Ritgerðin er lokuðTitle: The Luxembourg Film Industry seen through the lens of Porter’s theories on competition and performance. Author: Ragna Arny Larusdottir Advisor: Bjarni Jonsson Institute: Bifrost University Course: Master Thesis in International Business – 30 credits Purpose: The purpose of this study is to extract the key success factors for a Luxembourg Film Company by doing analysis of the Luxembourg film industry. Methodology: This master thesis is a case study of the local film industry in Luxembourg also within the greater context of European and World film markets. Qualitative, statistical and literary data was used. The information from the research was then put into analytical frameworks of Michael E. Porter in order to get a clear picture on the industry from different perspectives. Summary: The Luxembourg film industry has been busy mostly with coproductions in the last 20 years. A new generation of local filmmakers has emerged and they want their films to be seen beyond the borders of Luxembourg. In this assessment on the Luxembourg and European film industry it becomes apparent that competition has focused more on the funding institutes than the audience. This is due to the fact that films are almost fully financed through various film fund systems rather than by admissions revenue. By using the information from the analysis, suggestions are made on both firm level and government level on what changes could help to bring the films of the future closer iv to the audience as well as how to enhance the industry environment for maximum efficiency

The Hospital of Thinkable Boundaries: Methods for Noetic Design

The Hospital of Thinkable Boundaries: Methods for Noetic Design; addresses how the modern city and knowledge-context deals with mental illness and healing. Rather than studying medical spaces this research stems from personal evidence of embetterment through the noetic experience, where productive and vital experience is materialized by the ingestion of psychedelic/synaesthetic compounds. By studying and experiencing non-western/shamanic healing practices where these mind altering plant medicines are culturally integrated, the research on the noetic concerns topics of perception, cognition, body, collectivity and ecology. The design methods derived is what is called situated design, where the personal, material and the situated becomes the main directionality for design; a layered architectural method that concerns the following: (i) the dialogue between the material and the immaterial context, (ii) the notion of liminality, and how to respond to binary opposition through approaching the threshold as process, this also inquires approaching architecture as process, as an event ontology, materializing this sense of continuity, ritual, agency and intentionality (iii) the body as mediator, where the main method is about getting insight into the immediate context and relation through bodily experience. The design proposal The Hospital of Thinkable Boundaries is a system of healing interventions on the site in Skanstull, Stockholm, a liminal place in the city and an abandoned train track where modern vernacular interventions of awareness and healing relates to the material symbol of the industrial locomotive. The proposal includes seven interventions relating to the shamanic ritual of healing where the ceremony is the main spatial and perceptual experience, but it also includes the production of the psychedelic compounds, as well as functions that relates to the cleansing and preparation of the body before entering the ceremony. These additional spaces becomes a means of extending and rethinking the shamanic ritual in an urban modern context, intending to bridge between knowledge-contexts and cultures.Architecture, Urbanism and Building Sciences | Borders and Territorie

Welcome to my Bubble: Designing the interaction between pedestrian, autonomous vehicle and the city at cross walk

    No full text
In a future where most of our transit system consists of autonomous vehicle, the question is raised how we as humans interact and communicate with them, and they with us. This project explores these interactions in the current time to uncover how humans interact and negotiate in traffic. More specifically how pedestrians do so. From the analysis it came forward that such interactions are mainly based on implicit communications – messages sent through behavioural cues that are not necessarily meant as a message. This contradicts the belief that humans use mostly explicit communications such as eye contact and gestures to communicate with fellow traffic participants. The disappearance of the driver might thus not have as much of an impact of the effectivity with which we humans can communicate with autonomous vehicles. However, many research currently study how more explicit communication tools, such as external human machine interfaces (eHMI) on the vehicle can help the pedestrian in making their decision to cross. These studies do find that there is a slight benefit to these eHMI systems, however they are not as significant as one might hope. eHMI systems also present several concerns including their visibility from afar, ambiguity and one sided communication. Especially that last concern is one that is central in this project. The process follows the guidelines of the Vision in Product design process, which explores current day interactions and context to then formulate a vision for the future. Based on this future and the gained insights a design statement is formulated that contains the goal to be fulfilled by the final design. The goal defined in this project is as follows: designing a cross walk that prioritises pedestrian transit while maintaining an efficient interaction between autonomous vehicle and the pedestrian. The final design proposal presents a cross walk that uses animations that come to life through lights integrated in the floor tiles. The cross walk is unique in its design as it extends onto the side walk to allow pedestrians to consciously show their intention to cross towards the autonomous vehicle. The cross walk is able to register the pedestrian. Since the cross walk registers the pedestrian early on, it can send a signal to the autonomous vehicle to slow down to give the pedestrian the right of way. The pedestrian receives feedback that shows them how safe it is for them to cross through the use of these animations. A series of animations have been designed and evaluated and based on the results a final set of animations has been designed. These animations will communicate that is either safe or not safe for the pedestrian to cross. As such, the pedestrian is able to actively communicate with the autonomous vehicle and receives personal feedback, instead of being told what to do by the autonomous vehicle what to do. Bringing both their different communication bubbles together and translating them through the cross walk so both understand what the other will do.Integrated Product Desig

