`Natural Justice' implies, rather than assures, equality for all before the law. Such fundamental inequality found, and continues to find, intense and tragic expression in high levels of incarceration and deaths in custody

‘Hidden, Not Forgotten: The 1980s WA Aboriginal Land Inquiry\u27

    No full text
Three years after the Kimberley Noonkanbah Dispute, and six years after introduction of the Aboriginal Land Rights (Northern Territory) Act in the NT, the Aboriginal Land Inquiry (ALI) was established by a newly elected WA State Labor Government in May 1983. Led by Paul Seaman QC, it was sometimes known as ‘The Seaman Inquiry’. The content of the Inquiry’s report based on two years state-wide consultation and research did not become legislation. Notably, the WA Aboriginal Land Inquiry took place nine years before the momentous 1992 High Court of Australia Mabo Decision and active implementation of the National Native Title Act in 1993/1994. This seminar will be introduced and guided by Professor Sandy Toussaint, who worked on the Aboriginal Land Inquiry in 1983-1984. Paying homage to those Aboriginal women and men who contributed to the continuing depth of material that emerged so long ago, emphases will include the how and why the ALI was established by the Labor State Government in the 1980s, its cultural and political processes, and the implications of the ALI\u27s final report and instructions to government. Possible comparisons with contemporary life and the 1993/1994 Federal Native Title Act will also be raised. Questions welcome during the seminar or online

Introduction. Toussaint en Italie, l’Italie chez Toussaint

    No full text
Italy is ubiquitous in Jean-Philippe Toussaint's work, since almost all his books have been translated, and some have even been retranslated. Among contemporary French-speaking authors, Toussaint is undoubtedly the one who has explored the Italian peninsula most extensively: his familiarity with the country's landscapes, culture, and even language is evident in every aspect of his multi-modal work (narratives, films, photography, art installations, performances). This special issue represents a step that will perhaps lead our author to explore Italy in a different way, constantly reinventing it and adding new facets to it

Des relatives de Toussaint. Une syntaxe du regard

    No full text
A man got onto the bus, who wore a broad hat’), which is often mentioned in French grammars. In La réticence (1991), a novel in French by the Belgian author Jean-Philippe Toussaint, over a hundred such relative clauses are found. An analysis of the variety of such clauses in the narration shows their relation with a deictic use of relatives (« je vois quelqu’un qui sort ») and perception verbs

International audienceAbstract The lexical analysis of Maurice Toussaint in the light of the "theory of salience": additional proposals Maurice Toussaint constructed a theory of analysis of the sign based on the rationalisation of the articulatory qualities of phonemes, what he names the infraphonemic level. The movements in the three-dimensional bucco-pharyngeal space are considered as units that the author calls kinemes. And these kinemes are able to establish a link with the cognitive sphere of language. We propose, in this article, to resume some case studies of Toussaint's and demonstrate what they gain by being completed by extending or going beyond the fundamental postulates which motivated them : the massive non-arbitrariness of the sign and, de facto, the "a signifier : a signified" principle. To this purpose we will apply our own method, the "theory of salience", which aims at detecting, by morpho-semantic analogy, submorphemic elements of all kinds (phono-articulatory, graphic) and types (duplicative, not duplicative). The object of these additional criteria is to demonstrate that, by taking into account all the aspects of the signifier, the legacy of Toussaint's theory of sign acquires all the more originality. Following the example of Guiraud, we mix the onomagiological and semasiological approaches about the concept of "movement" in several languages and the adjectives big, small, large and their "synonyms" linked to the concept of "smallness / greatness".L'analyse lexicale selon Maurice Toussaint à la lumière de la " théorie de la saillance " : propositions complémentaires Maurice Toussaint a échafaudé une théorie d'analyse du signe axée sur la rationalisation des qualités articulatoires des phonèmes, ce qu'il nomme le niveau infraphonématique.

    Jean-Philippe Toussaint and New novel

    No full text
This thesis deals with the question whether Jean-Philippe Toussaint's work resembles the work of the authors of the New novel, particularly Alain Robbe-Grillet. The thesis initiates with the topics covered by the New Novel: the main ideas and their realization and characteristics of the new writing style. This is followed by the analysis of a contemporary Belgian author, Jean-Philippe Toussaint. There is a short introduction of his life and character, his work and reasons why he is so popular and how he became a success. The main point of this part is the analysis of his writing style and its development from his early novels up to his present work. This thesis tries to look into the similarities and differences of J.-P. Toussaint's work and the work of the authors of the New novel. It mainly focuses on the use of objects, what role they play in Toussaint's novels, how they are described and the importance of their description for understanding the plot. The analysis begins with an introduction to the 1950s' new wave authors, later called the authors of the New novel, and their complaints aimed at the classical 19th century novel. We base this part mainly on Alain Robbe-Grillet's ideas. This author totally rejects classical plot, characters, accurate description of reality and linear time-flow. Instead, he..
