Postgenomics: Perspectives on Biology after the Genome, by Sarah Richardson, Hallam Stevens
n the decade following the controversy surrounding the completion of the Human Genome Project, genomics realized neither the promises of personalized genetic medicine nor the fears of a genetic brave new world. Instead, as Sarah Richardson and Hallam Stevens suggest in their introduction to this fine collection of essays, we have arrived at the beginning of a “postgenomic” era in biology and medicine. An ironic consequence of the intense study of genes has been the revelation that most of the human genome (99 percent by some estimates) does not “code” for any identifiable human traits. John Dupré reflects in his contribution that the relationship between genotype and phenotype has become even more fragmented the further it has been studied by genomics researchers. How are we to make sense, for example, of the substantial genomic variation among different kinds of tissues in the same body? The state of the art in genomics seems to have arrived where many science scholars started in the 1990s—profoundly skeptical of just what the study of genes can tell us. The rich contributions to this volume suggest the topography of this new postgenomic era for historians, social scientists, and philosophers
The fresco decoration by Felix Anton Scheffler in the church St. George and St. Martin in Martínkovice
This bachelor thesis focuses on the fresco decoration in the Church of St. George and St. Martin in Martínkovice, which was created by Felix Anton Scheffler in 1748. Firstly, the thesis deals with history and typology of the church, followed by the description of works by the architect Martin Allio. The greatest part of the thesis is devoted to the painter Felix Anton Scheffler and his works reaching from Silesia to Bohemia. The author mentions Felix Anton Scheffler´s teachers - Cosmas Damian Asam and Johann Christoph Grooth. The main part of the thesis is focused on frescos which are subject to an iconographic and formal analysis and also focuses on restoration work. Scheffler´s works are put into the context of baroque paintings in Bohemia. The last part concentrates on searching patterns that are used in the fresco in the Church of St. George and St. Martin in Martínkovice. The author compares frescos from Martínkovice with Asam´s other works from the period between 1720 and 1725
Tradurre la letteratura per l'infanzia: proposta di traduzione di Flip Flap Safari di Axel Scheffler
This thesis is a proposed translation of the picture book Flip Flap Safari, written by the German author Axel Scheffler and published in 2014. The translation is presented along with an analysis and a commentary in which I analyse and examine the main translation problems of this kind of literature. and I explain the reasons behind my solutions.
The translation of a picture book is a creative challenge because it requires translator to use their linguistic and cultural skills together with their imagination and to evaluate the phonetic dimension of the source text and reproduce in the target language.
In the first part of my thesis I will introduce an overview of children’s literature in Italy and I will then focus on Flip Flap Safari, analysing the text and providing biographical information about its author-illustrator Axel Scheffler. In the second part of my thesis I will present my translation of the book, which will be followed by a reflection about the main problems I had to face during the translation process
The Dynamism of Health Law: Expanded Insurance Coverage as the Engine of Regulatory Reform
Author(s): Scheffler, Gabriel | Abstract: Can law improve the delivery of health care? The predominant view is that law serves as a barrier to reforming the health care delivery system. Health law scholars of all stripes blame regulations for impeding innovation, limiting competition, and exacerbating fragmentation in health care. I argue that this view neglects an important—but overlooked—feature of health law: the dynamic relationship between laws that expand health insurance coverage and laws that regulate the delivery of health care. By expanding health insurance coverage and increasing the demand for health care, laws such as Medicare, Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act catalyze policymakers to experiment with reforms to delivery system regulations over time. I chart the evolution of three key areas of delivery system law, and find that insurance expansions have contributed to dramatic changes in each of these areas. Recognizing health law’s “dynamism” sheds light on two debates that are central to health care reform. First, contrary to what some scholars have argued, it reveals that expanding health insurance coverage should be viewed as a catalyst for delivery system reform, rather than being in competition with it. Second, it strengthens the case for further expanding health insurance coverage. I argue that a dynamic regulatory system is better able to address problems of access, costs, and quality; to adapt to other changes in the underlying health care system; and to facilitate policy learning
Humour and the locus of control in The Gruffalo (Julia Donaldson & Axel Scheffler)
The purpose of this article is firstly to distinguish between the notions “external locus of control” and “internal locus of control”, secondly to indicate ways in which the locus of control in humour in “The Gruffalo” by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler can be identified and thirdly to indicate possible ways in which emphasis on the internal locus of control in the young reader can assist him/her in the development of a general mental/- psychological well-being.
Different kinds of literary humour contribute to the ways in which young listeners/readers can identify with stories, poems, dramas and films. The young listener/reader can recognise him/herself in humorous situations, in the humorous use of imagery, wordplay and illustrations/visuals. He/she can also identify with or distance him-/herself from or reject the characters, the values represented and the author who created the text.
When in interaction with the works of authors who use negative as well as positive kinds of humour to point out the dos and don’ts, the rights and the wrongs in life, the horizon of a young listener’s/reader’s experience can be expanded. Such a reading would contribute to the development of the young reader’s cognitive, emotional, social and moral values as it links up with an unconscious or conscious decision about the locus of control in his/her life

Immigrant/Learner, Affiliate, Author, Expert: The Intersections of L2 Writing, Identity, and Computer-Mediated Communication
As technology continues to shape our interactions in both personal and educational contexts, the exploration of how computer-mediated communication (CMC) may impact the development of second language writing skills has received greater interest. While a growing body of research has investigated potential applications of this technology within second language (L2) classrooms, the voluntary writing practices of L2 writers—where and what they choose to write outside of academic domains—are relatively uncharted as yet. This review of the literature seeks to identify the many CMC contexts in which L2 writers situate themselves, their purposes for engaging these online audiences, and the social roles or identities that emerge through their chosen writing activities. Previous studies indicate that social media platforms and other online communities indeed promote learners’ experimentation with identity, group membership, and language with apparent gains in writer confidence and motivation; however, establishing a clear link between CMC and literacy development, as well as determining how computer-based writing can be meaningfully integrated into academic settings, remain directions for future research

Synthèse de bâtonnets inorganiques piédzoélectriques et mise en forme de fibres composites piézoélectriques
Piezoelectric conversion of mechanical vibrations into electrical energy is a promising approach to power embedded electronics and to develop new sensing technologies. Conventional piezoelectric materials are usually under the form of thin films or brittle crystals. Having piezoelectric materials under the form of flexible fibers would allow their implementation in smart textiles and new functional structures. Inorganic fibers have remarkable piezoelectric properties but are highly brittle. Organic polymer fibers are flexible but do not yet compete with inorganic materials in terms of piezoelectric efficiency. In this work, we combine the efficiency of piezoelectric inorganic materials, as inclusions, and the flexibility of poly(vinyl alcohol), as the matrix. Fiber composites are made by a conventional and scalable wet-spinning process. The piezoelectric and mechanical properties of composite films and fibers are compared. The composites are loaded with BaTi01 particles, doped ZnO or NaNb01 nanowires. The anisotropie shape of ZnO and NaNb01 is used to promote the mechanical stress transfer from the polymer matrix to the piezoelectric particles. The hydrothermal syntheses of doped ZnO with lanthanum or vanadium and NaNb01 are detailed. The effect of gallic acid and dopamine coatings onto the particles on the electromechanical properties are also presented.
