Extraction Technique For Lipid From Microalgae For Biodiesel

    No full text
A study on the technique of lipid extraction from microalgae for the biodiesel production is performed, in which the author has narrowed down the research to the microalgae cultivation method, harvesting technique, lipid extraction of microalgae and also transesterification. At the early stage of the research, the author has batchcultivated the Nannochloropsis sp and Chlorella sp to conduct the growth evaluation by using the cell count method. The microalgae are then harvested by centrifugal separation. The project work continued with the sample collection of the mixedculture of microalgae from the pond for the extraction of lipid. For this project, the author has selected the solvent extraction method continued with the rotary evaporator to extract the lipid from microalgae. The solvent systems used for the extraction are n-hexane, methanol and the mixture of chloroform/methanol. The result from the extraction has shown that methanol is the best solvent to extract lipid from the mixed-culture of microalgae. The selection of this technique is made based on the ease of application and low cost consumption. Transesterification is also performed in order to convert the oil which is in the form of lipid to methyl ester. The alkali catalyzed process is applied in transeterification which is by using sodium hydroxide. Lastly, the pH measurement of the esterified product is conducted and analysis by using Thin Layer Chromatography is performed

Hard clams constitute the genus Meretrix is one of the most demanded bivalvia species in Malaysia. However, the unknown level of heavy metal content raises concerns for the health of seafood lovers, particularly those who consume seafood from Pantai Sepat, Kuantan, Pahang. Using bivalves as bio-indicators, the objectives of this study are to determine the level of concentration of Copper (Cu), Zinc (Zn), Cadmium (Cd) and Lead (Pb), and to evaluate these concentrations according to the permissible limits established by the Malaysia Food Act (1983) and Food Regulations (1985) and the World Health Organisation (1982). Before analysing the samples with Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectroscopy (ICP-OES), the collected and desiccated samples were digested with acid. The concentrations of copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), cadmium (Cd), and lead (Pb) were determined to be 0.56 ppm, 6.76 ppm, 0.06 ppm, and 0.04 ppm, respectively. The order of metals in the collected Meretrix spp. is Zn> Cu> Cd> Pb. The concentrations of all elements present in the hard clams were assessed and found to fall within acceptable thresholds, indicating that they are suitable for consumption without posing any health risks

Causal links in QOL sub-domains accentuate greater support for physical and emotional well-being of breast cancer survivors

    No full text
Group psychotherapy or support group (SG) interventions have been reported to improve the quality of life (QOL) of cancer patients. For an improved life of Malaysian breast cancer survivors, facilities for SG interventions have been set up both in the urban and rural areas of the country. However, the impact of support group participation on QOL of these patients, and factors that may influence it have remained elusive. This study, examines the impact of SG participation on the QOL of Malaysian breast cancer survivors using the Functional Assessment of Chronic Illness Therapy (FACIT) questionnaire. Multiple comparisons using the Tukey HSD show that the QOL measure for rural SG participants are significantly lower (F(2,55) = 14.570; p < 0.01) than for urban SG participants. Analysis of the interrelationships between the QOL sub-domains indicated that functional wellbeing (FWB) fully mediates the effects of physical wellbeing (PWB) and emotional wellbeing (EWB) on social wellbeing (SWB). In addition, PWB was relatively more influential than EWB in determining patients’ FWB and SWB while PWB, EWB and FWB collectively explained about 25% of the variability in SWB. Findings of this study thus indicate that measurement of QOL is relative to patients’ location i.e., urban or rural, which in turn reflects the patients’ education and financial background

“Expunge Virtually All Use of the Passive Voice”: How Does Style Guideline Affect Passive Voice Occurrences in Research Articles?

