    Exploring Determinant Factors Contributing to Students’ Choices in Selecting English Study Program (A Study at English Study Program of FKIP Tanjungpura University in Pontianak)

    This study aims at exploring the determinant factors contributing to students’ choice in selecting English Study Program (A Study on English Study Program at FKIP Tanjungpura University in Pontianak). It has been noticed that some of the students have a low qualification of English skill, therefore, it has become a problem for those students to follow the lesson. It has assumed that the students do not have sufficient information on their selection of choosing English Study Program. The problems of this study are: (1) What are the determinant factors influenced the students’ choice in selecting the English study program of FKIP University of Tanjungpura in Pontianak ?. And (2) What are the dominant determinant factors influenced the students’ choice in selecting the English study program of FKIP at the University of Tanjungpura in Pontianak ?. The purposes of the study are: (1) to find out the determinant factors influenced the students’ choice of selecting the English study program, (2) to identify the dominant determinant factors influenced the students’ choice in selecting the English study program,  and (3) to identify the deviation attitudes of the students in selecting English study program.  The method uses questionnaires which contain some information to be answered by the students.  There are 30 respondents as a sample of this research. The findings show that (1) the determinant factors are: a personal choice, the reputation of faculty, the reputation of the study program, teachers and parents, and a location. Meanwhile, the dominant determinant factors are (1) a personal choice (137), the reputation of the study program (119), teachers (111) and parents (107)

    Banyak kalangan menilai bahwa pendidikan gagal dalam membentuk perilaku peserta didik karena seringkali terjadinya tawuran antar pelajar dan tindakan kekerasan oleh guru terhadap anak didiknya. Gambaran pendidikan yang muram tersebut disebabkan, antara lain, belum terbentuknya sikap kebersamaan pada warga sekolah, khususnya anak didik. Dalam menyikapi pembentukan sikap kebersamaan pada anak didik, maka salah satu solusinya adalah mengintegrasikan nilai-nilai cinta pada proses pembelajaran. Pada penelitian ini, kajian utamanya adalah mengintegrasikan nilai-nilai cinta pada proses pembelajaran bahasa Inggris sehingga diharapkan mampu membentuk sikap kebersamaan sesuai salah satu pilar pendidikan yang dicetuskan oleh UNESCO, learn to live together. Rancangan penelitian yang digunakan adalah Research and Development Design (R&D), yang bertujuan untuk mengembangkan model awal pembelajaran bahasa. Pada rancangan ini, populasi yang digunakan adalah guru-guru Bahasa Inggris yang telah mengajarkan Bahasa Inggris lebih daripada 15 tahun dan telah lulus sertifikasi guru. Sampel penelitian ini adalah dua orang guru yang mengajar di kelas XI dan XII RSBI. Pada rancangan R&D, teknik pengumpulan data melalui observasi, wawancara dan dokumentasi, dimana peneliti adalah isntrumen utama (key instrument). Data yang diperoleh melalui observasi, wawancara dan dokumentasi tersebut dianalisis dengan mendeskripsikannya. Lokasi penelitian adalah SMAN 2 Pontianak yang status Rintisan Sekolah bertaraf Internasional (RSBI) sehingga menerapkan bahasa Inggris dan bahasa Indonesia (bilingual) sebagai bahasa pengantar/instruksional. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa pendidikan akhlak dan peningkatan kemampuan berbahasa Inggris telah tertuang dalam visi dan misi sekolah yang disinergikan dengan status sekolah sebagai RSBI. Proses sosialisasi pendidikan nilai dilakukan melalui kata-kata bijak yang dituliskan pada papan-papan kecil dan ditempelkan pada gerbang masuk, pintu-pintu masuk kelas dan tiang-tiang di sekolah. Pengembangan model integrasi nilai-nilai cinta difokuskan pada pengembangan silabus dan RPP serta bahan ajar. Nilai-nilai cinta yang menjadi fokus pada setiap pembelajaran harus dinyatakan secara tertulis pada silabus dan RPP serta bahan ajar yang sesuai. Dari hasil penelitian ini direkomendasikan agar pihak sekolah selalu berupaya mengembangkan pembelajaran yang berbasiskan nilai-nilai cinta, sebuah media pembangunan karakter dan pengembangan penidikan nilai. Untuk memaksimalkan pemahaman guru tentang model pendidikan bahasa Inggris yang terintegrasi dengan nilai-nilai cinta, maka perlu adanya pelatihan yang berkesinambunga

    Exploring Teaching Learning Process in Developing Higher Order Thinking Skill (HOTS) to Higher Secondary School (SMA) Students in Pontianak

