EFFECT OF DIETARY STARCH LEVEL AND SOURCE ON PERFORMANCE, CAECAL FERMENTATION AND MEAT QUALITY IN GROWING RABBITS

    No full text
[EN] To evaluate the effects of starch level and source on growth performance, caecal fermentation, and carcass and meat quality, six diets were formulated including different percentage of barley (B) or corn (C) or equal proportions of the two cereals (BC) to obtain moderate (M) or high (H) starch levels, and fed to 96 rabbits from 35 d of age until slaughter (73 d). Within starch level, B and C diets presented similar chemical composition and nutritive value while starch digestibility was higher in B diets. The starch source did not affect growth performance and meat quality and showed weak effects on caecal fermentation, apart from a higher proportion of valerate in rabbits fed diets C (P<0.05). According to cereal inclusion rate, M diets were lower in starch (17.0 vs 20.6% DM) and digestible energy concentration (12.1 vs 12.6 MJ/kg DM) and higher in fibre concentration (ADL: 4.7 vs 3.9% DM) than H diets. The starch level affected growth performance: H diets stimulated weight gain (41.7 vs 43.5 g/d; P<0.05) and improved feed conversion (P<0.001) in comparison with M diets but did not affect health status or caecal fermentation. High-starch diets also increased dressing percentage (60.9 vs 61.5%; P<0.05), and cooking losses and share press force of meat.Xiccato, G.; Trocino, A.; Sartori, A.; Queaque, P. (2002). EFFECT OF TRANSPORT DURATION AND GENDER ON RABBIT CARCASS AND MEAT QUALITY

    No full text
[EN] In order to evaluate the effect of transport duration and gender on carcass and meat quality, 204 rabbits were reared in individual cages from 35 d of age until slaughter at 77 d (average live weight at shipping: 2662±189 g). Before slaughter, four groups of rabbits were formed and transported for 2, 4, 6, or 8 hours from the breeding unit to the slaughterhouse. Increasing the duration of transport increased transport losses (2.44% to 4.59%; P<0.001), decreased dressing percentage (59.5% to 58.9%; P<0.01) and increased the redness of the longissimus dorsi muscle (CIE a* 2.38 to 2.73; P<0.05). Commercial carcass grading for colour, conformation and fatness were not affected by transport duration. The effect of gender was appreciable at slaughter: final live weight and transport losses were higher in females than males. Dressing percentage was lower in females (59.1 vs 59.8%; P<0.01) due to the greater gut content. Carcasses of females showed a higher proportion of longissimus muscle (P<0.01). The meat of females was darker (CIE L* of biceps femoris muscle: 54.9 vs 55.9; P<0.01) and less coloured (Chroma index of longissimus lumborum muscle: 3.52 vs 3.87; P<0.05) than males.Trocino, A.; Xiccato, G.; Queaque, P.; Sartori, A. Study on the nutrient adequacy of feeds for pet rabbits available in the Italian market

    No full text
[EN] This study was carried out to determine the proximate composition and nutritional adequacy of six complete commercial feeds for pet rabbits available in the Italian market. Wide variability was observed in the chemical composition of the complete feeds selected. Two feeds exceeded crude protein recommended level (172 g/kg and 182 g/kg), whereas 50% of the diets selected did not meet the minimal crude fibre requirements of 130 g/kg. The estimated digestible energy (DE) showed an oversupply in five feeds, attributable to high starch content (from 195 to 380 g/kg) in four of them. Fat levels resulted adequate in all feeds (between 10 and 50 g/kg), whereas a wide variability was observed in fatty acid (FA) composition. All feeds were deficient in phosphorus (<5 g/kg) and three of them also in calcium (<8 g/kg). All feeds were below the minimal vitamin E requirements (<40 mg/kg). One feed showed an aflatoxin B1 content of 11.36 ¿g/kg which is slightly higher than the European recommended maximum amount of 10 ¿g/kg. The six pet rabbit feeds obtained from the Italian market did not fulfil the nutrient requirements for pet rabbits and feeding animals with these products might produce detrimental health effects in the long term.Ricci, R.; Sartori, A.; Palagiano, C.; Dalle Zotte, A. EVALUATION OF PERFORMANCE AND HEALTH STATUS OF DWARF RABBITS FROM WEANING TO MATURITY

    No full text
This study was carried out to follow the somatic development of dwarf rabbits from weaning to adult age, according to their gender. One hundred and forty five “coloured dwarf” rabbits of six wk of age weighing 514±27 g were used. The animals were housed in individual cages and were fed ad libitum with a commercial pelleted diet. Individual body weight and feed consumption were measured twice a week to determine weight gain, feed intake and feed conversion index. Health status was controlled daily in order to identify animals with reduction in live weight, diarrhoea events, or with teeth problems. At 20 and 45 wk of age the animals’ fatness was evaluated by measuring their skin fold width. From 19 wk of age onwards the live weight of females (F) was significantly higher than that of males (M) (P<0.05). Up to 20 wk of age the feed intake and the weight gain were higher in F than M whereas from 40 wk of age onwards the situation was reversed. At 45 wk of age the skin fold width was significantly higher in M than in F (4.28 vs 3.56 mm, respectively; P<0.001). During the first 20 wk of age 9 rabbits died for digestive problems whereas 13 were excluded for sickness and 5 for overgrowth of teeth. The teeth problems were also seen in other 42 rabbits at the end of the trial but it did not lead to animal’s exclusion. The results showed a clear sex dimorphism in live performances, resulting in higher live weight in F than M at adult age. For this reason feed companies should consider diversified diets according to the gender. The live weight at 45 wk of age exceeded the standard values of the considered dwarf breed

Factors associated with risk of death in hospitalized patients for exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease: an updated scoping review

    No full text
IntroductionThe Exacerbation of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (ECOPD), especially if leading to hospitalization, increases the risk of death. Our scoping review aims to identify updated mortality risk factors for both short- and long-term periods.Areas coveredA comprehensive search, covering the period from January 2013 to February 2024, was performed to identify eligible studies that consider factors associated with death in hospitalized ECOPD. We considered short-term mortality, up to one year (including in-hospital mortality, IHM) and long-term mortality over one year, without time limits. We excluded studies concerning the intensive care area.Expert opinionWe considered 38 studies, 32 and 8 reporting data about short- and long-term mortality, respectively. Two studies consider both periods. Several factors, some already known, others newly identified, have been evaluated and discussed. Some of these were related to the characteristics and severity of COPD (age, body mass index, lung impairment), and some considered the response to ECOPD. In this last context, we focused on the increasing role of biomarkers in predicting the mortality of patients, particularly IHM. Our factors associated with a worse prognosis may be helpful in clinical practice to identify patients at risk and, subsequently, determine a personalized approach

«Tutto ciò risponde alle mie irrequiete aspirazioni» I viaggi di Alba Felter Sartori nella colonia italiana

    No full text
Alba Felter Sartori travelled alone through different Italian colonies in Africa in the 1930s and her travelogue was informed by the fascist ideology. In this paper I argue that the travel becomes for her an occasion of empowerment, since it allows her to perform in ways that in her motherland were not permitted. The colony becomes, in her experience, an occasion to challenge gender rules and her identity. Of equal importance is the fact that writing turns into an opportunity for public acknowledgment
