Entangled Mobilities in the Transnational Salsa Circuit. The Esperanto of the Body, Gender and Ethnicity

    No full text
With attention to the transnational dance world of salsa, this book explores the circulation of people, imaginaries, dance movements, conventions and affects from a transnational perspective. Through interviews and ethnographic, multi-sited research in several European cities and Havana, the author draws on the notion of "entangled mobilities" to show how the intimate gendered and ethnicised moves on the dance floor relate to the cross-border mobility of salsa dance professionals and their students. A combination of research on migration and mobility with studies of music and dance, Entangled Mobilities in the Transnational Salsa Circuit contributes to the fields of transnationalism, mobility and dance studies, thus providing a deeper theoretical and empirical understanding of gendered and racialised transnational phenomena. As such it will appeal to scholars across the social sciences with interests in migration, cultural studies and gender studies

Effects of biochar application on Suaeda salsa growth and saline soil properties

    No full text
Pot experiments were conducted to study the effects of biochar application rates (5, 10, 20 g/kg) and types of wheat straw biochar (WS), corn stalk biochar (CS) and peanut shell biochar (PS) on Suaeda salsa (S. salsa) growth and properties of saline soil in Yellow River Delta. It was found that S. salsa yield increased from 11.7 to 115 % under WS application at a range of 5-10 g/kg compared with control. As biochar rate increased to 20 g/kg, the increment decreased to 102 %. The underground biomass of S. salsa only increased at 20 g/kg rate. The S. salsa growth respond to biochar followed the order of PS > WS > CS. Biochar application generally reduced saline soil pH and the effect was more obvious for WS. The content of total organic matter increased significantly at biochar rate of 10-20 g/kg. WS at higher application rate (20 g/kg) significantly increased available phosphorus content. At the same time, CS increased more available phosphorus content while PS decreased more of exchange sodium percentage. In generally, biochar application improved saline soil quality and enhanced plant growth although these effects should be tested in long-term period

Homologous cloning, characterization and expression of a new halophyte phytochelatin synthase gene in Suaeda salsa

The halophyte Suaeda salsa can grow in heavy metal-polluted areas along intertidal zones having high salinity. Since phytochelatins can effectively chelate heavy metals, it was hypothesized that S. salsa possessed a phytochelatin synthase (PCS) gene. In the present study, the cDNA of PCS was obtained from S. salsa (designated as SsPCS) using homologous cloning and the rapid amplification of cDNA ends (RACE). A sequence analysis revealed that SsPCS consisted of 1 916 bp nucleotides, encoding a polypeptide of 492 amino acids with one phytochelatin domain and one phytochelatin C domain. A similarity analysis suggested that SsPCS shared up to a 58.6% identity with other PCS proteins and clustered with PCS proteins from eudicots. There was a new kind of metal ion sensor motif in its C-terminal domain. The SsPCS transcript was more highly expressed in elongated and fibered roots and stems (P < 0.05) than in leaves. Lead and mercury exposure significantly enhanced the mRNA expression of SsPCS (P < 0.05). To the best of our knowledge, SsPCS is the second PCS gene cloned from a halophyte, and it might contain a different metal sensing capability than the first PCS from Thellungiella halophila. This study provided a new view of halophyte PCS genes in heavy metal tolerance

This study aims to examine the relationship between the understanding of social justice values and gender stereotype attitudes toward women. The research was conducted in RW 12, Tanah Tinggi Subdistrict, Central Jakarta, using a correlational quantitative approach. The sample consisted of 97 male respondents aged 18–25 years, selected using purposive sampling based on the Lameshow formula. Data were collected through tests and questionnaires. Instrument testing results showed 35 valid and 5 invalid items for the variable of understanding social justice values (X), and 28 valid and 2 invalid items for the variable of gender stereotype attitudes (Y). The reliability values obtained through Cronbach’s Alpha were 0.975 for variable X and 0.981 for variable Y, indicating that both instruments are reliable. The prerequisite analysis showed that both variables were normally distributed (p = 0.075) and linearly related (p = 0.115). Hypothesis testing using simple linear regression produced the equation Y = 97.181 – 0.284X, indicating that every one-unit increase in variable X would result in a 0.284-unit decrease in variable Y. The Pearson Product Moment correlation test showed a strong negative relationship between the understanding of social justice values and gender stereotype attitudes toward women, with a correlation coefficient of r = -0.679. Furthermore, the coefficient of determination showed that the understanding of social justice values contributed 46.2% to gender stereotype attitudes toward women, while the remaining 53.8% was influenced by other factors outside the scope of this study. These findings indicate that there is a strong and negative relationship between the understanding of social justice values and gender stereotype attitudes toward women

    No full text
This thesis investigates Brasil’s Nightclub, a Philadelphia salsa club, as a site at which notions of Latino/a identity are produced and performed. Research for the thesis was conducted over the course of five months and was ethnographic in nature. From February 2016 until June 2016, the author attended Brasil’s Nightclub and collected participant observations and interviews. Findings reveal how the club accommodates multiple conflicting narratives of Latino/a identity and how these narratives are embodied through salsa dance practices.Danc

Review Of Spinning Mambo Into Salsa: Caribbean Dance In Global Commerce By J. McMains

    No full text
McMains\u27s first book, Glamour Addiction: Inside the American Ballroom Dance Industry (CH, Jul\u2707, 44-6162), won the Congress on Research in Dance\u27s Outstanding Publication in Dance Research award. In this second book McMains (Univ. of Washington, Seattle) focuses on the evolution of mambo and salsa in New York, Los Angeles, and Miami, emphasizing the history and shifts of salsa in each locale from the 1940s to the present. She notes that her major focus is comparing 1950s mambo to millennial salsa. McMains anchors her work in her own extensive experience as a salsa practitioner and in her interviews with more than a hundred dancers who represent a wide range of ages and approaches to the forms. Drawing on archival and ethnographic research, the author traces salsa’s migration history in the US and investigates the relationship between local and global developments. Deftly partnering her physical dancing presence with her theoretical investigations, the author poses significant questions regarding the competing perspectives of national and commercial interests relative to salsa. In addition, she looks into how issues of racial discrimination and gender identity are negotiated through the dance, and what the interactions and shared influences are between staged and social settings. Summing Up: Highly recommended. Upper-division undergraduates through faculty