    No full text
Background: The prevalence and impact of passive voice (PV) structures in research articles have garnered attention, particularly within the context of academic publishing guidelines. Some journals’ writing style guideline, for example, explicitly advises authors to eliminate passive voice instances from their manuscripts, prompting an examination of the extent to which this guideline influences authors' choices in different journal contexts. Purpose: This study aimed at comparing the frequency of passive voice (PV) structures used in research articles published by journals originating in Indonesia (henceforth, JOI) to those in research articles published by journals originating in English-speaking countries (henceforth, JOE). Method: Data were gathered from respected journals in Indonesia and the United Kingdom, both renowned for their excellence in language education and applied linguistics. After reviewing relevant literature and considering journal origins and author affiliations, we selected 34 articles (17 from each group) out of 66. We focused our analysis on the 'Introduction' and 'Method' sections, as these sections typically contain active voice in the former and passive voice in the latter. Other sections and peripheral elements were excluded. The analysis involved exporting PDFs to text files to count words and passive voice occurrences. We utilized a passive voice detector tool and manual analysis for accuracy. A t-test was conducted to compare the frequency of passive voice between the two journals. Results: The results indicated three main findings with respect to the research questions: 1) PVs in JOI occurred more frequently in the ‘Method’ than in the ‘Introduction’ section, 2) similarly, PVs in JOE occurred more frequently in the ‘Method’ than in the ‘Introduction’ section, 3) JOI comprised fewer sentences than JOE but the frequency of PVs in JOI was significantly higher than that in JOE. Conclusion: We inferred that the current guidelines seemingly affected the authors' choices of using PV. We also provided some suggestions on how to use AV and PV appropriately in the manuscript

Writing scientific papers is considered an important skill to be mastered by students. This relates to the writing of scientific papers as part of the tridharma of higher education. On the other hand, writing scientific papers can stimulate the growth of critical, analytical, and new ideas. However, many students complain that they lack ideas and can't find anything interesting to write about. In fact, many of them have to extend their study period because they have not finished their thesis. This is all constrained by the low ability of writing scientific papers among students. Therefore, the community service that the author does is training in writing skills (writing skills) in writing scientific papers at the Riring-Rumasalah Ambonese Student Association (PRRA). This training is carried out with a classical training pattern and focus group discussions in small groups. What drives public perceptions of e-cigarettes? A mixed-methods study exploring reasons behind adults' perceptions of e-cigarettes in Northern England.

    No full text
BACKGROUND Despite growing evidence that e-cigarettes are likely less harmful than cigarettes, perceptions of equal or more harm have increased worldwide. This study aimed to identify the most common reasons behind adults' perceptions of the (i) relative harm of e-cigarettes compared with cigarettes and (ii) effectiveness of e-cigarettes for smoking cessation. METHODS Adults (N = 1646) from Northern England were recruited through online panels from December-March 2017/2018, using quota sampling to guarantee socio-demographic representativeness. Qualitative content analysis of open-ended responses was performed with codes representing reasons for a given perception about e-cigarettes. Percentages of participants who gave each reason for each perception were calculated. RESULTS 823 (49.9%) participants agreed that e-cigarettes were less harmful than cigarettes, 283 (17.1%) disagreed, and 540 (32.8%) were undecided. The most common reasons for agreeing that e-cigarettes were less harmful than cigarettes were that they produce no smoke (29.8%) and fewer toxins (28.9%). Those who disagreed were most concerned about a perceived lack of trustworthy research (23.7%) and safety issues (20.8%). Lacking knowledge (50.4%) was the most common reason for being undecided. 815 (49.5%) of participants agreed that e-cigarettes were an effective smoking cessation aid, 216 (13.2%) disagreed, and 615 (37.4%) were undecided. The most common reasons participants gave for agreeing were related to e-cigarettes being successful smoking replacements (50.3%) and advice from family, friends or health professionals (20.0%). Respondents who disagreed were most concerned about e-cigarettes being addictive (34.3%) and containing nicotine (15.3%). Lacking knowledge (45.2%) was the most common reason for being undecided. CONCLUSIONS Negative perceptions of e-cigarette harm were driven by concerns about a perceived lack of research and safety issues. Adults who viewed e-cigarettes as ineffective for smoking cessation feared that they perpetuate nicotine addiction. Campaigns and guidelines that address these concerns may help promote informed perceptions
