Detective fiction in Cuban society and culture.
PhDThe object of this thesis is to reach towards an understanding of Cuban society through a
study of its detective fiction and more particularly contemporary Cuban society through
the novels of the author and critic, Leonardo Padura Fuentes.
The method has been to trace the development of Cuban detective writing and to
read Padura Fuentes in the light of the work of twentieth century Western European
literary critics and philosophers including Raymond Williams, Antonio Gramsci, Terry
Eagleton, Roland Barthes, Jean Paul Sartre, Michel Foucault, Jean François Lyotard and
Jean Baudrillard in order to gain a better understanding of the social and historical
context from which this genre emerged.
By concentrating on the literary texts, I have explored readings which lead out into
an analysis of the broader philosophical, political and historical issues raised by the
Cuban revolution. Since it deals primarily with modes of deviance and notions of legality
and justice within the context of the modern state, detective fiction is particularly well
suited to this type of investigation. The intention is to show how this is as valid in the
Cuban context as it is in advanced capitalist societies where such research has already
been carried out with some success.
The thesis comprises an introduction, ten chapters and a conclusion. The chapters
are divided into three sections. Chapters 1 to 3 attempt a broad theoretical, historical and
socio-political analysis of the cultural reality within which the Cuban revolutionary
detective genre emerged. Chapters 4 to 6 analyse the Cuban detective narrative from its
inception in the early part of the twentieth century until the emergence of Leonardo
Padura Fuentes as the foremost exponent of the genre in Cuba after 1991. Chapters 7-
10 concentrate upon the work of Leonardo Padura Fuentes, offering a reading of his
detective tetralogy informed by the preceding discussion.
The contribution made by the thesis to knowledge of the subject is to build upon the
work of Seymour Menton and Amelia S. Simpson on the development of the Cuban
detective novel and to provide analyses of the pre-Revolutionary Cuban detective
narrative and the work of Leonardo Padura Fuentes for the first time in the English
language. The thesis concludes that the study of this popular genre in Cuba is of crucial
importance to the scholar who wishes to reach as full an understanding of the social
dynamics within that society as possible. In particular, it proves that Cuban detective
fiction provides a useful barometer of social change which records the shifts in the Cuban
Zeitgeist that have taken place over the past century
This dissertation brings up questions about the experience of writing, beyond the institutional character of authorship provided by the Author Function. By analyzing #speeches of the self# by writers and aspiring writers, it proposes a debate on the constitution of the writing subject: a subject that constitutes itself from its own writing, taking on (or not) different positions regarding writing institutions. The study of this possible constitution of the writing subject focuses on three changes made by writers during their writing experiences, corresponding to: (1) the beginner (changing from non-writer to writer), (2) the writer to be acclaimed (changing from writer to author), and (3) the writer at the end of his/her writing activity, the one who gives up writing (changing from writer/author to non-writer). Through autobiographical texts, a writer goes beyond his/her narrated fictions, and testifies his/her appearance as a writing subject, in permanent change, always transforming and creating him/herself. In a movement of subjectivation of the self, he/she writes in order to know what he/she would write if he/she wrote (as Marguerite Duras would say). Thus, the writer becomes another one by writing what he/she writes, by the faith in a writing subject the transforms his/her own life in an aesthetic existence, in a way of life
English
This book is an attempt to understand Jorge Luis Borges’s ideas about tango by going beyond an opposition the author himself created in his writing. In spite of being Argentinean, Borges frequently complained about the excessive local color, the exaggerated emotions, and the histrionic performances associated with this musical form. At the same time, he declared he had witnessed, in his childhood, the execution of a different form of tango, more brave and epic, more sober and simple. The world of this primitive tango is a recurrence in Borges’s writing.
The particularities of this recurrence are the subject of this analysis. It proposes that tango does not emerge in Borges’s works only as an occasional subject, but as a complex, sometimes unconscious, logic of writing. Words, images, gestures, and ways of thinking and telling stories that were learned in the world of the primitive tango infiltrate Borges’s texts even when he is not writing about Argentinean subjects. Tango then, becomes primitive also in the sense that it provides a primordial language with which Borges’s writing is capable to narrate, with the same effectiveness, petty crimes in the outskirts of Buenos Aires, or remote Germanic sagas. The challenge, then, is not to point out that tango is present in Borges’s writing, but the opposite: to understand how and to what extent the words and logic of tango underlie the language with which Borges’s writing describes and interprets the world.

The roads that separate writers often end with a paradox, happy proximity. The nominations for the Nobel Prize for literature in 1979 came together, as in a real literary constellation, Italo Calvino, Alberto Moravia, Giorgio Bassani, Vittorio Sereni, Leonardo Sciascia and Mario Luzi, along with the argentine Jorge Luis Borges. The list reflects the richness and variety of Italian literature of the time. But beyond the storytellers, the coincidence of Luzi and Borges (and we might add, that of Odisseas Elytis, who was finally awarded the prize) is a unique convergence of poets, with very different poetics, but with intense communicating vessels that unite them, often invisible and contradictory manner. While Borges never wrote about Luzi, the italian, however, did, and quite often, on the argentine, not only from the pages of literary criticism in «Il Corriere della Sera», space occupied until 1974 commenting Latin American literature (he has written about Roberto Arlt, Vargas Llosa and Juan Rulfo, among other writers), but in different interviews, where the frequent quotations that Luzi makes about Borges often installed a space for discussion and profound differences not only on the nature of poetry, but on the same link with the world and life. We propose to study these reflections that Mario Luzi made from (and on many occasions, against) about the Argentine author, from the critical work of the Florentine poet, on the centenary of his birth

Abstract : Facing the crisis of the #Social State#, Habermas discusses the role of the paradigm of the right, guiding his reflection to the relation between the Rule of Law and democracy, in order to establish the necessity of a new paradigm of right that can overcome the opposition between the liberal paradigm and the social paradigm, because the first does not find any possibility of return due to the structural changes in the society and the second has a paternalist function that becomes a problem to the self-determination of the individuals. In this sense, the new procedural paradigm of right must be capable to guarantee through the public use of reason, the individual autonomy as well the public autonomy of the citizens, enabling resolutions that occur from the own opinion and will of the concerned who are considered free and equal and that should establish in each case, through intersubjective and communicative practices the validity of the rules
