Alston) is an Indonesia’s natural substance which has been known only as an ornamental plant but have medicinal properties. Leaves of syzygium jambos contain some antibacterial compounds including flavonoids and tannins. Streptococcus mutans is a bacteria that causes dental caries and has the ability to produce the acidic in the oral cavity. An alternative way to cope Streptococcus mutans is  by using leaves of syzygium jambos. The purpose of this study is to determine whether the extract of syzygium jambos leaf  is effective to inhibit the growth of Streptococcus mutans which was seen from the inhibition zone. This study was an experimental research by using a modified Kirby-bauer method with filter paper. Syzygium jambos leaf samples were taken from Paslaten, East of Tomohon, Tomohon. The syzygium jambos’s leaf was extracted with maceration method by using ethanol 96%. Streptococcus mutans bacteria was taken from a pure bacteria stock in the Laboratory of Sam Ratulangi University. The result on this research is Inhibition zone of leaf extract against Streptococcus mutans  are about 13.15 mm,  it can be concluded that the extract of syzygium jambos leaf is effective to obstract the growth of Streptococcus mutans bacteria Key words: Rosses apple leaf (Syzigium jambos L. Alston), Streptococcus mutans, .

An exact approach for evaluating the benefits from technological change

It is commonly believed that taxing agricultural commodities in developing countries, and subsidizing agricultural commodities in industrial countries, reduces incentives in the developing countries for both current production and longer-term investments in capital, knowledge, technology, and infrastructure. It is argued that distortions in agricultural markets have kept investments in research and development, and productivity rates low in agriculture in developing countries. Martin and Alston lay the theoretical foundation for empirical studies of how such distortions affect returns to agricultural research and development in developing countries. Earlier studies of the benefits from technological change have typically used partial equilibrium models with Marshallian welfare measures. Such models have not allowed for a general set of market distortions and market interactions. Techniques recently developed for evaluating welfare in the context of general equilibrium models better measure the implications of trade distorting policies. Martin and Alston describe how to harness these approaches to evaluate the benefits and costs of technological changes. They show that a modified trade expenditure function can be used to measure welfare changes exactly, with a model consistent with the optimizing behavior of both producers and consumers. They do so in a general setting that allows for multiple market distortions and multiple paths of general equilibrium feedback. They illustrate this approach using a quadratic form for a profit function that is a component of the trade expenditure function. They spell out, in principle, how to apply this approach with minimal requirements for additional information, using the results from a computable general equilibrium model. They provide a diagram to illustrate the application of the technique.Environmental Economics&Policies,Economic Theory&Research,Access to Markets,Markets and Market Access,Consumption

Probing for Holes in the 100-Year-Old Baseball Exemption: A New Post-Alston Challenge

As professional baseball’s unique exemption to antitrust law celebrates its one-hundredth year of existence, it faces a new attack in Nostalgia Partners v. Office of the Commissioner of Baseball, a claim by a group of minor league owners shut out of MLB’s recent restructuring of its minor league affiliate system. While the baseball exemption has weathered dozens of similar challenges over the past century, the Nostalgia Partners plaintiffs claim that circumstances on the Supreme Court have changed enough that the justices would be willing to overturn or narrow the exemption in their favor. This claim rests with the Court’s unanimous decision in NCAA v. Alston refusing to grant intercollegiate athletics similar antitrust immunity. This Article examines the Nostalgia Partners claim that Alston changed the game for the baseball exemption by comparing the historical and contextual circumstances of the two cases. In doing so, this Article compares central differences in interpretation of key baseball exemption jurisprudence to similar conditions that afforded the Supreme Court an opportunity to reject the NCAA’s stare decisis-based claim to antitrust protection. Ultimately, however, this Article finds that the comparison breaks down in several key areas, including most critically the vast differences in the strength of the precedent that each claim to immunity relies upon. As such, we can only assume that the next one hundred years will feature similar special treatment for baseball under the antitrust laws—regardless of Alston and of that special treatment’s well-noted “‘unrealistic’ and ‘inconsistent’ and ‘aberration[al]’” nature

A Three-Tiered Circuit Split: Why the Supreme Court Was Right to Hear Alston v. NCAA

This article provides a retrospective look at the Supreme Court’s decision to review the NCAA v. Alston antitrust litigation by defining and analyzing a three-tiered circuit split that existed in the courts’ application of antitrust law to NCAA amateurism regulations. Using mixed-methods citation network analysis review, this article shows wide disarray within the NCAA amateurism discrete citation network by analyzing the doctrinal differences in how three distinct jurisdictional silos applied antitrust law to four broad categories of NCAA rules. As such, this article argues that the Supreme Court was correct to grant certiorari to the Alstonpetitioners to resolve this circuit split and better define the precedential effect of the much-debated NCAA v.
