Inferring effective field observables from a discrete model
Aspin system on a lattice can usually be modeled at large scales by an effective quantum field theory. A key mathematical result relating the two descriptions is the quantum central limit theorem, which shows that certain spin observables satisfy an algebra of bosonic fields under certain conditions. Here, we show that these particular observables and conditions are the relevant ones for an observer with certain limited abilities to resolve spatial locations as well as spin values. This is shown by computing the asymptotic behaviour of a quantum Fisher information metric as function of the resolution parameters. The relevant observables characterise the state perturbations whose distinguishability does not decay too fast as a function of spatial or spin resolution. The author is grateful to Tobias Osborne for discussions leading to this work. Science, Body, Anatomy
This programme of artists’ films invites us to reflect on the interplay of anatomy and cinema
Following from Tate Modern’s 2022 Counter Encounters series titled Several Encounters over Plants, Science, Body, Anatomy explores the intersection of film and medical technology. Curated with Sonia Epstein, from the Museum of the Moving Image, New York, the second day of our programme includes two short films by Ana Mendieta and Jyoti Mistry, as well as the premiere of Sasha Litvintseva's and Beny Wagner's feature film, My Want of You Partakes of Me.
In My Want of You Partakes of Me, Sasha Litvintseva and Beny Wagner source snippets from different moments in history to narrate a fundamental change in perception. Through the feature, the filmmakers elucidate how the physical and perceptual boundaries of our bodies have never ceased to evolve. From the poet Dante Alighieri to a Chinese molecular biology lab, from the science fiction author Octavia Butler to the late nineteenth century French physiologist Claude Bernard, the duo of filmmakers weave a fragmented narrative exploring how self-recognition emerges from different historical models of the body
My Want of You Partakes of Me
Filmmakers Sasha Litvintseva and Beny Wagner are joined by author Elvia Wilk for a conversation about their oeuvre.
\ud
This conversation takes as its starting point Sasha Litvintseva and Beny Wagner's most recent film, My Want of You Partakes of Me. The film, which is on view as part of the exhibition at W139, is the third instalment of a trilogy. It proposes that digestion is a fundamental condition for organisms to be in the world, a process with physiological and psychological dimensions as well as spiritual and literary implications. Told through a nonlinear, multiperspectival narrative, the film presents a political poetics of incorporation. The filmmakers will engage in a close dialogue with author Elvia Wilk, who writes about corporeality, decomposition, and transformation through such diverse lenses as mediaeval mysticism, horror, and science fiction. Wilk, Litvintseva and Wagner share a deep interest in historical excavation as a means of engaging the present moment, and will expand on the many meeting points between their work across genres
Behind the Iron Curtain: The Surprising Soviet Influence on Western Justice
In the shadow of the Cold War, as the world watched two superpowers locked in ideological combat, an unexpected legal revolution was quietly unfolding. While politicians and generals strategized over potential battlefields, Soviet legal innovations were stealthily crossing borders, reshaping Western justice systems in ways that would have been unimaginable to many at the time. John Quigley's “Soviet Legal Innovation and the Law of the Western World” unveils this hidden narrative, challenging our understanding of the 20th-century legal evolution and forcing us to reconsider the complex legacy of Soviet jurisprudence in the modern Western legal landscape.
Published in 2007, “Soviet Legal Innovation and the Law of the Western World” by John Quigley offers an interesting examination of the often-underestimated influence of Soviet legal concepts on Western law. Professor Quigley, a law professor at Ohio State University, challenges the commonly held beliefs concerning the relationship between Western and Soviet legal systems throughout the 20th century. The book's central premise is that contrary to popular belief, certain Soviet legal innovations gradually infiltrated Western legal systems, effecting significant and unexpected transformations. Quigley extensively examines this influence across various legal domains, including labor law, family law, human rights, women’s rights, international law, criminal justice, and economic rights. By examining the secret narrative of legal cross-fertilization, the author encourages readers to reevaluate their understanding of the 20th-century legal development and the complex legacy of Soviet jurisprudence within the modern Western legal framework. This book challenges our ideas regarding the Cold War era and provides an insightful investigation of the surprising ways in which legal systems can influence one another across ideological divides.Published versio

Strengthening ADR System in Indonesia: Learning from ADR Practices in Hungary
Integrating Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) into legal systems is essential for improving access to justice, decreasing litigation expenses, and promoting enforced outcomes. This article examines the ADR practices in Hungary, a country that has successfully integrated ADR into its legal system, to gain significant insights for Indonesia, as both countries share the same sociocultural practices for communal dispute resolution. This normative legal research examines Hungary's extensive legal framework, the roles of institutional support structures, and the enforcement of ADR awards. The study employs comparative analysis that systematically evaluates pertinent legal documents, institutional reports, and scholarly literature from Hungary and Indonesia. The study found fundamental factors that contribute to the effectiveness of alternative dispute resolution (ADR) in Hungary including the existence of a clearly established legislative framework, sufficient institutional infrastructure, and effective regulation to enforce ADR decisions. Indonesia can adopt these techniques to improve its Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) system, resulting in more streamlined, cost-efficient, and fair processes for resolving disputes and to establish a more unified and efficient ADR system
LEGAL LOOPHOLES IN PYRAMID AND PONZI SCHEME REGULATIONS: A CAUTIONARY TALE FROM ALBANIA TO INDONESIA
This paper examines the legal loopholes and regulatory measures taken in response to pyramid and Ponzi schemes, specifically analyzing the lessons learned from Albania\u27s financial crisis in the 1990s and what insights Indonesia can learn. The collapse of these schemes in Albania, which had a catastrophic effect on the economy and triggered an entire social and political crisis, exposed significant measures in governance negligence, financial supervision, legal frameworks, and understanding of investments. Through an in-depth examination of the Albanian catastrophe experience, this paper examines the legal framework in terms of inadequate regulations, government negligence due to lack of experience handling Ponzi and pyramid scheme issues, and lack of investment literacy. The paper explores how Indonesia can enhance its legal and regulatory environment by drawing lessons from Albania\u27s mistakes in the past. Suggestions involve strengthening financial authority roles, establishing specific regulations to regulate pyramid and Ponzi schemes, and providing comprehensive investment literacy education for investors. This study highlights the significance of legislative reform and efficient governance to prevent financial schemes that take advantage of legal loopholes and uneducated investors, ultimately leading to a more resilient and stable financial system. By examining Albania\u27s experience, Indonesia may establish a proactive strategy to protect its citizens and economy from the dangers of pyramid and Ponzi schemes
