Psychological and cultural insights into consumption of luxury western brands in India

    No full text
India has always had wealthy elites such as the maharajas, upper class and royalty that consume luxury products throughout its consumption history. The relatively recent economic rise of the middle class with an increase in disposable income is leading to consumption of luxury en mass. This qualitative study examines why consumers buy luxury, what they believe luxury is and how their perception of luxury impacts buying behaviour in the context of India. The present study explores luxury constructs drawn from the literature and provides some explanation for luxury consumption behaviour in India. The findings reveal that psychological and cultural factors in Indian society play a major part in shaping luxury consumption. While the findings suggest little support for homogenous luxury preference, Indian consumers share cultural characteristics of lavish consumption of luxury and display of wealth in social functions. Luxury reflects conspicuous consumption and status, and signals wealth for individuals, and conveys social identity and status in Indian society

Study of Grid-Connected PV System for a Low Voltage Distribution System: A Case Study of Cambodia

    No full text
The low voltage (LV) distribution systems are extended year by year due to the increase in energy demand. To overcome this issue, distribution system utilities have been focusing on designing and operating an appropriate distribution system with minimum capital and operational expenditure for supplying electricity to users. This article compares different algorithms to design an LVAC distribution system in a rural area, which focuses on minimizing the total length of lines and the power losses and balancing the loads among the three phases including the economic evaluation of the grid-connected PV system. Firstly, the shortest path (SP) algorithm is established to search for the minimization of the conductor used. Secondly, three different algorithms which are repeated phase sequence (RPABC), first fit bin packing (FFBP), and mixed-integer quadratic programming (MIQP) algorithms are developed to balance the load and minimize power losses. Next, a comparative result of three different algorithms is provided. Finally, the techno-economic analysis of the grid-connected PV system with different electricity tariffs with hybrid optimization of multiple energy resources (HOMER) software is studied in the planning period. To validate a proposed method, the 129-buses low voltage distribution in a rural village, in Cambodia, is tested. The simulation result confirms the optimal solution of the MIQP algorithm and PV system integration in designing a distribution system in a particular case study

Optimal feeder routing and phase balancing for an unbalanced distribution system: a case study in Cambodia

    No full text
This paper aims to minimize the distance of the feeder path from high-voltage/medium-voltage (HV/MV) substation to medium-voltage/low-voltage (MV/LV) transformers and minimize power loss in an unbalanced distribution system by the phase-swapping concept-based load balancing. The shortest path algorithm (SPA) and the genetic algorithm (GA) for optimal feeder routing and phase balancing separately in the MV unbalanced distribution network are proposed. First, the relevant data for the system is collected. These data include substation coordinates (X, Y), active and reactive power (P, Q), phase connections, and lines’ impedance (Z). secondly, the performance of the existing configuration of the test system with numerous indications is presented. Finally, the proposed method is performed to minimize the length and power losses. The real 47-bus test system in Cambodia is chosen to demonstrate the proposed method. In this study, overall power losses, the maximum voltage imbalance, and voltage regulation are computed by the backward/forward sweep load flow. The results based on the simulation indicate the importance of the proposed approach, especially for distribution system designers and operators

Russian Evolution: Rozhdestvensky and the ‘image of the author’ explored with reference to his book General Philology (1996) Moscow

    No full text
The work of Professor Yuri Rozhdestvensky is almost completely unavailable in English. This paper provides analysis of two parts of his book, General Philology – the Introduction and Chapter Five entitled ‘Printed Literature’ . This work is translated for the first time by Paul and Elena Richard and is now available on https://sas-space.sas.ac.uk . Analysis of this translated work reveals Rozhdestvensky’s lifelong interest and commitment to a theory of culture as a historical, linguistic, philological and semiotic development. The paper presented here highlights the analysis of poetics in Chapter Five with reference to Professor V. V. Vinogradov whose work is also largely unavailable in English translation. The use of codes, as defined by Roman Jakobson, provides the theory for the provision of connections between Rozhdestvensky’s analysis of culture, poetics, linguistics, semiotics and philology whereby his work can be understood by those unfamiliar with his theoretical position. This includes special emphasis on Vinogradov’s theory of the image of the author. The necessary component of diachrony in Rozhdestvensky’s work and the links to the discipline of Narratology are highlighted. It is concluded that Rozhdestvensky has unique and original contributions to make to academic studies through his particular understanding of a Theory of Culture

The Private Cost of Long-Term Care in Canada: Where You Live Matters

    No full text
Canadians expect the same access to health care whether they are rich or poor, and wherever they live, often without direct charge at the point of service. However, we find that the private cost of long-term care differs greatly across the country, and within provinces, we find substantial variation, depending on income level, marital status, and, in Quebec alone, on assets owned. A non-married person with average income would pay more than twice as much in the Atlantic provinces as in Quebec, while a couple with one in care would pay almost four times as much in Newfoundland as in Alberta.long-term care, private cost

Effective integration of mechatronics into the mechanical engineering curriculum: A cooperative, project-based learning model with seamless lab-lecture implementation

    No full text
In today's competitive markets, engineers face ongoing challenges to produce complex engineering systems with a high level of performance, reliability, value and price. This requires the integration of a number of technologies, which may be accomplished through mechatronics. This paper presents a model for integrating mechatronics education into the Mechanical Engineering curriculum at the American University of Beirut (AUB). A strong component of the model is collaborative, project-based, learning-by-doing experience in which students realize mechatronics devices, possibly of their own choosing, using various laboratory tools including microcontroller technologies. The implementation strategy involves minimal lecturing, a seamless labllecture interface, and just-in-time learning. An example of a typical student's project is presented and course assessment is briefly discussed. © 2005 TEMPUS Publications.Al-Habaibeh A, 2003, INT J ENG EDUC, V19, P615; Auslander DM, 1996, IEEE-ASME T MECH, V1, P5, DOI 10.1109-3516.491404; BERGH CT, P 1999 IEEE ASME INT; CARRYER JE, 1995, MECHATRONICS, V5, P787, DOI 10.1016-0957-4158(95)00046-8; Carryer JE, 2003, INT J ENG EDUC, V19, P581; Djordjevich A, 2003, INT J ENG EDUC, V19, P610; Djordjevich A, 2003, INT J ENG EDUC, V19, P544; DURFEE WK, 1995, MECHATRONICS, V5, P775, DOI 10.1016-0957-4158(95)00044-6; *ENG ACCR COMM ACC, 1997, ENG CRIT 2000 CRIT A; Friedman T., 1999, LEXUS OLIVE TREE; Geddam A, 2003, INT J ENG EDUC, V19, P575; Grimheden M, 2003, INT J ENG EDUC, V19, P569; GUPTA SK, 2003, INT J ENG EDUC, V19, P537; Kyura N, 1996, IEEE-ASME T MECH, V1, P10, DOI 10.1109-3516.491405; LEIFER L, 1997, SUITE 210 MODEL GLOB; Meek S, 2003, MECHATRONICS, V13, P1, DOI 10.1016-S0957-4158(01)00058-7; Murray W.