    This study focuses on the Teaching Learning (TL) process in developing Higher Order Thinking Skill to SMA Students which is done by the secondary school teachers in Pontianak City. The National Curriculum, namely, Curriculum 2013, well known by its' abbreviation C-13, has got some significant revisions. Among those revisions, the aspect of critical thinking which emphasizes higher order thinking skill (HOTS) became the concern. The curriculum has arranged the procedures and principles of HOTS. As mentioned that the C-13 should be in line with the global competencies, thus, the teachers should understand and implement them in their teaching process. Thus, in this study, the researcher intends to explore the teachers’ knowledge and how the implementation of curriculum 2013 in the teaching-learning process. In exploring these matters, the main instrument used is questionnaires. The questionnaires contained 21 items which were focused on exploring teachers’ current knowledge about curriculum 2013, the implementation of a teaching-learning process and understood the procedures of HOTS. There were 31 English teachers as the subject of this study. The results show that (1) understand vision and mission of C-13 (73%, (2) implementing a process of HOTS (36%), (3) understand characteristics of critical thinking (55%) and (4) understand models of teaching (45%). Thus, the knowledge about C-13 with its principles on HOTS is averagely good

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Abstract: Language is primarily speech. This paper discusses discourse markers. They are used for various purposes like to create a smooth flow of thoughts and to make the interlocutors easily understand. This way is supposed to be handy in improving the speaking ability. The data were collected from a sitcom entitled ‘Friends’. They were analyzed in a descriptive and qualitative method. The data were classified and then described their function contextually. There are seventeen discourse markers encountered in sitcom. Yeah is the most discourse marker used and by the way is the least discourse marker used in the sitcom. Discourse markers are used to make the language of conversation to be natural. They are useful for the students to learn Thus, the use of discourse markers should be inserted and learned in the textbook for high schools. Cara ini diharapkan dapat berguna dalam usaha meningkatkan kemampuan berbicara. Data yang dikumpulkan berasal dari film serial pendek berjudul ‘Friends’. Data tersebut dianalisa dengan menggunakan metode deskriptif dan kualitatif. Data tersebut kemudian diklasifikasi dan dipaparkan berdasarkan fungsinya. Ada tujuh belas ‘discourse markers’ yang ditemukan di dalam serial tersebut. ‘Yeah’ adalah ‘discourse marker’ yang paling banyak digunakan sedangkan ‘by the way’ adalah ‘discourse marker’ yang paling sedikit digunakan dalam serial tersebut. ‘Discourse markers’ digunakan dalam percakapan agar komunikasi dapat berlangsung lebih alami. Hal ini berguna bagi para siswa untuk dipelajari. Oleh karena itu, penggunaan ‘discourse markers’ seharusnya dimasukkan dan dipelajari di dalam buku pelajaran untuk tingkat atas (SMA).     Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     THE USE OF STORY BOOK “PEEWEE AT THE FARM” IN INTRODUCING ENGLISH TO KINDERGARTEN

    Abstract. This research was conducted in Level B kindergarten students at TK Kristen Immanuel I Pontianak which is located at JL. Gajah Mada No. 250, Pontianak, Kalimantan Barattoprove that the use of story book “Pee Wee at the Farm” is an effective way to introduce English.In collecting the data, the researcher used qualitative and quantitative assessment by using interview and observation sheet as the qualitative assessment, and oral test as the quantitative assessment where the students were asked some questions and repeated them.In the result it can be found that introducing English to kindergarten students using story book “Pee Wee at the Farm” was an effective way to attract and motivate the students’ interest in English.It was shown that all of the 20 students got the extraordinary score, means that the students were able to repeat and understand more than 7 simple sentences taught based on the story book. There were 18 students got the perfect score, means that the students were able to repeat and understand all 10 simple English sentences. There was only one student that was able to repeat and understand 7 sentences and only one student that was able for 8 sentences. Keywords: English Story Book, Introduce, Effectiveness.   Abstrak. Penelitian ini dilaksanakan pada siswa taman kanak-kanak Tingkat B TK Immanuel I yang terletak di Jl. Gajah Mada No. 250, Pontianak Kalimantan Barat untuk membuktikan bahwa penggunaan buku “Pee Wee at the Farm” adalah sebuah cara yang efektif untuk memperkenalkan bahasa Inggris. Dalam mengumpulkan data, peneliti menggunakan penilaian kualitatif dan kuantitatif dengan menggunakan lembat wawancara dan observasi sebagai penilaian kualitatif, dan uji oral sebagai penilaian kuantitatif dimana siswa ditanyakan dan diminta mengulangi materi. Hasil yang ditemukan adalah bahwa memperkenalkan bahasa Inggris kepada siswa taman kanak-kanak menggunakan buku cerita “Pee Wee at the Farm” adalah sebuah cara yang efektif untuk menarik dan memotivasi ketertarikan siswa pada bahasa Inggris. Ditunjukkan bahwa ke-20 siswa memperoleh nilai diatas rata-rata, dimana mereka mampu mengulang dan memahami lebih dari 7 sampel kalimat sederhana yang diajarkan dari buku cerita tersebut. Ada 18 siswa memperoleh nilai sempurna, yaitu mereka yang mampu mengulangi dan memahami 10 kalimat Inggris sederhana. Hanya ada 1 siswa yang mampu mengulangi dan memahami 7 kalimat.   Kata kunci : Buku Bahasa Inggris, Mengenalkan, Efektifita
