Public worship and practical theology in the work of Benjamin Keach (1640-1704)
The late seventeenth century was a critical and fruitful period
for the Particular Baptists of England. Severely persecuted following
the Restoration, toleration in 1689 brought its own perils.
Particular Baptists were fortunate in having several strong leaders,
especially the London trio of Hanserd Knollys, William Kiffin, and
Benjamin Keach. Such a small and severely persecuted group as the
Baptists could afford little time for academic pursuits, thus of
necessity most of their theology was practical in nature.
Benjamin Keach (1640-1704) was the most outstanding practical
theologian among the English Particular Baptists of the late
seventeenth century. This dissertation is a study of Keach, in
particular his writings on public worship and practical theology.
Although Keach was a prolific author, he has been almost completely
neglected by scholars.
After a biographical sketch of Keach, this study considers his
writings on public worship and practical theology. In the area of
worship, Keach made two outstanding contributions: First, he was the
most vocal apologist for Baptist views on Baptism of his period.
Secondly, and more importantly, his hymn writing and defense of hymn
singing broke new ground, not just for Baptists, but for English
Protestantism, in general. In addition to his contributions in these
areas, he also dealt with the laying on of hands and the sabbath day
worship controversy.
Keach's contributions to practical theology fall into two main
groups: his writings that concern religious education and those that
deal with polity. In addition to these, Keach's vigorous advocacy of
a high Calvinist soteriology are also considered under the rubric of
practical theology. Keach's most important (although not his most
positive) contribution in this area were his soteriological writings.
Although well within the bounds of orthodoxy, some of the tendencies
in Keach's soteriology were taken up by the following generation of
Baptist leaders and developed into a stultifying hyper-Calvinism that
handicapped Baptist evangelism and missions.
In the conclusion, Keach's contributions to a theory of practical
theology are considered
The non-commutative standard model
In this work aspects of the classical Connes-Lott non-commutative standard model are examined. In particular the relationship between the chiral structure of the standard model and the condition of Poincaré Duality is investigated. Then the natural prediction of an additional force in the non-commutative standard model is explained and the consequences calculated. Finally the attempts at grand unification within the non-commutative framework are reviewed and extended
Sharp ill-posedness result for the periodic Benjamin-Ono equation (ERRATUM : PAPER WITHDRAWN)

The corrected calculus gives actually zero which do not lead to a contradiction on the continuity of the flow-map of the Benjamin-Ono equation. Tagging of Biomedical Articles on CiteULike: A Comparison of User, Author and Professional Indexing
This paper examines the context of online indexing from the viewpoint of three different groups: users, authors, and professional indexers. User tags, author keywords and descriptors were collected from academic journal articles, which were both indexed in Pubmed and tagged on CiteULike, and analysed. Descriptive statistics, informetric measures, and thesaural term comparison shows that there are important differences in the use of keywords between the three groups in addition to similarities which can be used to enhance support for search and browse. While tags and author keywords were found that matched descriptors exactly, other terms which did not match but provided important expansion to the indexing lexicon were found. These additional terms could be used to enhance support for searching and browsing in article databases as well as to provide invaluable data for entry vocabulary and emergent terminology for regular updates to indexing systems. Additionally, the study suggests that tags support organisation by association to task, projects and subject while making important connections to traditional systems which classify into subject categories
Perspectiva filosófica de Giorgio Agamben a respeito da noção de recordação em Walter Benjamin
Resumo: A finalidade deste artigo é colocar os termos de uma problemática da transmissibilidade, relacionada à categoria da imagem, no interior da filosofia de Walter Benjamin a partir da perspectiva filosófica de Giorgio Agamben. Para o autor só é possível fugir das armadilhas da instrumentalização representacional da história – tarefa esta proposta por Benjamin – a partir de uma verdadeira apreensão do passado – o que consiste, teoricamente, em convergir filosofia, ética e poesia. A categoria chave para pôr em vigor os termos de um potenciamento do passado é a recordação, concepção que opera as noções de potência e facticidade no interior da experiência histórica.Palavras-chave: recordação; Walter Benjamin; Giorgio Agamben; imagem.Abstract: The purpose of this article it is to put the terms of a problematic of transmissibility, related to the category of image, within the philosophy of Walter Benjamin from the philosophical perspective of Giorgio Agamben. To the author, it is only possible to escape from the traps of representational instrumentalisation of history - the task proposed by Benjamin - from a real apprehension of the past - which theoretically consists in converging philosophy, ethics and poetry. Benjamin Capps and the Sacajawea Plagiarism Case
