Al-Bāb et Iram aux colonnes. La réécriture du mythe

    No full text
In 1964, Ġassān Kanafānī wrote the play al-Bāb (The Door). In its foreword and in a final note to the play, Kanafānī claimed that al-Bāb’s topic was the myth of Iram ḏāt al-ʿimād (Iram of the Pillars) as it appears in the Quran, in Yāqūt’s Dictionary of Countries and in Ṭabarī’s History. He also informed the reader that quotations from the sources were embedded in commas and that any contemporary interpretation of the subject would be misleading since the myth is ancient. A study of the rewriting process, namely a comparison between the myth as it is written in the sources announced by the author and in al-Bāb, reveals significant aspects of the play. Clearly, the claimed accuracy in reporting the solemn sources is an expedient since additions innovate the classical myth. Contrasting the ancestral value of Iram as an example of hubris, the myth in the play tells of a man fighting against his fate and imposed power. Iram becomes a symbol of the withstanding Palestinian fight. Then, rewriting is a strategy serving symbolism and empowering the message of the play through an opposition to the ancestral myth

    No full text
The bio-physical, economic, and socio-political determinants of the agroecosystem of the Iram Resettlement Site, Olongapo, Zambales was documented and analyzed. The duration of the farm practice was 23 days. The author stayed in the resettlement site on a full-time basis to conduct interviews of key informants, do mapping and transect applying the data collection techniques of the Participatory Rural Appraisal System. The resettlement site is managed by the city government of Olongapo and has a resettlement site committee headed by a site manager from the Mt. Pinatubo Commission. It is situated on the hills of New Cabalan, Olongapo and has a total land area of 100 ha, 70 of which has been designated for agriculture and the other 30 for residence and facilities. Some portion of the area designated for agriculture are under dispute along with some private organizations who lay claim on it. there are 11 sitios with 515 families, 70% of which are Aytas. The area is generally rolling and mountinous and is beset with problems such as degraded soil, lack of suitable planting materials, irrigation system, and livelihood to sustain the resettled families. Sloping agricultural land technology, bio-intensive gardening, small water impounding project, and other technologies appropriate to the area are proposed. Short, medium, and long term recommendations were given. These recommendations must be applied immediately to alleviate the condition of the constituents who solely depend on agriculture for subsistence

Towards sustainable urban waterfronts in the Middle East: assessing the role of cultural heritage in the redevelopment of Port Sultan Qaboos in Oman

When looking at a country like Oman that is abundant in its historical and cultural heritage, it is apparent that these aspects have a huge role in shaping this country’s identity, and remains to this day engraved in different parts of its built environment. However, the values and opportunities of cultural heritage are increasingly overlooked in urban developments, due to the misconception that it might not fit in the mold or vision that developers are creating with trends of “smart, high-tech, innovative cities”. This strongly applies to countries in the Middle-East as they attempt to replicate existing successful developments, while disregarding the context of the area, culture, and identity that distinguishes them and makes them unique, as a result; this has led to failed schemes and unavoidable lack of identity in these projects. Integrating certain aspects of cultural heritage in urban developments could be of high value to a city, creating several opportunities that cultivate the success of future developments. In order to accomplish a successfully integrated project that combines the area “Port” and city, old with the new, past and future, it is important for stakeholders; from both public and private sectors are involved in the decision making process, taking cultural heritage into consideration. Subsequently, the notion of integrating cultural heritage in sustainable developments arises, and by using the contributions of cultural heritage towards influencing the stakeholder’s decision making process; taking into account the necessity of incorporating cultural heritage into their visions. However, with upcoming future developments in Oman, it becomes clear that there are certain challenges that come with forming strategies, and implementing them from both private and public sectors perspectives that remains challenging due to poor collaboration. This research aims to fill in the gap in literature on a specific part of culture integration; which is cultural heritage and its value in sustainable waterfront regenerations. Through identifying the contributions that cultural heritage provide for sustainable waterfront developments, and what opportunities it could create for the society, economy and tourism development of the city, the process of implementation and integration can then be steered by integrating the right management tools in regards to conservation of heritage.Architecture, Urbanism and Building Sciences | Management in the Built Environmen

Estratégia operária e neocapitalismo Working-class strategy and neocapitalism

This text discusses some of the questions raised by André Gorz in his book Working-class strategy and neocapitalism, published in the mid 1960s. It situates this work as part of a wider set of studies by the author in which he explores the transformations in capitalism in central countries after the Second World War, focusing on how these prompted the need for new action strategies among the working-class and union movements. The first theme discussed is the relationship between general and specific demands and the role performed by reformism in working-class action. Secondly, based on this new phase, the article reflects on André Gorz's studies concerning overall changes within capitalism and, by extension, within the more developed capitalist societies. Finally, the article analyzes in more detail the question of the workplace, company, factory and production as a fundamental locus in the fight for working-class emancipation

Remote versus local controls of east Pacific intraseasonal variability

2012 Spring.Includes bibliographical references. The Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) is the dominant mode of tropical intraseasonal variability and propagates eastward at 5 m/s with primary signals in wind and precipitation. During boreal summer, interactions between intraseasonal variability in the eastern Hemisphere and the east Pacific warm pool are often described as a local amplification of the propagating MJO. However, the precise mechanism by and degree to which intraseasonal variability in the eastern Hemisphere affects the east Pacific warm pool are not well understood. One school of thought holds that the MJO initiates a dry intraseasonal Kelvin wave response in the west Pacific that rapidly propagates into the Western Hemisphere and initiates intraseasonal convective variability there. To quantify the relationship between the source (Eastern Hemisphere) and amplification region (east Pacific warm pool), sensitivity tests in two separate models are used to determine the importance of local versus remote controls of east Pacific warm pool intraseasonal variability. The two models include the National Center for Atmospheric Research Community Atmosphere Model 3 (CAM3) and the International Pacific Research Center Regional Atmosphere Model (IRAM). The two models use different schemes to isolate the east Pacific from eastward-propagating intraseasonal variability that impinges from the west. Removing the influence of the MJO on the east Pacific warm pool in these two models reveals different insights into local versus remote control of intraseasonal variability in the east Pacific. The CAM3 produces comparable intraseasonal variability in winds and precipitation in the east Pacific when Kelvin wave signals from the west are removed, suggesting that the Eastern Hemisphere MJO helps to pace east Pacific intraseasonal variability, although east Pacific variability can exist in isolation from the MJO. Thus, the CAM3 supports independent intraseasonal variability in the east Pacific warm pool that may be phase locked to intraseasonal variability in the Eastern Hemisphere in observations. However, the IRAM has very small east Pacific intraseasonal variability when isolated from global MJO signals. The weak intraseasonal variability in IRAM may be a result of mean low-level wind biases that cause 30 to 90 day surface flux anomalies to be out of phase with 30 to 90 day precipitation and low level wind anomalies. As a result, the IRAM model does not support an independent local mode of intraseasonal variability in the east Pacific

At the Gates of the Borgian Reception: Refigurations, Intertextualities and Heavy Metal

The following paper discusses the reception of Jorge Luis Borges Shortstories by the Swedish band At the Gates. The influence of the South-American author is made evident in some of the lyrics in the At War with Reality (2014a) album. At the Gates presents a refiguration (Ricœur, 2009) of the borgesian narrative and creates redescriptions of the plots and the setting. Besides, the lyrics contain intertextual elements (Zavala, 2017) that are related with the texts of the Latin-American writer. This paper shows a proposal of At the Gates against an imposition of reality that is similar to that in Borges’ work
