Parallel finite-element codes for the simulation of two-dimensional and three-dimensional solid–liquid phase-change systems with natural convection

    No full text
We present and distribute a FreeFem++ Toolbox for the parallel computing of two- or three-dimensional liquid–solid phase-change systems involving natural convection. FreeFem++ (www.freefem.org) is a free finite-element software available for all existing operating systems. We use the recent library ffddm that makes available in FreeFem++ state-of-the-art scalable Schwarz domain decomposition methods (DDM). The single domain approach used in our previous contribution (Rakotondrandisa et al., 2020) is adapted for the use of the DDM method. As a result, the computational time is considerably reduced for 2D configurations and furthermore 3D problems become affordable. The numerical method is based on an enthalpy-porosity model. The same set of equations is solved in both liquid and solid phases: the incompressible Navier–Stokes equations with Boussinesq approximation for thermal effects. A Carman-Kozeny-type penalty term is added to the momentum equations to bring progressively the velocity to zero into the solid. Model equations are discretized using Galerkin triangular or tetrahedral finite elements. The coupled system of equations is integrated in time using a second-order Gear implicit scheme. The resulting discrete equations are solved using a Newton algorithm. The DDM approach is based on an overlapping Schwarz method. The mesh is first split in subdomains using Scotch or Metis libraries. The final linear system is then solved in parallel using a GMRES Krylov method, with a Restricted Additive Schwarz (RAS) preconditioner. The mesh is adapted during the computation using metrics control. The 3D-mesh adaptivity uses the mmg (www.mmgtools.org) open source library. Parallel 2D and 3D computations of benchmark cases of increasing difficulty are presented: natural convection of air, natural convection of water, melting or solidification of a phase-change material, and, finally, a water freezing case. For each case, careful validations are provided and the performance of the code is assessed. The robustness of the Toolbox in 3D is also demonstrated by adapting the number of processors to the number of tetrahedra, which can considerably vary after the mesh adaptation

    Variations on the Author

    No full text
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

The texts that contain the philosophy and ethics of kasulinggihan are very diverse, one of which is the Wrati sasana. Wrati sasana textis a teaching that contains rules, ethical teachings and taboos in Kasulinggihan\u27s spiritual life, which is followed by Sulinggih. In accordance with the teachings of the Kasulinggihan sasana, contained in the wrati sasana has a complete concept. This study seeks to discussthe teachings of Wrati Sasana for Sulinggih in the religious life of Tri Sadaka in traditional villages in Bali, as well as the implementation of the teachings of Wrati Sasana by Sulinggih in the religious life of Tri Sadaka in traditional villages in Bali. These three aspects are then revealed by hermeneutic theory, phenomenological theory, and religious theory. The procedure for disclosing this research is using literature study techniques, interviews and observations. Analyzed with the stages of data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. This study found that the importance of the teachings of wrati sasana in the Kasulinggihan sasana order in the traditional villages of Bali Aga, Apanaga, and Bali Anyar, is used as a moral guide, ritual behavior guide and sulinggih tri sadaka self-control guide in traditional villages in Bali

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    No full text
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

The construction of Karen Karnak: The multi-author-function

This thesis is situated within the comparatively recent developments of Web 2.0 and the emergence of interactive WikiMedia, and explores the mode of authorship within a Read/Write culture compared to that of a Read/Only tradition. The hypothesis of this study is that the role of the audience has become merged with the author, and as such, represents new functions and attributes, distinct from a more conventional concept of authorship, in which the roles of audience and author are more separate. Read/Write and participatory culture, as defined by this study, is focused on collaboration, and includes the influences of D.I.Y. culture, Open-Source practices and the production of text by multiple authors. Multi-authorship presents a re-thinking of several concepts which support the notion of the individual author, since the focus of multi-authorship is not on attribution and ownership of a finished text, but on the continued malleability of a text. Modes of multi-authorship, demonstrated in the use of the pseudonyms Alan Smithee and Karen Eliot, represent declarative authors whose names signify multiple origins, whilst concurrently indicating a distinct body of work. The function of these names form an important context to this study, since primary research involves the construction of an experimental mode of multi-authorship utilising WikiMedia technology and the interaction of thirty nine participants, who are invited to create a body of work under the collective pseudonym Karen Karnak. The data generated by this experiment is analysed using aspects of Michel Foucault's author-function to identify and determine power structures inherent in the WikiMedia context. The interplay of power structures, including concepts such as identity, ownership and the body of work, affect the resulting mode of authorship and contribute to the construction of Karen Karnak, suggesting further areas of research into the emerging multi-author

La Sadaka: prácticas religiosas populares e identidad gnaoua. Una aproximación etnográfica en Khamlia, Marruecos

    No full text
In the village of Khamlia, Morocco, religious practices and festivities of Islamic, Amazigh and Gnaoua tradition are held throughout the year where music is used for spiritual and medicinal purposes. These practices maintain its historical origins under a multicultural context, harboring traditions, customs and cultural attributes of pre-Islamic origins and attributed to West African ethnic groups, such as the Bambara and other belonging to the Mande ethnolinguistic group. The most important annual festival in Khamlia is the Sadaka. This ethnographic work exposes in detail the preparation, administration, and organization of the festival, in charge of the council of elders of the village, as well as an ethnographic approach to the festival and rituals carried out throughout the three days of duration.

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    No full text
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

By making an analysis beyond the general opinion about begging, the aim of this thesis is to show begging is not being in the gravy but has its own life world. In this context, by analyzing interrelations of beggars with society, with municipal constabulary and within themselves, in short by analyzing their interrelation with life, an existence form of human occurring through begging is attempted to be set forth. In line with this purpose, ethnographic field research method of social anthropology is carried out by joining the beggar pick-up efforts of municipal constabulary from December 2011 to June 2014. Beggars, almsgiving people and municipal constabulary are discussed within their actuality and with their interrelations with each other. Etymology, religion and history are urged upon during the conceptual discussion of the thesis while performance aspect of begging is examined by blending field experience during the theoretical discussion. Interaction of performance and body fiction is evaluated in phenomenological context. Field research observations are narrated over themes. As a result begging is evaluated as a performance and this evaluation is set forth by analyses and examples within the frame of field research

    koamabayili/VECTRON-author-checklist: VECTRON author checklist

We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
