The rise and fall of the Labour league of youth

    No full text
This thesis charts the rise and fall of the Labour Party’s first and most enduring youth organisation, the Labour League of Youth. The history of the League, from its birth in the early nineteen twenties to its demise in the late nineteen fifties, is placed in the context of the Labour Party’s subsequent fruitless attempts to establish and maintain a vibrant and functional youth organisation. A narrative is incorporated that illuminates the culture, organisation and political activism of the League and establishes it as a predominantly working class radical organisation. The reluctance on the part of the Labour Party to grant autonomy to its youth sections resulted in the history of the League of Youth being one of control, suppression and tension. This state of affairs ensured that subsequent youth groups, the Young Socialists and Young Labour, would be established in an atmosphere of reservation and scepticism. The thesis places the prime responsibility for the failure of the party’s youth organisations with the party leadership but also considers the contributory factors of changing social and political circumstances. A number of themes are explored which include the impact of structure and agency factors, the power of the Parliamentary Labour Party, the political socialisation of leading figures within the party, the social context in which each of the groups emerged and the extent to which the youth groups were prey to intra-party factionalism. The thesis redresses the balance of research where most accounts have focussed on the Young Socialists and traces the common characteristics that are prevalent in the way the party leadership has approached its relationship with its youth organisations. Use has been made of previously unpublished primary source material, the major source being the League of Youth members themselves whose recollections have helped to demonstrate the arguments put forward in this thesis

Température minimale au niveau du sol

    No full text
The author studies the relationship between the minimum temperatures recorded in a standard meteorological shelter and the corresponding minimum temperature near the ground surface for 18 stations in Québec from May to November, 1965 and 1966.Since there is an excellent correlation (0.96) between the two series of temperatures for a given site, only a limited number of measurements need be taken near the surface, in order to obtain information which is statistically significant ; however, care must be taken, since the mean deviations vary greatly from site to site, as is shown by the table of detailed results for the 18 stations studied

Enhanced electrical and optical properties of room temperature deposited Aluminium doped Zinc Oxide (AZO) thin films by excimer laser annealing

    No full text
High quality transparent conductive oxides (TCOs) often require a high thermal budget fabrication process. In this study, Excimer Laser Annealing (ELA) at a wavelength of 248 nm has been explored as a processing mechanism to facilitate low thermal budget fabrication of high quality aluminium doped zinc oxide (AZO) thin films. 180 nm thick AZO films were prepared by radio frequency magnetron sputtering at room temperature on fused silica substrates. The effects of the applied RF power and the sputtering pressure on the outcome of ELA at different laser energy densities and number of pulses have been investigated. AZO films deposited with no intentional heating at 180 W, and at 2 mTorr of 0.2% oxygen in argon were selected as the optimum as-deposited films in this work, with a resistivity of 1×10−3 Ω.cm, and an average visible transmission of 85%. ELA was found to result in noticeably reduced resistivity of 5×10−4 Ω.cm, and enhancing the average visible transmission to 90% when AZO is processed with 5 pulses at 125 mJ/cm2. Therefore, the combination of RF magnetron sputtering and ELA, both low thermal budget and scalable techniques, can provide a viable fabrication route of high quality AZO films for use as transparent electrodes

Synthesis and characterisation of nanostructured BiFeO3 for photodecolourisation of azo dyes using visible light

    No full text
In this work, effort is being made to synthesize a narrow band gap ferroelectric perovskite nanostructure semiconductor that is BiFeO3 (BFO). The BFO nanopowders were synthesized at 650ºC using a self-combustion method with glycine as the fuel. The effect of the different fuel concentrations, annealing temperatures and the duration of annealing are all demonstrated to influence the phase and crystallography of the synthesized nanoparticles. The author has demonstrated that the self-combustion process can be used to produce high purity BFO nanopowders which exhibit good absorption in the visible-light regime as determined by the UV-Vis-NIR spectroscopy with a measured optical band gap of 2.22 eV. Black Literature in South Africa 1900-1950

    No full text
African Studies Seminar series. Paper presented October, 1974. Not to be used without the Author's permissionThe magazine Drum began in March, 1951, and it has become deservedly famous since: partly for the ethos it created, partly for the writers that it fostered - writers such as Nat Nakasa, Can Themba, Casey Motsisi, Ezekiel Mphahlele et. al. But the image some critics create, and the image which seems to inhere in the popular mind (whatever that may be) is that black writing in South Africa up till 1951 consisted only of the odd and isolated literary event.... In this paper I have three main aims: 1. To show the continuous tradition of writing in English by blacks between 1900 and the 1950's (even this is artificially to exclude the large amount of vernacular writing during this period. It is an artificial exclusion but to include vernacular writing, I believe, could only strengthen the argument of this paper). To show the links, almost inseparable connections, between literature, journalism and politics - all three areas being aspects of the continuous "secondary resistance." Partly my aim here is to indicate that there are no sudden "peaks" or outcrops of literature, that the imaginative works arise naturally out of a continuous debate which has frequent simultaneous expression in other media. The "uniqueness" of literary works must therefore be seen in the light of the fact that their central issues are being discussed contemporaneously in other media. In other words these works are not so "unique", not peculiar phenomena or outcrops: literary productions between 1900 and 1950 are not so isolated. The history of black writing in the Nineteenth Century is largely outside the scope of this paper: Professor Albert S Gerard's book Four African Literatures (University of California Press, 1971) gives a detailed account of this period. Suffice it to say that black journalism began in Southern Africa in July, 1837, and was later to make famous the names of Tujo Soga and John Tengo Jabavu. So that by 1900 there was a fairly strong tradition of journalism. The years 1928 to 1930 saw the publication of three of the more well-known works of the period under consideration. These were Sol Plaatje's novel Mhudi, John Dube's Zulu novel Insila kg Shako (translated into English in 1951) and R.R.R. Dhlomo's An African Tragedy. The lives of the first two of these writers form a kind of model for the rest of the paper

Desafíos: El teatro itinerante del Sol

    No full text
Since the beginning of the 1980s, the Travelling Theater of the Sun has become one of the benchmarks of Colombian theater. It is not only a standard troupe that carries out stage shows, but a life experience "company" in which performers and spectators are immersed in a communion, where the search for the essential roots of the indigenous cultures of Latin America is combined with the best traditions of theater, both Eastern and Western.
