From Teacher to Learner to Teacher - Primary School Teachers as learners of English: the experiences in Parma, Reggio Emilia and Salsomaggiore Terme
As English language trainers of Primary School Teachers over the past few years, in this paper we aim to present our own experiences and the experiences of our teacher-learners.
Our learners are 'unusual' students in that they are not only learners who are also working, but are teachers themselves who will go and teach what we have taught them in their own language classroom. This is a challenge for us as trainers, as we are constantly judged by students who, in a way, are our colleagues. Being experienced teachers, they are often able to understand the underlying methodology of what we are doing, and are looking for strategies and techniques they will be able to adopt in class with their own pupils. At the same time they are dealing with teaching children at school as well as a new course. Sitting behind a desk as a student after several years of teaching is a challenge for them too.
All these elements have contributed to increasing our own self-awareness as ‘teachers of teachers’ and their self-awareness as ‘teacher learners’ of the English language. Indirectly, this implies both self-development and teacher development for both ourselves and our students.
What we are interested in as trainers is not only the immediate reaction of our learners but also, and especially, what happens when the course is over and they enter their classrooms as teachers. Our aim is to produce motivated teachers who want to continue improving both their English and their teaching skills
Nonheteronormative protagonist in the novel "Upon the black water" by Halina Górska
This article is focused on the representation of nonheteronormative protagonist in the novel Nad czarną wodą (Upon the Black Water) by Halina Górska. Stile colloquiale e turpiloquio fra intraducibilita e problemi di dosaggio sull’esempio di Novecento di Alessandro Baricco nella traduzione polacca di Halina Kralowa
COLLOQUIALISMS AND VULGARITIES AS A TRANSLATION PROBLEM: HALINA KRALOWA’S TRANSLATION OF NOVECENTO BY ALESSANDRO BARICCOThe article deals with the problem of translations of colloquialisms and vulgarities in a literary work, on the example of Halina Kralowa’s translation of Novecento by Alessandro Baricco. The author points to the difficulties in the choice of equivalent words and expressions in terms of context they were placed in, the intensity of expression and style, while taking into consideration also the cultural factors which determine the permissible limits of vulgarity in the target language, in respect to both spoken word and a literary work. Apart from that, the article presents several examples of the Italian colloquial style typical of the spoken language – based on the change of the word order in a sentence or the pleonastic use of pronominal particle ci – which prove that the style is not always possible to translate.COLLOQUIALISMS AND VULGARITIES AS A TRANSLATION PROBLEM: HALINA KRALOWA’S TRANSLATION OF NOVECENTO BY ALESSANDRO BARICCOThe article deals with the problem of translations of colloquialisms and vulgarities in a literary work, on the example of Halina Kralowa’s translation of Novecento by Alessandro Baricco. Space of Disease – Place of Biography. Psychosomatic Cartography in Halina Poświatowska’s Opowieść dla przyjaciela
The author uses psychosomatic cartography to interpret Halina Poświatowska’s autobiographic text Opowieść dla przyjaciela. She discovers that the disease-generated new topography denies traditional places in biography, and that its meaning is frequently shifted in the narrative. The disease plays manifold role in creating the discourse, and here the most important processes include the following aspects: shaping discursive space of the disease, reinterpreting traditional places in autobiography, weaving the hospital episodes into the patient’s autonarrative identity, and also connecting the metaphors of bodily and spatial experience. This multidimensional analysis finally allows the question about the true nature of the status of language, body, and death as auto-bio-geo-graphical places.Uniwersytet Gdański20522
