Gastroesophageal reflux disease: key messages for clinicians
Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a chronic common disorder for which patients often refer to specialists. In the last decades, numerous studies helped to clarify the pathophysiology and the natural history of this disease. Currently, in the clinical setting, GERD is defined by the presence of symptoms that, when endoscopic investigation is required, permit to distinguish between cases with or without associated esophageal mucosal injuries. These conditions are called erosive reflux disease and non-erosive reflux disease (NERD), respectively. The latter is the most common manifestation of GERD. Symptoms are defined typical, as heartburn and regurgitation, and atypical (also called extra-esophageal), as coughing and/or wheezing, hoarseness, sore throat, otitis media, and dental manifestations. In this context, it is crucial for clinicians to investigate the presence of features of suspected malignancy, as unexplained weight loss, anemia, dysphagia, persistent vomiting, familiar history of cancer, long history of GERD, and beginning of GERD symptoms after the age of 50 years. The presence of these risk factors should induce to perform an endoscopic examination. Particular attention should be given to functional conditions that can mimic GERD, such as functional heartburn and hypersensitive esophagus as well as, more rarely, eosinophilic esophagitis. The former ones have different pathophysiology and this explains the frequent non-response to proton pump inhibitor drugs. This narrative review provides to clinicians a useful and practical overview of the state-of-the-art on advancements in the knowledge of GERD. Oceanic sedimentarysequences contain records of geomagnetic paleointensity, as well as cosmogenic nuclide productionrecords, that provide some appropriate time-series of the geomagnetic dipole moment variations,allowing us to extract all frequency modulation laws of it, from algorithms based on the phase of a lineartime-frequency method as the complex wavelet transform.Beyond the fundamental interest for mechanical constraints on the geodynamo, the interest of suchstudies lies in the fact that, at present and for the last 3 millennia, the dipole moment has been decaying byabout 30% (from 11.5 10^22 A.m^2 to less than 8 10^22 A.m^2 ), either a rate equivalent to that leading to thefull cancellation of the dipole at the time of excursions and reversals of the geomagnetic field.Since the last excursion (LASCHAMP) occurred 41.500 years ago, i.e. about for one obliquity period,solving the question raised, here, takes all its importance by the changes that may occur during themagnetic field inversion at the scale of the Earth
Critical behavior of the Ising model under strong shear: The conserved case
The non-equilibrium phase transitions of the two-dimensional magnetization-conserved Ising model under the action of an external shear field is investigated. This field, that simulates a convective velocity profile with shear rate γ̇, introduces anisotropic effects and forces the system to evolve into non equilibrium states. By employing the short-time dynamics (STD) methodology, it was possible to detect first- and second-order phase transitions, and in this last case the critical exponent were calculated. As a function of the absolute magnetization |M| the system exhibits phase transitions of different order. On the one hand, If |M|=0, the model undergoes a second-order phase transition. The estimated critical temperature Tc depends on γ̇ and two regimes can be distinguished: a power-law regime for low γ̇′s, and a saturation regime at larger values of it. For the investigated shear field interval, the estimated values of the anisotropic critical exponents suggest that the critical behavior is on a crossover between the Ising and mean-field critical behaviors, respectively. On the other hand if |M|>0, the model exhibits for each γ̇ first-order phase transitions, ending in a critical point at |M|=0.Fil: Saracco, Gustavo Pablo. Anisotropic Isoperimetric Problems and Related Topics
This book contains contributions from speakers at the "Anisotropic Isoperimetric Problems & Related Topics" conference in Rome, held from Sep 5 to 9, 2022. The classic isoperimetric problem has fascinated mathematicians of all eras, starting from the ancient Greeks, due to its simple statement: what are the sets of a given volume with minimal perimeter? The problem is mathematically well understood, and it plays a crucial role in explaining physical phenomena such as soap bubble shapes. Variations of the problem, including weighted counterparts with density dependencies, representing inhomogeneity and anisotropy of the medium, broaden its applicability, even in non-Euclidean environments, and they allow for descriptions, e.g., of crystal shapes. At large, the perimeter's physical interpretation is that of an attractive force; hence, it also appears in describing systems of particles where a balance between attractive and repulsive forces appears. A prominent example is that of Gamow's liquid drop model for atomic nuclei, where protons are subject to the strong nuclear attractive force (represented by the perimeter) and the electromagnetic repulsive force (represented by a nonlocal term). Such a model has been shown to be sound, as it explains the basic characteristics of the nuclei, and it successfully predicts nuclear fission for nuclei with a large atomic number. Similar energy functionals model various physical and biological systems, showcasing the competition between short-range interfacial and long-range nonlocal terms, leading to pattern formation. The authors mention, e.g., the Ohta–Kawasaki model for microphase separation of diblock copolymers and the Yukawa potential for colloidal systems. Despite diverse systems, the emergence of microphases follows similar patterns, although rigorously proving this phenomenon remains a challenge. The book collects several contributions within these topics, shedding light on the current state of the art

Mathematics and elections, paradoxes and electoral problems
Mathematics has remarkable applications, not only in natural sciences, as well known, but also in social sciences. In this paper we shall analyze electoral and social choice systems from a mathematical point of view, paying particular attention to the paradoxical and inevitable aspects appearing in choice problems, which are emphasized by the use of mathematics. In the past these applications of mathematics in social sciences have led to Nobel prizes in economy. These subjects are an area of research which is nowadays still alive
