Original Sin as Salvation: The Apocalyptic Boon in Philip Pullman's "His Dark Materials"

    No full text
In this piece, Houman Sadri applies the concept of ‘apocalypse’ in its original sense as an uncovering of hidden truth; the apocalypse here does not represent an end of everything, but rather is offered as a cure for our dystopian condition. The approach is firmly informed by the work of Joseph Campbell in his in his framing of the Hero’s Journey, or Monomyth, and the chapter explores the apocalyptic denouement of Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials trilogy (1995; 1997; 2000). Through his exploration of the text, Sadri also appraises the concept of apocalypse itself as this boon writ large, with the transfigurative paradigm shift being pinpointed as something far older in nature than it may initially appear

An Exceptional Star İn Yeşilçam: Sadri Alışık

    No full text
In this thesis, Sadri Alışık's film career, which lasted from 1944 to 1994, was examined. Sadri Alışık is an exceptional star in Yesilcam cinema's star system. In Yesilcam cinema, which is directed by commercial concerns, based on formulas and templates, and in which commercially successful films repeated constantly, the stars have also had to repeat themselves and could not go beyond certain role patterns. Sadri Alışık differs from the stars of the time in that he does not play categorical roles and can play different characters in different genres. It is necessary for stars to provide the audience with certain features that will not change from film to film, in order to ensure the commercial success of the films. Unlike other Yesilcam stars, Sadri Alışık does not promise a certain character type or film genre to the audience. Instead, a number of personality traits that emerge in all of the different characters he portrays and the unique performance style of Alışık appear as invariant elements of his star identity.

From “finite” to “narrative” – The enclitic marker =a in Kherwarian (North Munda) and Sadri (Indo-Aryan)

This study deals with what we refer to here as the “ narrative marker ” =a in Sadri, the traditional Indo-Aryan lingua franca of western and central Jharkhand in eastern-central India. We argue that this marker in Sadri is the result of the reanalysis of an inherited focus marker which originally attached to the present tense in Sadri and that this reanalysis was influenced by speakers of Kherwarian languages using Sadri as a lingua franca, as the distribution of this marker in Sadri closely resembles that of the homophonous finite marker in Kherwarian. Finally, we show how this feature contributes to further define a micro-linguistic area centered on western-central Jharkhand

    Language Shift : The Sadri-Speaking Community of the Sundarbans/ ভাষা প্রতিস্থাপন : সুন্দরবনের সাদরি ভাষিকগোষ্ঠী

Linguistic diversity is facing a critical threat worldwide, with many indigenous and minority languages becoming endangered or disappearing altogether. This study focuses on the indigenous communities of the Sundarbans region in India, who originally migrated from the Chotanagpur plateau. Upon settling in the Sundarbans, these communities gradually adopted Sadri as their mother tongue, replacing their earlier tribal languages. Over time, Sadri emerged as a common language for communication within and between various tribal groups. The main objective of this research is to examine the present status and transformation of the Sadri language among selected villages in the Sundarbans. While Bengali, the dominant regional language, is increasingly used in education, administration, and employment, Sadri remains actively spoken in many homes and community spaces. The research highlights the growing bilingualism among the people and the mixing of Sadri with Bengali in everyday speech, particularly among younger generations. This study also explores how factors like age, village location, customs, and traditional folk practices—especially music—affect the preservation and transmission of the Sadri language. Older community members tend to use Sadri more fluently and consistently, while younger speakers often show signs of language shift influenced by formal schooling and economic integration into Bengali-speaking society. Furthermore, the study investigates how livelihood patterns, especially the need to work in Bengali-speaking environments, are contributing to changes in language preference and usage. As economic dependence on the dominant language grows, Sadri is at risk of marginalization despite its cultural significance. In conclusion, this research sheds light on both the resilience and vulnerability of Sadri in the Sundarbans. While it continues to be a key part of community identity and cultural expression, the pressures of socio-economic change are gradually reshaping its role and future among the indigenous population

background/aim: reduction of postoperative stress is a modern tenet in surgical oncology with the aim of reducing early postoperative lymphopenia. our prospective study evaluated post-operative immune response at baseline and postoperative day (POD) 1 and 2 after direct-to-implant pre-pectoral (PP) breast reconstruction with titanium-coated polypropylene mesh versus subpectoral (SP) breast reconstruction. patients and methods: between january and december 2020, 37 patients were randomized between PP (n=17) or SP (n=16) reconstruction. baseline and operative data were analyzed. postoperative pain assessment using numeric pain rating scale (NPRS), and a full blood count with lymphocyte subsets were collected before surgery, and on POD1 and POD2. data were evaluated by two-way analysis of variance test. results: baseline data did not demonstrate any statistical difference. Inter-group analysis did not provide any statistically significant difference in leukocytes, total lymphocytes, and lymphocytes subsets among SP and PP reconstruction groups (p>0.05). however, compared to specificity, the PP group experienced shorter operative time, with a mean difference 30.19 min, lower blood loss (p=0.017), lower rate of postoperative anemia (p=0.039), and a more favorable profile in inter-group pain analysis (p<0.001). conclusion: PP reconstruction with titanium-coated polypropylene mesh does not increase immunological impairment in the early postoperative period when compared with SP reconstruction and provides lower postoperative pain, reduction of operative time, and lower rate of postoperative anemia

