Teaching genres in the EFL classrooms: reports and picture books   Area temática: Aplicaciones educativas de la LSF Tipo de presentación: ponencia individual de investigación Autora: Samiah Hassan Facultad de Filosofía y Letras Universidad Nacional de Cuyo     Resumen     Teaching genres has become a significant objective in EFL classes in various levels of education in our context (EFL classrooms in Mendoza). However, EFL textbooks do not often include genres as pedagogical objects in themselves, but they rather use them as contexts for the teaching of lexis. grammatical structures and/or functions. The main aim of teaching genres should be for students to be prepared to participate effectively in various social interactions in which language is used. How can we achieve that? As language teachers, we need to understand how texts work, what the role of the language is in a specific genre to be able to offer adequate strategies for students to produce such genre efficiently. Mostly based on Genre Theory and Genre Pedagogy, our project, “Géneros textuales en la enseñanza-aprendizaje de inglés como lengua extranjera. Textos  multimodales y propuesta pedagógica,” promotes generic literacies and, thus, proposes strategies for a more explicit and informed approach to teaching and learning genres in EFL contexts. Within the project, we have worked on various genres at different levels of instruction, genres typically found in family and educational contexts, both in their verbal and multimodal expression. This paper focuses on some of the results obtained in our project: a) on the analysis of generic structure of reports in natural and social sciences, their stages and phases, b) on the macro-meanings that are expressed through multimodal resources in children’s picture books; and c) the pedagogical implications that these findings may have. How a better understanding both of the generic structures of texts, and the multimodal macro-meanings contribute to a more efficient analysis, production and evaluation of genres in EFL classes.   Bibliography   - Boccia, Cristina et al.  (2013) Working with Texts in the EFL Classroom. The dataset contains high spatial (~10 m posting), temporal (1-2 days), and spectral (1 nm) resolution spectral and broadband albedo measurements measured at 325-1075nm using an Analytical Spectral Device (ASD) Fieldspec HandHeld 2 Spectroradiometer. High quality albedo data were collected on June 16, 19, and 25th 2013. The study site is located on the southwestern Greenland Ice Sheet approximately 30 km northeast of Kangerlussuaq, Greenland. Albedo measurements were collected along a 1.25 km transect situated well within the ablation zone

A number of theories on Islamic accounting have been proposed in the study on Islamic accounting. It has been showed that there is a require for Moslem business organization to have a different accounting that build successful for Muslim, not only in this life but also for hereafter. This study attempts to elaborate the perception on credit analysis in Islamic banking and in conventional banking in Jakarta. There are three hypotheses that has been examined. The result shows that there is no significant perception difference among the two on "process of risk management application " and "credit risk identification " but in the 3rd identification test, it was found a significant difference perception on "appearing stagnant credit". Although the means are not significantly different, the descriptive statistics shows that the perception of credit analysts in Islamic banking is more pragmatic towards Islamic Accounting issues rather than those in conventional accounting. Keywords: Credit analysts, conventional bank, Islamic bank, accounting information.Islamic perspective.</jats:p

The Impact of Physical Activity on Stress and Anxiety Levels in College Students

Abstract Introduction: The mental health of college students has become a growing concern, with rising levels of stress, anxiety, and depression posing significant challenges to their academic success and well-being. In recent years, there has been a growing prevalence of depression, anxiety, and other mental health issues among college students (Lipson et al., 2021), with these problems often being exacerbated by academic pressures and social stressors (Asif et al., 2020). In a review by Mahindru et al, a thorough analysis examined the relationship between physical activity and mental health, highlighting how exercise can positively enhance emotional well-being and contribute to overall mental resilience (2023). Methods: This 2024 study investigated the relationship between physical activity and self-reported stress and anxiety levels among students at Belmont University. An observational cross-sectional survey design was used to gather data from 104 undergraduate students at Belmont University. Participants were required to be 18 years or older and currently enrolled as full-time students. The survey assessed students\u27 physical activity habits (frequency, duration, and type of activity) and their self-reported levels of stress and anxiety. A total of 12 questions were included, focusing on physical activity habits and mental health perceptions. Results: The findings showed that students who engaged in physical activity three or more times per week reported significantly lower levels of stress and anxiety compared to those who exercised less frequently. Many participants also reported feeling immediate reductions in stress and anxiety following exercise. Preliminary analysis indicated a negative correlation between physical activity frequency and self-reported stress and anxiety levels. Discussion: The findings of this study suggest that physical activity can significantly reduce stress and anxiety among college students. Students who exercised three or more times a week reported lower levels of stress and anxiety. These findings align with previous research indicating that exercise boosts mood and mental well-being. Future research could explore how different types of exercise and long-term habits impact mental health outcomes. References Asif, S., Mudassar, A., Shahzad, T. Z., Raouf, M., & Pervaiz, T. (2020). Spectral and Antibiotic Susceptibility of Pathogens Isolated from Saudi Patients with Diabetic Foot Infections

    No full text
Diabetic foot infections (DFIs) are a significant health issue and a common complication among patients with diabetes. To develop antibiotic therapy for these high-risk patients, the current study evaluates the scope of DFIs and identifies the causing microbes. It also measures spectrum and antibiotic susceptibility of the pathogens isolated from adults with DFIs in Saudi Arabia. To achieve the study objectives, a cross-sectional study was implemented and the baseline characteristics for 44 patients with DFIs were defined. Optimal aerobic and anaerobic microbiological techniques were utilized to culture specimens isolated from infected foot ulcers. The standard microbiological methods were employed to identify the bacterial isolates and antibiotic susceptibility testing was conducted following the procedures of the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI). Results showed that 12 microorganisms were isolated from the participants’ diabetic foot ulcers. Staphylococcus Aureus was ranked first because it appeared in 29 (65.9%) cases. Streptococcus Agalactiae was ranked second and multi-microbial infections were also found. Most of the organisms were susceptible to Vancomycin, Ciprofloxacin, and Cefalexin, but they were resistant to Methicillin, Gentamicin, and Ampicillin antibiotics. Staphylococcus Aureus was most sensitive to Ciprofloxacin, while it was resistant to Methicillin. About 10% of the isolates were multidrug-resistant. The study concludes that while Vancomycin should be used empirically for Gram-positive isolates, Ciprofloxacin can be taken into consideration for most of the Gram-negatives aerobes. Based on including various microorganisms and the advent of multidrug-resistant strains, proper culture and sensitivity testing are necessary prior to the empirical therapy
