Two-stage artificial intelligence clinical decision support system for cardiovascular assessment using convolutional neural networks and decision trees

    No full text
This paper describes an artificial-intelligence–assisted screening system implemented to support medical cardiovascular examinations performed by doctors. The proposed system is a two-stage supervised classifier comprising a convolutional neural network for heart murmur detection and a decision tree for classifying vital signs. The classifiers are trained to prioritize higher-risk individuals for more time-efficient assessment. A feature selection approach is applied to maximize classification accuracy by using only the most significant vital signs correlated with heart issues. The results suggest that the trained convolutional neural network can learn and detect heart sound anomalies from the time-domain and frequency-domain signals without using any user-guided mathematical or statistical features. It is also concluded that the proposed two-stage approach improves diagnostic reliability and efficiency

Investigation of deformation in bimorph piezoelectric actuator: analytical, numerical and experimental approach

    No full text
Piezoelectric actuators are widely used in many fields such as medical instruments, optics, and aerospace due to their small size and high reliability. Piezoelectric cantilever actuators are used in different configurations such as unimorph and bimorph. In this paper, a 3-D lead zirconate titanate (PZT) bimorph was modeled in COMSOL Multiphysics software for investigation of series and parallel configuration. Theoretical analysis has been developed for the measurement of deformation of a piezoelectric cantilever in inverse piezoelectric effect. The experiment was also performed to examine the deformation of piezoelectric bimorph cantilever. It is found that under a constant applied electric field of 100 V bimorph piezoelectric actuator produces maximum deformation at 100mm length, 30mm width, and 20mm thickness. It is also found that piezoelectric series benders have relatively less deformation than piezoelectric parallel benders. Experimental results show good agreement with theoretical and Numerical results

No abstractHere is published the summary of the contents of 28 unpublished documents of the Archives of Ali Pasha of Ioannina, preserved in the Gennadios library in Athens. The study and photographing of the documents has been accomplished by the author in 1971. Initially he had decided for their publication (in appendix) in the frame of a composite historical study with the title: «The suzerainty of Ali Pasha in Central West Macedonia» as it was announced many times. Due to unforeseen incidents the study was not completed, although new relevant documents were found in other libraries and the whole effort was well ahead. The author expresses the hope that the study will be finally published 4-5 years from now. Those documents were selected, after a relevant report by the University professor Vassilis Panagiotopoulos, from a total of 1499 documents. He was the first to classify them etc. and they are going to be edited (1988) by him and Mr. P. D. Michailaris and published as the 37th publication of the Centre for Neohellenic Research of the National Research Foundation. The contents of the 28 documents vary from political and military e- vents, tax subjects, to klephtes, armatoles and revolutionary movements, and give information on the situation of Central West Macedonia as well as on larger areas of the Ottoman Empire

Fidan, Mehmet Akif, Ayyûb Sabrî Pasha and his Historiography, Doctorate Thesis, Advisor: Prof. Seyfettin Erşahin, p. 308.Ayyûb Sabrî Pasha was born in 1248/1832 in Ermiye which is located in current Greece. His father, Es-Seyyid Şerifü?l-İslam İbnü?l-Hac Ahmed el-Ermiyevî, was also Pasha like him. Although there is no sufficient information about his early life, the amount of information is increasing as looking at his later life. He entered navy as lieutenant on 13 August 1855, and then within a time sequence, he became battalion secretary, regiment secretary, major, district governor and colonel. Finally he got the title of Pasha in 1855 and died with this title.Ayyûb Sabrî Pasha had worked on improvements, which were mainly on the agenda of Ottoman Empire, in navy for more than 10 years, also as being President of commission in some part of those years. When he died, he was the president of Navy Improvement and Accounting Commission.Besides being a statesman and scientist, he was a pedagogue. In 1291(1874) he started to work as beautiful writing teacher in Navy Collage and his 9 year-teaching experience finished when he left navy collage in 1300/1883.He wrote 8 books. Mir'âtü'l-Haremeyn, which is the most comprehensive work on the history of Mecca and Medina, has a special reputation with its volume and content.Ayyûb Sabrî Pahsa was the follower of the previous tradition with his political thoughts and historiography. However, didactive and critical history writings were more dominant in his works. He was a sincere Muslim and a good patriot as seen in his strong reaction against the followers of Vehhabi. In addition, his time?s scientists spoke in praise of him thanks to his works, beside his respectful personality. The amount of critiques to his works also can be seen as a sign for his respectfulness. His scientific specialties, especially historical ones, were also appreciated by later scientists such as Mukrimin Halil Yinanc, who was able to make harsh critiques without any hesitation. 15 S(Safer?02) 1308 / 18 E(Eylül?07) 1306 / 30 E(Eylül?09) 1890 günü vefat ettiğinde Islahât ve Tedkik-i Muhasebât Komisyonu Reisi idi.

Galaxy Zoo:chiral correlation function of galaxy spins

    No full text
Galaxy Zoo is the first study of nearby galaxies that contains reliable information about the spiral sense of rotation of galaxy arms for a sizeable number of galaxies. We measure the correlation function of spin chirality (the sense in which galaxies appear to be spinning) of face-on spiral galaxies in angular, real and projected spaces. Our results indicate a hint of positive correlation at separations less than ~0.5 Mpc at a statistical significance of 2-3 sigma. This is the first experimental evidence for chiral correlation of spins. Within tidal torque theory it indicates that the inertia tensors of nearby galaxies are correlated. This is complementary to the studies of nearby spin axis correlations that probe the correlations of the tidal field. Theoretical interpretation is made difficult by the small distances at which the correlations are detected, implying that substructure might play a significant role, and our necessary selection of face-on spiral galaxies, rather than a general volume-limited sample

β3-adrenoreceptor activity limits apigenin efficacy in ewing sarcoma cells: A dual approach to prevent cell survival

    No full text
Ewing Sarcoma (ES) is an aggressive paediatric tumour where oxidative stress and antioxidants play a central role in cancer therapy response. Inhibiting antioxidants expression, while at the same time elevating intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels, have been proposed as a valid strategy to overcome ES cancer progression. Flavonoid intake can affect free radical and nutritional status in children receiving cancer treatment, but it is not clear if it can arrest cancer progression. In particular, apigenin may enhance the effect of cytotoxic chemotherapy by inducing cell growth arrest, apoptosis, and by altering the redox state of the cells. Little is known about the use of apigenin in paediatric cancer. Recently, β3-adrenergic receptor (β3-AR) antagonism has been proposed as a possible strategy in cancer therapy for its ability to induce apoptosis by increasing intracellular levels of ROS. In this study we show that apigenin induces cell death in ES cells by modulating apoptosis, but not increasing ROS content. Since ES cells are susceptible to an increased oxidative stress to reduce cell viability, here we demonstrate that administration of β3-ARs antagonist, SR59230A, improves the apigenin effect on cell death, identifying β3-AR as a potential discriminating factor that could address the use of apigenin in ES