The mammalian TRIM-NHL protein TRIM71/LIN-41 is a repressor of mRNA function

TRIM-NHL proteins are conserved regulators of development and differentiation but their molecular function has remained largely elusive. Here, we report an as yet unrecognized activity for the mammalian TRIM-NHL protein TRIM71 as a repressor of mRNAs. We show that TRIM71 is associated with mRNAs and that it promotes translational repression and mRNA decay. We have identified Rbl1 and Rbl2, two transcription factors whose down-regulation is important for stem cell function, as TRIM71 targets in mouse embryonic stem cells. Furthermore, one of the defining features of TRIM-NHL proteins, the NHL domain, is necessary and sufficient to target TRIM71 to RNA, while the RING domain that confers ubiquitin ligase activity is dispensable for repression. Our results reveal strong similarities between TRIM71 and Drosophila BRAT, the best-studied TRIM-NHL protein and a well-documented translational repressor, suggesting that BRAT and TRIM71 are part of a family of mRNA repressors regulating proliferation and differentiatio

The project is divided in two, on one hand there is an educational website where students and teachers can in a simple way learn how to make good presentations (20 ECTS) and on the other there is this report where the educational website gets its’ academic support (10 ECTS). The educational website is structured so that it is useful to both students and teachers. The goal is that students can use it on their own and that the teachers can use presentations in their teaching without having to add much preparation in their work. On the website you can find, among other things, project descriptions that are suitable for groupwork, couples work and single work, clever ways to put students in groups, how to gather material for the presentation and evaluation papers. Also available on the website you can find practical information about open software to use when making presentations. Finally, you can view content regarding speaking and presenting. The report describes the ideas behind the website and it’s academic value for schools. A lot of emphasis is put on the Icelandic curriculum and how it shapes the material. The purpose of the website, the making of educational material, information technology in school and more that the author considered was important is discussed. The ideas on the website were gathered through surfing the Internet and all the software was tested by the author before it was published. The goal is that the website will be useful to students and teachers in the school platform and that it will be a tool that is easy to grab when needed. Making and performing presentations should be a big part of school and information technology should be mixed in all studies. The author hopes that with this project those aspects will be reinforced

Direct protein-protein interaction of 11 beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 1 and hexose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase in the endoplasmic reticulum lumen

Hexose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (H6PDH) has been shown to stimulate 11 beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 1 (11 beta-HSD1)-dependent local regeneration of active glucocorticoids. Here, we show that coexpression with H6PDH results in a dramatic shift from 11 beta-HSD1 oxidase to reductase activity without affecting the activity of the endoplasmic reticular enzyme 17 beta-HSD2. Immunoprecipitation experiments revealed coprecipitation of H6PDH with 11 beta-HSD1 but not with the related enzymes 11 beta-HSD2 and 17 beta-HSD2, suggesting a specific interaction between H6PDH and 11 beta-HSD1. The use of the 11 beta-HSD1/11 beta-HSD2 chimera indicates that the N-terminal 39 residues of 11 beta-HSD1 are sufficient for interaction with H6PDH. An important role of the N-terminus was indicated further by the significantly stronger interaction of 11 beta-HSD1 mutant Y18-21A with H6PDH compared to wild-type 11 beta-HSD1. The protein-protein interaction and the involvement of the N-terminus of 11 beta-HSD1 were confirmed by Far-Western blotting. Finally, fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) measurements of HEK-293 cells expressing fluorescently labeled proteins provided evidence for an interaction between 11 beta-HSD1 and H6PDH in intact cells. Thus, using three different methods, we provide strong evidence that the functional coupling between 11 beta-HSD1 and H6PDH involves a direct physical interaction of the two proteins.
