Promoting a student-centered environment in an EFL classroom in Azogues through CLT principles.
The need for a student-centered atmosphere in English teaching is addressed in this study based on observations made during our practicum. In order to investigate this, activities for communicative language teaching (CLT) that were founded on their principles were put into practice in order to ascertain their role in fostering such an atmosphere. The purpose of the study was to determine how much CLT activities contribute to a student-centered environment in EFL classes. The study utilized the qualitative method in action research, collecting data through observation checklists, a questionnaire, and reflective notes. Students in the eighth grade, ages 12 to 13, from a rural school in Azogues, Ecuador, were among the participants. The results showed that students felt at ease and involved during CLT activities, responding well to them. It was discovered that the Running Dictation and Mingle activities were wildly successful in fostering a student-centered environment. The findings imply that CLT activities promote a dynamic, student-centered environment that supports meaningful learning.Azogue
The present research explores artistic mediation through theater in the teaching of English as a foreign language, with a proposal for an innovative strategy to improve communication skills, encourage creativity and promote cooperative interaction among students. The methodology is consistent with a qualitative approach and an exploratory-descriptive design. Techniques such as participant observation, interviews, photographic and documentary records were used to collect, analyze and present information about the school situation of eighth-year E.G.B. students, with ages between 12 and 13 years, in relation to their knowledge of Cultural and Artistic Education (ECA) and English. The focus group was the main data collection instrument, composed of five teachers: three specialized in English and two in arts. The information gathered from their experiences and points of view was instrumental in designing nine workshops specifically focused on harnessing students' interest in the arts and using theater as a tool to teach English more effectively and fun. From the application of the focus group, the proposal of theater mediation for teaching the English language was significant, since it can significantly improve communication skills, as well as creativity and ability to work cooperatively. Furthermore, implementing artistic strategies in the classroom provides a more motivating and engaged approach to language learning, thus increasing student motivation and engagement. In summary, this study highlights the importance of exploring innovative pedagogical approaches that combine arts and language teaching to enrich students' educational experience. Azogue
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
Construcción colectiva del conocimiento en escenarios virtuales: Una experiencia con estudiantes universitarios: Collective Knowledge Building in Virtual Settings: An Experience with University Students
In pedagogical practice, the didactic process is generally developed in three important stages: presentation, practice, and production. The object of this research is focused on the students’ collective knowledge building in virtual settings. Therefore, to carry out this study, five strategies based on cooperative learning were selected. The aim of this research is to analyze the possibilities these strategies offer to generate knowledge in collaborative, dynamic, and participatory ways, seeking the development of cognitive and socio-affective skills. The research approach was qualitative with an interpretive perspective. Thus, the main method was action research which was utilized from the diagnosis, design, and application of an action plan to its evaluation. The main results demonstrate that the following strategies: “gallery of authors, research groups and joining heads” are applied in building knowledge in the practice stage; while, “searching for cases and weekly sharing content” are utilized in consolidating knowledge in the production stage. All of the strategies mentioned previously have allowed the development of cognitive and socio-affective skills in university students. The cognitive skills include critical thinking, verbal reasoning, and mastery of content; and the socio-affective skills involve active listening and consensus.
This research aims to present the meanings and interpretations of the oral accounts and written testimonies of the future teachers of the Pedagogy of National and Foreign Languages (PINE) career, presenting the student portfolio as a tool that enhances shared learning, from the experiences of teachers in training in the period May-September 2020. In the methodological aspect, the qualitative paradigm and the hermeneutic method were used, for this a semi-structured interview and content analysis were applied. The instruments applied were the interview guide and the student portfolio respectively; same that were analyzed from the following categories: activities that promote the axiological dimension, activities that stimulate reflection and activities that promote the role of the student. The main conclusion of this investigative process is that the portfolio is conceived as a didactic tool for shared and permanent learning; For its effectiveness, a look with a proactive perspective of the teacher and axiological of the student is required, in such a way that the teacher in training is enriched as a student and is didactically nurtured as a future teacher-researcher.
