Extracting cold energy from back-filled zones to pre-freeze new mining zones in Canadian uranium mines: numerical modeling and experimental validation
Abstract: Athabasca basin in northern Saskatchewan is the home to high-grade uranium ores – known as the Saudi Arabia of the uranium world. McArthur River and Cigar Lake mines are two underground mines located in the Athabasca basin in northern Saskatchewan. Due to high uranium content and weak ground structure, the uranium ore is extracted using special mining techniques, namely raise boring in McArthur River and jet boring in Cigar Lake mine, in which the ground/orebodies need to be frozen before it is excavated. The artificial ground freezing (AGF) system employs a refrigeration plant to produce brine (calcium chloride) at -30?C to freeze the ground by pumping it to the coaxial/bayonet tube heat exchangers installed in the drill holes. As the mine progresses, orebody in the old zones depletes, and new zones need to be developed. The depleted zone typically had been frozen for several years, for which ground temperature reaches close to brine temperature. This paper explores a novel idea of extracting “coolth” energy from the depleted zones to pre-freeze new zones. This could potentially shorten the overall freezing time in the new zone and reduce overall energy consumption and its associated carbon footprint. The concept is tested using a laboratory-scale AGF facility at McGill University. A mathematical model is also developed and validated against experimental data. The model is then used to simulate mine field conditions. The results suggest that the pre-freezing technique can shorten the total freezing time from 9 to 7 months with potential energy savings of up to 37%. Future work will focus on design improvement, techno-economic analysis, and possible implementation.Communication présentée lors du congrès international tenu conjointement par Canadian Society for Mechanical Engineering (CSME) et Computational Fluid Dynamics Society of Canada (CFD Canada), à l’Université de Sherbrooke (Québec), du 28 au 31 mai 2023
Ventilation and cooling comparison between diesel and electric mining equipment
Underground mines are faced with economic and health challenges that urge them to move away from diesel equipment and towards electric equipment. However, the effects of such a transition in the design of the underground mine ventilation are yet to be thoroughly understood. The current study underlines how the full replacement of a diesel fleet with an electric fleet will affect ventilation, cooling demand, and relative costs in a conceptual underground metal mine situated in the Northern hemisphere. It focuses on the significance of heat generating mechanisms which contribute to the overall heat load of the mining operation. The study differentiates the significance of heat from auto-compression, machinery, and strata in full transition scenarios. The study includes the simulation of the heating load emitted from auto-compression, diesel, and electric equipment at a conceptual mine site in the Northern hemisphere by the software VentSIM, and ClimSIM. The assessment of the resulting cooling demand is carried out in two steps. The first step is a heating load simulation of the materials handling system of the mine required to reach the maximum daily production rate that has been carried out for two types of scenarios including sole diesel, and solely electric engines. The second step is a simulation of the associated cooling demands of the ventilation network for these two scenarios. The results of the study show that shifting from a diesel fleet to an electric equipment can have moderate to significant impacts, depending on the intensity of equipment utilization, surface conditions, depth and extent of the operations, and geothermal gradient.
Instrumen yang digunakan adalah Wordl Health Oranization Quality of Life (WHOQOL-Breef).
Analisis yang digunakan adalah uji Spearman Rho. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa kadar
kreatini penderita gagal ginjal sebagian besar tinggi (62,2%) dan kualittas hidup penderita
sebagian besar rendah (62,2%).

Simulation of an open-loop, packed-bed pumped thermal electricity storage system
Abstract: A Pumped Thermal Electricity Storage system is described with an open-loop architecture, using packed bed sensible heat energy storage without heat exchangers. Operating strategies are proposed to achieve a reasonable storage utilisation factor while respecting practical limits for off-design operation of the compressors and expanders. A model of the packed bed behaviour has been developed using one-dimensional packed bed simulation techniques. The initial results serve as a preliminary validation of the technical concept, and the model can serve a foundation for parametric optimisation in future work.Communication présentée lors du congrès international tenu conjointement par Canadian Society for Mechanical Engineering (CSME) et Computational Fluid Dynamics Society of Canada (CFD Canada), à l’Université de Sherbrooke (Québec), du 28 au 31 mai 2023
Novel thermosyphon design for underground artificial ground freezing: CFD analysis
Abstract: The Cigar Lake Mine (Saskatchewan, Canada) contains the richest high-grade uranium deposits in the world. Geotechnical concerns and underground water seepage during compels the need for artificial ground freezing (AGF) at a depth of 400-460 meters below the ground surface, where the ore is located and thus called the active zone. The AGF systems are driven by energy intensive refrigeration plants at 300 million dollars annually, which is expected to double in an expansion plan. In this project, we propose an innovative artificial ground freezing technology that runs on sustainable energy resources. Our work improves traditional thermosyphons to meet the needs of underground AGF systems by incorporating air insulation layer in the top passive zone where ground freezing is not needed (which extends for 400 meters in the Cigar Lake Mine) to magnify energy extraction in the active zone. The superior performance of this novel design has been demonstrated mathematically using well-validated lab-scale models based on the conservation principles of mass, momentum, and energy. The results show that the novel design extracts twice the amount of thermal energy as compared to that of traditional thermosyphons. Overall, the proposed thermosyphon design shows great potential as an economic and sustainable alternative for present underground AGF systems.Résumé de la communication présentée lors du congrès international tenu conjointement par Canadian Society for Mechanical Engineering (CSME) et Computational Fluid Dynamics Society of Canada (CFD Canada), à l’Université de Sherbrooke (Québec), du 28 au 31 mai 2023

Optimization of Wavy-Channel Micromixer Geometry Using Taguchi Method
The micro-mixer has been widely used in mixing processes for chemical and pharmaceutical industries. We introduced an improved and easy to manufacture micro-mixer design utilizing the wavy structure micro-channel T-junction which can be easily manufactured using a simple stamping method. Here, we aim to optimize the geometrical parameters, i.e., wavy frequency, wavy amplitude, and width and height of the micro channel by utilizing the robust Taguchi statistical method with regards to the mixing performance (mixing index), pumping power and figure of merit (FoM). The interaction of each design parameter is evaluated. The results indicate that high mixing performance is not always associated with high FoM due to higher pumping power. Higher wavy frequency and amplitude is required for good mixing performance; however, this is not the case for pumping power due to an increase in Darcy friction loss. Finally, the advantages and limitations of the designs and objective functions are discussed in the light of present numerical results
