The Encounter between the West and the Arab World in the Age of Nahdah (Renaissance). The Translation Movement in the Arab Literary Reviews

    No full text

Native ungulates (Litopterna and Notoungulata: Mammalia) from the “Mesopotamiense” (Late Miocene) of Entre Ríos province, Argentina

    No full text
The extensive temporal and geographical isolation of South America during most of the Cenozoic allowed the development of an exclusive terrestrial fauna in this region. Within this fauna are the so-called South American native ungulates, which are widely spread in Argentina. During the late Miocene, these ungulates were represented by the orders Litopterna and Notoungulata. In Entre Ríos Province, two litoptern (Proterotheriidae and Macraucheniidae) and two notoungulate families (Toxodontiidae and Interatheriidae) are recorded from the “Mesopotamiense” or “Conglomerado osífero”, base of the Ituzaingó Formation. The study of these groups has been addressed by different authors since the end of the XIX century. The aim of this chapter is to summarize the main information on the Entre Ríos taxa and to show the current state of knowledge on the biogeographic history of this South American particular fauna.Fil: Schmidt, Gabriela Ines.

    No full text

Milk molars or extra premolars in Mesotheriinae (Mesotheriidae, Notoungulata): New insights into an old controversy

    No full text
A recently recovered specimen of Mesotheriinae (Mesotheriidae, Notoungulata) from the late Miocene-early Pliocene of La Rioja Province (Argentina), CRILAR Pv 433, corresponds to an individual with three upper premolars, which appears to be an "anomaly" among mesotheriines. The detailed study of this specimen, however, brings up an old controversy on the interpretation of different mesotheriine specimens with three upper or two lower premolars. After being described as different taxa, these were later considered to be juvenile representatives of other known species. The three upper or two lower teeth were interpreted as the milk molars DP2-4 and dp3-4, respectively, which would be replaced in adult life just for two upper (P3-4) and one lower (p4) permanent premolars. The new material leads us to set up a different interpretation. In our opinion, all these specimens actually preserve the permanent dentition, corresponding to different ontogenetic stages of more or less young individuals. This consideration implies the necessity of a deep systematic revision of the whole subfamily keeping in mind this new point of view and the ontogenetic variation within a species. Therefore, the presence of P2/p3 is not enough to define a different taxon at this moment. Pending this taxonomic revision, the dental morphology of CRILAR Pv 433 resembles both Typotheriopsis (e.g., upper premolars with one labial sulcus) and Pseudotypotherium (e.g., P4 with lingual groove, wide median lobe of M3) as these two Late Miocene genera are currently characterized. Furthermore, P2/p3 could be expelled soon in the lifetime of individuals, and even the presence of P2/p3 could be a variable character within the same taxon; if so, this might reflect an evolutionary trend to the loss of a dental element within mesotheriines, but the revision of a large sample is necessary to support or reject these hypotheses.Fil: Cerdeño Serrano, Maria Esperanza. Proterotheriidae (Mammalia, Litopterna) from the Cerro Azul Formation (late Miocene), La Pampa Province, Argentina

    No full text
Remains of Proterotheriidae (Litopterna) recovered from different localities in La Pampa Province, Argentina, are described. The fossiliferous levels in these localities correspond to the Cerro Azul Formation (late Miocene), where Chasicoan and Huayquerian faunal associations are known. The specimens of Proterotheriidae herein studied are assigned to Diplasiotherium pampa, Eoauchenia primitiva, cf. Brachytherium cuspidatum, Neobrachytherium sp. and Proterotheriidae indet. Although the holotype of D. pampa (left mandibular fragment with p3-m2) was defined in a previous paper, it is figured and fully described here, and its m3 is now known among the new collected specimens. Eoauchenia, Brachytherium and Neobrachytherium are registered in La Pampa Province for the first time, and the record of E. primitiva extends back to late Miocene its temporal distribution. Proterotheriids from the Cerro Azul Formation gather exclusive elements and others related to taxa represented in different Argentinean geological units corresponding to late Miocene-early Pliocene period.Fil: Schmidt, Gabriela Ines. (Xenarthra, Cingulata); Paedotherium minor Cabrera, cf Pseudotypotherium Ameghino (Notoungulata, Typotheria); Neobrachytherium Soria (Litopterna, Lopholipterna); Orthomyctera Ameghino, cf. Cardiomys Ameghino, Lagostomus (Lagostomopsis) Kraglievich, y Octodontidae indet. (Rodentia, Caviomorpha). This study analyzes a collection of fossil mammals from the Salicas Formation in the El Degolladito area, La Rioja Province, Argentina. The materials reported herein were recovered from two sites (site 1 and site 2) and are: Macrochorobates Scillato-Yané, Chasicotatus Scillato-Yané, and Hoplophorini indet. (Xenarthra, Cingulata); Paedotherium minor Cabrera, cf Pseudotypotherium Ameghino (Notoungulata, Typotheria); Neobrachytherium Soria (Litopterna, Lopholipterna); Orthomyctera Ameghino, cf. Cardiomys Ameghino, Lagostomus (Lagostomopsis) Kraglievich, and Octodontidae indet. (Rodentia, Caviomorpha). This new mammalian assemblage, together with one previously recorded, has several taxa in common with mammalian associations from Central Argentina (i.e., La Pampa Province). Among those coming from Northwestern Argentina, the major affinity is with the El Jarillal Member (Chiquimil Formation) and then the Andalhuala Formation (both in Catamarca Province). The Salicas Formation fauna is considered as latest Miocene in age until new fossil discoveries and radioisotopic dates allow a better calibration. The fossil biota and geological data suggests that the Salicas Formation was deposited in flatlands, under warm and dry conditions. This environment was probably dominated by open grasslands, with forested areas near rivers and lagoons.Fil: Villafañe, Amalia Leonor. Museo Paleontológico Egidio Feruglio; Argentina. Video Game, Author and Lemming: The Knowledge-Building Process

    No full text
Many studies show that video games require attentive and interpretive capacity to generate complex cognitive skills in the gamer and they can be transferred to other contexts, such as school. In this paper, the authors do not aim to investigate the contents of the player’s thinking, but rather his/her way of thinking. In this scenario the teacher becomes a worlds’ maker, who provides his/her students with the tools allowing them to partake in the co-building of multi-tiered worlds, which requires not only the ability to get access to intangible information but also a skillful management of media interfaces. In this way, the click of the mouse becomes the action par excellence that allows each individual to contribute synergistically to the realization of the digital habitats. The ultimate goal is to search, in the learning processes activated by the video games in both the authors and the lemming, those features that make the learner a self-knowledge builder. Such “socio-cultural grammar” influences the writing and interpretation of messages, turning every individual into an author, who’s often unaware of the “scriptwriting culture” that inhabits all the possible media worlds
