POLITICAL ISLAM: Asking the Wrong Questions?

    No full text
The empirical literature on political Islam is fairly rich and getting better, but theoretical interpretations of these data are still quite primitive. This gap is a product of Orientalist traditions that essentialize Islamic movements, a resulting lack of appreciation for their global diversity, and the inevitable politicization of the subject matter. This essay seeks not only to identify the most important studies in the field but to show how they suggest a typology, chronology, and problematic that might lead to more fruitful analysis in the future.ABDELMALEK A, 1963, DIOGENES, V44, P107; ABRAHAMIAN E, KHOMEINISM ESSAYS IS; Abrahamian Ervand, 1989, IRANIAN MOJAHEDIN; Abun-Nasr Jamil M., 1965, TIJANIYYA SUFI ORDER; Adelkhah Fariba, 2000, BEING MODERN IRAN; Ahmed A. Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, Centro Tecnológico, Programa de Pós-Graduação em Engenharia Elétrica, Florianópolis, 2013.Este estudo envolve o projeto e o desenvolvimento de um dispositivo eletromagnético trifásico para análise de perdas magnéticas em estatores de máquinas elétricas girantes. Abstract : This study approaches the design and development of a three-phaseelectromagnetic device for analysis of magnetic losses in the stators ofrotating electric machines. It was supported by a literature review thatled to the construction of an experimental bench that was developed byGRUCAD and WEG Electric Equipments company. The proposedmethod allows a faithful evaluation of the magnetic losses taking placein the stator core of a three phase induction motor. For comparativepurposes, three suppliers of the same type of electrical steel sheets areevaluated using three different experimental methods, namely: theEpstein frame test, the no-load test with complete three phase inductionmotor, and the proposed electromagnetic device

Solutions of the 3D Navier-Stokes equations for initial data in Ḣ1/2: Robustness of regularity and numerical verification of regularity for bounded sets of initial data in Ḣ1

    No full text
We consider the three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations on a periodic domain. We give a simple proof of the local existence of solutions in Ḣ1/2, and show that the existence of a regular solution on a bounded time interval [0, T] is stable with respect to perturbations of the initial data in Ḣ1/2 and perturbations of the forcing function in L2(0, T;H-1/2). This forms the key ingredient in a proof that the assumption of regularity for all initial conditions in any given ball in Ḣ1 can be verified computationally in a finite time, strengthening a previous result of Robinson and Sadowski [J.C. Robinson and W. Sadowski, Numerical verification of regularity in the three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations for bounded sets of initial data, Asymptot

Spatially-localized time dependent solutions including turbulence and their interactions in 2D Kolmogorov flow

    No full text
In 2D Kolmogorov flow in small aspect ratio domains, spatially-localized solutions such as kink, traveling or time-dependent kink-antikink pars coexist. However, the conservation of the flow rate in the y direction strongly restrict combination of localized solutions and their positioning. We find that by adding a homogeneous flow U y their positioning is controlled and each of localized solutions including a spatially-localized chaos is isolated. Numerical results suggest that these isolated solutions can be elements constructing a whole flow

Characteristics of overlap region in high-Reynolds number turbulent channel flow

Direct numerical simulation of the fully developed turbulent channel flows have been carried out at the Reynolds number based on the friction velocity and the channel half width, 2000, 4000 and 8000. A hybrid 10th order accurate finite difference scheme in the stream and spanwise directions, and a second-order scheme in the wall-normal direction is adapted as the spatial discretization method. We observed the plateau profiles in the indicator function corresponded to the von Karman constant. Furthermore, second peak of streamwise pre-multiplied spectra were appeared in the same wall normal height, 300 < y+ < 600, in case of Re = 4000. Nevertheless, the effects of the lager than the channel half height scale on the streamwise turbulent intensity are fixed contributions without dependence on Reynolds number. These results suggested that the new streamwise vortexes are formed between buffer layer and outer layer with increasing of Reynolds number

La 'circunstancia' de 'Herederos y Pretendientes

In June 2010, the Ortega y Gasset Foundation hosted a Conference about the “Spanish Philosophical Transition” in order to debate the book of Francisco Vázquez, La filosofía española. Herederos y Pretendientes. Una lectura sociológica (1963-1990), recently published. This paper is the author’s response to criticism raised in the Conference and to published reviews received by this book. First, the author summarized the argument of Herederos y pretendientes. Secondly he responds and takes into account the most important objections against the book’s hypothesis and methodology. Finally the author evaluates the favorable judgments received by the book and suggests the limits of the historian’s task.Fundación Ortega y Gasset-Marañó
