium traces in the plasma, is investigated
Beyond Magritte\'s pipe: messianism and utopia in the construction of Subcomandante Marcos
O trabalho tem o objetivo central de identificar como se construiu historicamente a figura do Subcomandante Marcos, na esteira do processo de formação do movimento zapatista em Chiapas. Marcos, cuja identidade era ocultada por si mesmo (embora o governo mexicano tenha declarado publicamente, em 1995, que ele era o professor Rafael Sebastián Guillén Vicente), é o principal porta-voz do Exército Zapatista de Libertação Nacional (EZLN) e destaca-se como figura-símbolo do referido movimento. Diante disso, busca-se apresentar a importância chave do indivíduo para o movimento zapatista (no plano intelectual e político), bem como compreender como se deu a dissolução de sua própria individualidade no plano simbólico na medida em que Marcos pareceu encarnar o ideário revolucionário zapatista. A ênfase analítica, para tanto, recairá sobre os aspectos de messianismo inseridos nesse processo, assim como sobre os elementos que sinalizem em Marcos a representação da própria experiência utópica, para que então se compreenda as razões pela quais sua liderança pareceu ter uma dimensão sui generis. Tal análise, feita a partir do levantamento de fontes primárias e da revisão da literatura secundária, mostra-se necessária frente à constatação de que o zapatismo constituiu-se como um dos movimentos políticos mais relevantes da contemporaneidade. Assim, realizando um estudo sistemático desse conjunto de aspectos, busca-se articular os temas de modo pertinente, para que se compreenda, então, o significado histórico deste ator político contemporâneo.This work aims to identify the historical construction of Subcomandante Marcos image, in the wake of the process of the construction of the Zapatista movement in Chiapas, Mexico. Marcos, whose real identity is hidden by himself (though the Mexican government publicly declared in 1995 that he is Professor Rafael Sebastián Guillén Vicente), is the main spokesperson of the Zapatista Army of National Liberation (EZLN) and stands as a symbol-image of the movement. Therefore, the dissertation seeks to present this individuals key importance to the movement (in the intellectual and political spheres), as well as understanding the dissolution of his own individuality (in the symbolic sphere) as Marcos seems to incarnate the revolutionary ideas of Zapatismo itself. The analytical emphasis, therefore, is on the messianist aspects inserted in this process, as well as on the elements that demonstrate representations of his own utopian existence, in order to understand the reasons why his leadership seems to have a sui generis dimension. This analysis, based on a thorough survey of primary and secondary sources, is relevant because the Zapatistas have established themselves as one of the most relevant contemporary political and social movements. Thus, conducting a systematic study of these aspects, it seeks to understand the historical importance of Subcomandante Marcos within the context of the rise of the Zapatistas

Advancements in TlBr for Gamma-Ray Detection and Imaging
Thallium bromide is an attractive material for room-temperature gamma-ray spectroscopy and imaging because of its high atomic number (Tl: 81, Br: 35), high density (7.56 g/cm3), and a wide bandgap (2.68 eV). TlBr detectors can achieve better than 1% FWHM at 662 keV for single-pixel events, but these results are limited to stable operation at −20 °C. After days to weeks of room-temperature operation, ionic
conduction leads to device failure, or polarization. In this work, methods for extending the room-temperature lifetime of these detectors was investigated, and stable operation for greater than 3 months was achieved using special surface processing techniques. Additionally, the effects of intermediate temperature operation (between −20 °C and room temperature) were investigated and noticeably longer lifetimes were observed with cooling to only 2 °C. This can help reduce the cooling power requirements
in field deployable systems if longer term stability at room temperature cannot
be achieved.
Important material characterization is also presented including the use of detailed waveform analysis showing that some TlBr detectors have charge multiplication by drifting holes and the measurement of the ionization energy of TlBr. Which when corrected for trapping was shown to be below 5.5 eV. This means the limiting theoretical performance is close to CZT even with TlBr’s wider bandgap.
The performance of large volume (12 x 12 x 5 mm3) TlBr detectors is presented;
measured using newly developed digital ASIC based systems. These systems include both benchtop systems which have cooling for the detectors and a prototype hand-held system designed for room-temperature operation. 2.2 % FWHM at 662 keV for all single-pixel events was achieved by the best large volume detector. Better performance should be achievable with these systems with improvements in material as more focus is placed on growing and fabricating large volume detectors.PhDNuclear Engineering & Radiological SciencesUniversity of Michigan, Horace H.