The investigation concerns a 1982 suit brought by Texas novelist Benjamin Capps and his publishers against the author and publisher of an historical novel, Sacajawea, alleging that the book contained approximately 145 instances of copyright infringement. Parallel-column exhibits of passages from the novel by Anna Lee Waldo and from Capps's writings illustrate the evidence submitted in court. The publishing history of the novel, brought out by Avon Books, is related, as well as the story of readers' discoveries of suspicious material and the ultimate litigation. A comparison is made of the original novel and a revised edition published in 1984. Uniform well-posedness and inviscid limit for the Benjamin–Ono–Burgers equation
AbstractWe prove that the Cauchy problem for the Benjamin–Ono–Burgers equation∂tu−ε∂x2u+H∂x2u+uux=0,u(x,0)=u0(x) is uniformly globally well-posed in Hs (s⩾1) for all ε∈[0,1]. Moreover, we show that as ε→0 the solution converges to that of Benjamin–Ono equation in C([0,T]:Hs) (s⩾1) for any T>0. Our results give an alternative proof for the global well-posedness of the BO equation in H1(R) without using gauge transform, which was first obtained by Tao (2004) [23], and also solve the problem addressed in Tao (2004) [23] about the inviscid limit behavior in H1
Stratospheric geoengineering with black carbon aerosols
I use a general circulation model of Earth's climate to simulate stratospheric geoengineering with black carbon aerosols, varying the altitude of injection, initial particle size, and whether the deposited black carbon modifies ground albedo. 1 Tg of black carbon aerosols injected into the stratosphere each year will cause significant enough surface cooling to negate anthropogenic warming if the aerosols are small (r=0.03 μm) or if the aerosols are injected into the middle stratosphere, although using small aerosols causes large regional cooling effects that would be catastrophic to agriculture. The aerosols cause significant stratospheric heating, resulting in stratospheric ozone destruction and circulation changes, most notably an increase in the Northern Hemisphere polar jet, which forms an Arctic ozone hole and forces a positive mode of the Arctic Oscillation. The hydrologic cycle is perturbed, specifically the summer monsoon system of India, Africa, and East Asia, resulting in monsoon precipitation collapse. Global primary productivity is decreased by 35.5% for the small particle case. Surface cooling causes some sea ice regrowth, but not at statistically significant levels. All of these climate impacts are exacerbated for small particle geoengineering, with high altitude geoengineering with the default particle size (r=0.08 μm) causing a reasonable amount of cooling, and large particle (r=0.15 μm) geoengineering or particle injection into the lower stratosphere causing few of these effects. The modification of ground albedo by the soot particles slightly perturbs the radiative budget but does not cause any distinguishable climate effects. The cheapest means we investigated for placing 1 Tg of black carbon aerosols into the stratosphere by diesel fuel combustion would cost 541 billion annual, or 2.0% and 0.8% of GDP, respectively. The additional carbon dioxide released from combusting diesel to produce these aerosols is about 1% of current emissions, but the additional NOx would be 17% of current sources and could further reduce the total ozone column by up to 10%. Geoengineering with carbon black, if technically feasible, would be much cheaper, costing approximately 1.3 billion annually, with few troublesome emissions factors.Ph.D.Includes bibliographical referencesIncludes vitaby Benjamin S. Criticality of Regular Formulas
We define the criticality of a boolean function f : {0,1}^n -> {0,1} as the minimum real number lambda >= 1 such that Pr [DT_{depth}(f|R_p) >= t] = k.
In an unpublished manuscript [Rossmann, 2018], the author showed that a combination of Håstad’s switching and multi-switching lemmas [Håstad, 1986; Håstad, 2014] implies that AC^0 circuits of depth d+1 and size s have criticality at most O(log s)^d. In the present paper, we establish a stronger O(1/d log s)^d bound for regular formulas: the class of AC^0 formulas in which all gates at any given depth have the same fan-in. This result is based on
(i) a novel switching lemma for bounded size (unbounded width) DNF formulas, and
(ii) an extension of (i) which analyzes a canonical decision tree associated with an entire depth-d formula.
As corollaries of our criticality bound, we obtain an improved #SAT algorithm and tight Linial-Mansour-Nisan Theorem for regular formulas, strengthening previous results for AC^0 circuits due to Impagliazzo, Matthews, Paturi [Impagliazzo et al., 2012] and Tal [Tal, 2017]. As a further corollary, we increase from o(log n /(log log n)) to o(log n) the number of quantifier alternations for which the QBF-SAT (quantified boolean formula satisfiability) algorithm of Santhanam and Williams [Santhanam and Williams, 2014] beats exhaustive search