    Single-Chip Cloud Computer thermal model

Spatial and temporal non-uniformities of workload and power consumption advanced Systems-on-Chip (SoC) platforms result in localized high power densities, which lead to temperature hot-spots, gradients and thermal cycles that may cause non-uniform ageing and accelerated chip failure. The Single-Chip Cloud Computer (SCC) is an experimental many-core processor created by Intel Labs and it integrates thermal sensors to track the chip thermal behavior. Unfortunately these sensors provide a limited introspection on the full-chip thermal map, as they monitor temperature at a coarse granularity. In this paper we build a fine-grained thermal and power model of SCC using a state-of-the-art thermal modeling tool (Hotspot). We calibrate the model with measured data from chip sensors. We assess the predictive power of the thermal model and its main sources of error

MAI Feminism & Visual Culture: Focus Issue Ten: Feminist Discourse in Comics & Graphic Novels

    No full text
This issue shines the spotlight on feminist discourse in comics and graphic novels. As a medium, comics exist in a liminal space between literature and visual art. They tell stories that tend to unfold within the tension between words—or even lack thereof—and pictures. Unlike film or television, they allow us to follow their narratives at our chosen speed. Some argue that comics are the most versatile media because they represent the broadest of churches, from charcoal sketches to watercolour paintings, from newspaper strips and satirical cartoons to prestige hardback volumes (and all points in between). Importantly, comics and graphic novels by female practitioners that approach themes of identity and belonging from a feminist or LGBTQ+ standpoint are central to the current resurgence of the medium. Whether fiction or autobiography, and across a wide range of genres, critiques of dominant patriarchal cultures are key to their narrative content, context, and structure. Our authors speak of comics and graphic novels in the context of burningly relevant, global topics such as women in Iran, contemporary Arab feminism, abortion, and queer struggles. Next to it, we feature work looking at the Suffragettes, the 1990s Zine culture and an examination of alcohol use in one of the most popular Scandinavian comic series, to name but a handful. Alongside critical reflection, we present creative submissions and interviews with comics practitioners. For example, Sarah Lightman offers watercolour depictions of Biblical women escaping historical paintings only to find themselves trapped in the modern miasma of Covid lockdowns. Sydney Heifler’s graphic project explores post-rape PTSD, and Miki Shaw uses her creative practice to debate the realities of parenting. These pieces sit alongside illuminating conversations with such figures as Mariko Tamaki, Jiipu Uusitalo, Bishakh Som, and Ana Penyas. Elsewhere in this issue, we feature an appraisal of Marie Kreutzer’s celebrated 2022 film Corsage, a timely and sobering conversation with director Irina Tsilyk on the subject of filming on the frontline of the Ukraine-Russia conflict, and and a breath-taking and ambitious creative and critical hybrid interpretation of the sick lives and works of Bessie Bruce and Cookie Mueller, which activates loving epistolary exchanges across time to theorise letter writing as feminist care. The presented collection of work was compiled and edited by a team led by Houman Sadri that included Ariel Kahn (Middlesex University), Laura Antola (University of Turku) and Anna Misiak. It was commissioned at the height of the pandemic, taking shape during a difficult and tumultuous time for everyone. Yet, our contributors and guest editors’ commitment and perseverance have been inspirational

Cataloged from PDF version of article. The basic aim of this study is to present an intellectual biography of Sadri Maksudî Arsal (1878-1957). To accomplish this task the present study is divided into two main parts. The first part presents an essential biography, presented in chronological order. Its object is to illuminate the life of Sadri Maksudî, his intellectual development and his activities by revealing his time as well as the major developments within them. The second part analyzes Sadri Maksudî’s views on a variety of matters and subjects, particularly nationalism, history, linguistics, and law, though he seems to also have come up with interesting ideas on other issues. Sadri Maksudî’s beliefs about nationalism are explored both on their own and by taking into consideration historical and contemporary analyses on the issue. While his thoughts on linguistics are analyzed via the framework of the linguistic reformation in the Republic of Turkey, his perspectives about history and law are basically analyzed in terms of the major developments in these areas and the methodologies used by Sadri Maksudî.Miftahov, Alma
