Immigrant Entrepreneurship in Finland: Challenges of Small-Scale Restaurant Startup
Get PDFThe term of entrepreneurship has been recognised and increasing awareness in Finland among policy makers and media since the recession in the early 1990’s. Finland is one of the most innovation and technology-driven economies in the world, with highly viable competitive markets and ranked 17 as ease of doing business globally. Finland continues to be a more viable, competitive and business-friendly economy with the well-operational support system for entrepreneurship. The country needs immigrants to address the predicted skills shortage, improve the dependency ratio and radically change the economic structure and the labour market. Entrepreneurship is also becoming an increasingly important employment path for the immigrant population. Immigrants are already establishing more companies than the rest of the population, especially in the Helsinki Metropolitan Area. Through immigrant entrepreneurship the market gains international resources, new ideas, approaches and more business, and that boosts the economy of the whole country. Entrepreneurship is also an excellent way of gaining access to the Finnish society.
The purpose of the study was to explore the initial challenges of immigrant entrepreneurs with establishing small-scale restaurant businesses in Finland and study how to overcome those challenges. The theoretical framework was created around the elements that were relevant to the topic. It gave a good base for the creation of the interview questions. The empirical research was implemented by using the qualitative approach. Five immigrant entrepreneurs from Jyväskylä, Finland were interviewed, and they were selected based on their small-scale restaurant business establishment experience and successful business operations during the past few years.
According to the results, the main challenges with establishing a small-scale restaurant business by an immigrant entrepreneur was acquiring training, adequate information and skills, initial capital /finance, lack of language skills, reliable, qualified and affordable workforce, governmental bureaucracy and financial reporting. Those challenges can be overcome with previous work experience, undertaking franchise business operations and social help from friends and families in financial affairs as well as learning the host-country language in school or university. Working overtime in the restaurant could be reduced by hiring employees, and it is very important to have bookkeeper and accountant services related to financial reporting and governmental bureaucracy. The author’s recommendation for further research is studying business failures of immigrant entrepreneurs in Finland and expanding the study to different locations in Finland with larger population samples

Small molecule tyrosine kinase inhibitors in pancreatic cancer
No full textSachin Gupta, Bassel F El-RayesDepartment of Hematology/Oncology, Karmanos Cancer Institute, Wayne State University, MI, USAAbstract: Pancreatic cancer has proven to be chemo-resistant, with gemcitabine being the only cytotoxic agent approved for advanced pancreatic cancer since 1996. Tyrosine kinase inhibitors represent a newer generation of chemotherapeutic agents targeting specific tumor pathways associated with carcinogenesis including cell cycle control, signal transduction, apoptosis and angiogenesis. These agents present a more selective way of treating pancreatic cancer. Erlotinib is the prototype of the tyrosine kinase inhibitors with proven efficacy in advanced pancreatic cancer and has been recently approved in that setting. Multiple other tyrosine kinase inhibitors targeting the VEGFR, PDGFR, and Src kinases are in various phases of clinical trials testing. The preliminary results of these trials have been disappointing. Current challenges in pancreatic cancer clinical trials testing include improving patient selection, identifying effective combinations, improving the predictive value of current preclinical models and better study designs. This review summarizes the present clinical development of tyrosine kinase inhibitors in pancreatic cancer and strategies for future drug development.Keywords: pancreatic cancer, erlotinib, tyrosine kinase inhibitor
Additive Manufacturing and Green Information Systems as Technological Capabilities for Firm Performance
No full textGiven the importance of environmental objectives, companies are continuously trying to achieve them through different means and technologies are not an exception. Companies are increasingly using information systems (soft side) coupled with manufacturing (hard side) technologies to achieve market and operational performance. Therefore, this study investigates the role of green information systems (GIS) and additive manufacturing (AM) in the market and operational performance achievement of an organization. This study explores if the role of GIS and AM is influenced by firm size and number of employees in the organization with the lens of organizational information processing theory. Through survey instrument, data from 211 respondents are collected and analysis is performed using structural equation modelling. Findings indicate that GIS is critical to overall performance as compared to AM. In addition, top management facilitates extension of business activities significantly as compared to internal operations. Control orientation works best for new technologies like GIS and AM. The study offers an array of scope for theoretical and practical implications to utilize GIS and emerging technologies like AM to achieve greater market and operational performance. Further, the study offers implications for AM and GIS professionals and researchers. The study contributes in integrating manufacturing and information systems to facilitate faster technological and information processing capabilities

1) The netCDF files created through post-processing of full model data in FORTRAN are shared in the /data/ directory. These file contains the zonal mean circulation statistics based on Gupta et al. (2020), age-of-air transport diagnostics based on Linz et al. (2021), and the novel \Gamma-\Theta circulation streamfunction introduced in this study. The /data/ directory also contains MATLAB .mat data files for the transport diagnostics obtained from WACCM. 150 days of actual GFDL-FV3 model data in the northern hemisphere, between 0.1 hPa-500 hPa pressure levels is also provided to support external computations and validation.
2) The Jupyter notebook used for final computation and figures production is provided in .ipynb, .html and .pdf formats in /code/. All the files referred to in the notebook are stored in the /data/ directory.
