A STUDY OF "AUTUMN SORROW" BY FUKUNAGA TAKEHIKO

No full text
pdfAutumn Sorrow (aki no nageki) is a short story by Fukunaga Takehiko, first published in the literary magazine "Meiso" in November, 1954. One of many experimental works by Fukunaga, who is regarded primarily as an avant-garde writer, this story is highly complex in both language and design. The reader is drawn into the solitary world of the heroine Sanae, whose brother died by his own hand one autumn night ten years earlier. In his depiction of her lonely existence, Fukunaga resolutely confronts "time"― here portrayed as a phenomenon of evil -and analyses in detail the interaction between time and fiction. In this paper I would like to consider the relation in the story between the structure of time and the development of the narrative. In Autumn Sorrow, the author consciously denies the continuity of time by overlapping and intertwining past and present within the story, thus advocating to the reader a restructuring of time guided by the creation and judgement of reader and author. Fukunaga constantly shifts time from the present to the past in successive sentences, or even within a single sentence. I would like to examine the ways in which Fukunaga deals with these timeshifts. Autumn Sorrow develops the theme of combining the chronological time of the story itself with the psychological time of the heroine, Sanae. I would like to examine the function of time and memory within the structure of the story. Fukunaga sees creative co-operation between reader and author as the ideal component for construction of a story. To draw the reader completely into the world of the story, he has created not just an artificial time structure, but a story in which he measures the distance between the author, the characters, and the reader. In Autumn Sorrow, direct and indirect narratives are skillfully mixed, with dialogue expressed on the same level as the prose, removing the borders between the real world and the inner world of the characters, aiming at a single level for reader, characters, and author. The principal motifs of the story are war, and the heredity of madness. The construction of the story, involving as it does the setting and solving of various puzzles, leaves the story open to numerous, many-sided interpretations.conference pape

Effects of carriers on transgene expression from plasmids containing a DNA sequence with high histone affinity

The intranuclear disposition of plasmid DNA is highly important for transgene expression. The effects of a left-handedly curved sequence with high histone affinity on transgene expression were examined in COS-7 cells with two kinds of carriers (Lipofectamine Plus and TransIT-LT1). Three plasmids containing the curved sequence at different positions were transfected. The transgene expression was affected by the position of the left-handedly curved sequence, and the sequence at appropriate locations enhanced the expression from plasmid DNAs. However, the position effects on the expression differed from those obtained by electroporation of the same plasmid DNAs in a naked form. In addition, the degree of expression enhancement seemed to depend on the carriers. These results suggest that the left-handedly curved sequence with high histone affinity could increase the transgene expression from a plasmid delivered with carriers

Boundary integral equation approach based on a polynomial expansion of the current distribution to reconstruct the current density profile in tokamak plasmas

A new approach has been proposed to reconstruct the current density profile in tokamak plasmas. The boundary-only integral equation derived from the Grad–Shafranov equation, under the assumption of polynomial expansion of current density, will have no unknowns except for the polynomial expansion coefficients, once the magnetic flux and its derivative have been given along the plasma boundary with the aid of Kurihara's Cauchy-condition surface method based on magnetic sensor data. In addition to the discretized form of the equation, some constraints are taken into account: the total plasma current, zero-current along the plasma boundary and a scalar relationship derived from the MHD equilibrium to relate the current density to the magnetic flux. It is also assumed that the poloidal field, as a quantity closely related to the current density, can be measured at a certain number of points inside the plasma. The whole set of linear equations is solved using the singular value decomposition technique to determine the polynomial expansion coefficients. The validity of the present technique and the quality of the current density solution have been investigated through test calculations for some plasma configurations

The location of the left-handedly curved DNA sequence affects exogenous DNA expression in vivo

The intranuclear disposition of a plasmid is extremely important for transgene expression. The effects of a left-handedly curved sequence with high histone affinity on plasmid expression were examined in vivo. A naked luciferase-plasmid was delivered into mouse liver by a hydrodynamics-based injection, and the luciferase activities were quantitated at various time points. The location of the left-handedly curved sequence determined the transgene expression, without affecting the amount of intranuclear exogenous DNA. The plasmid containing the curved sequence at the location that results in the exposure of the TATA box out of the nucleosome core showed the highest expression. These results suggest that sequences with high histone affinity could control transgene expression from plasmids in vivo

Hsi K'ang 嵆康 and Buddhism : Hsi K'ang in the History of Thought of the Six Dynasties

No full text
In the present article the author tries to interpret the thought of Hsi K'ang in the light of a new historical approach, including the history of Chinese Buddhism, and to evaluate his thought in the context of the history of Buddhism and that of thought at large in the Six Dynasties. With this in view the author analyzes the impact of Buddhism on Hsi K'ang on the one hand and his influence on Chinese Buddhism on the other. With regard to the first point the author makes close examination of Hsi K'ang's life so far as it relates to Buddhism, while as to the second Hsi K'ang's Taoistic philosophy--realization of eternal life--is explored in order to ascertain what role Hsi K'ang played in the Six Dynasties in introducing and developing Buddhism

Charlotte Brontë's Jane Eyre, from Novel to Film : The Adaptations of R. Stevenson and C.J. Fukunaga

To address the issue of adaptation of Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë from the aftermath of World War II to our present day, I have chosen to delve into the study of the novel through Penny Boumelha’s lens and to contrast it with two adaptations: one directed by R. Stevenson in 1944 and the other one directed by C.J. Fukunaga in 2011.As defined by Penny Boumelha, the genius of Jane Eyre resides in the use of plots made by its author. Charlotte Brontë redefined the use of plots by intertwining them throughout her novel. Hence, there is evidence of the coexistence of the plots of romance, bildungsroman, and desire. Yet, the biases inflicted upon women and the spheres and behaviours they were supposed to embrace, resurfaces in R. Stevenson’s adaptation, demonstrating that an adaptation is always a work of subjectivity. While Fukunaga’s adaptation keeps the essence of Jane Eyre, its director nonetheless made choices of his own to fit his own agenda. Thus, this Master dissertation aims to emphasise the choices made when creating a novel and those made when adapting it to another medium.
