Lucini e Marinetti:linguaggi, figure, miti. Due ipotesi di modernità

    No full text

The Other Side of Resilience to Terrorism A Portrait of a Resilient-Healthy City

    No full text
This timely treatise introduces an innovative prevention/preparedness model for cities to address and counter terrorist threats and events. It offers theoretical background, mixed-method research, and tools for creating a resilience-based response to terrorism, as opposed to the security-based frameworks commonly in use worldwide. The extended example of Milan as a “resilient-healthy” city pinpoints sociological, political, and economic factors that contribute to terror risk, and outlines how law enforcement and emergency management professionals can adopt more proactive measures. From these observations and findings, the author also makes recommendations for the professional training and city planning sectors to address preparedness issues, and for community inclusion programs to deter criminal activities in at-risk youth. Features of the coverage: - Summary of sociological theories of terrorism - The Resilience D model for assessing and managing urban terrorist activity - Findings on resilience and vulnerabilities of terror groups - Photo-illustrated analysis of neighborhoods in Milan, describing areas of risk and resilience - Virtual ethnography with perspectives from native residents, recent immigrants, and security experts - Proposals for coordinated communications between resource agencie

Lucini ésotérique et vers-libriste : une interprétation cabaliste et prospective des Armonie sinfoniche

    No full text
The Symphonic Harmonies  are a composite project probably prepared by G. P. Lucini between 1885 and 1888 of which only two poems were published in 1892, those ones that show Lucini’s first verslibrist attempt. These two poems mark the beginning of an experimentation that will be typical of the symbolist and ‘futurist’ poetry of Lucini, who rightfully will be later considered as the inventor of the free verse in Italy, thanks to a revival accomplished by the Italian neo-avant-gardists of the 60’s. Some other parties of his early project, which remained unpublished during his lifetime, show his interests in cabalism. Without underestimating the contributions of the 70’s on this subject, we will propose its possible sources and a more profound esoteric interpretation of these writings, which will also be considered in relation to Lucini’s concurrent and future production. In vitro cytotoxic activity of six Syzygium leaf extracts as related to their phenolic profiles: An untargeted UHPLC-QTOF-MS approach

    No full text
Untargeted metabolomics was used in this study to discriminate the phenolic fingerprints of six Syzygium species. This approach resulted in the annotation of 441 compounds that belong to different phenolic classes, such as flavonoids, lignans, stilbenes, tyrosols, alkylphenols, and phenolic acids. Multivariate data analysis unraveled the main differences between the studied species. S. paniculatum and S. aqueum were the richest sources in terms of phenolic compounds, cumulatively amounting to 355.3 and 266.4 mg/g dry matter, respectively. Nevertheless, S. jambos showed reduced amounts of phenolics, when compared with other species. The biological activity of Syzygium leaf extracts was assessed on MCF-7 breast adenocarcinoma and MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cell lines. Potent estrogenic activity was detected using the SRB assay on MCF-7. This activity may be ascribable to the presence of phenolic compounds miming phytoestrogens such as lignans, stilbenes, and isoflavonoids in the investigated Syzygium extracts. By examining the biological effect of Syzygium extracts against MDA-MB-231 cell lines, the Syzygium gratum leaf extract exhibited the strongest inhibition, with IC50 = 19.4 μg/mL, followed by S. paniculatum (IC50 = 50.9 μg/mL). However, the Syzygium gratum leaf extract showed a potent cytotoxic effect on normal human skin fibroblasts, HSF (IC50 = 1.24 μg/mL), assuming a nonselective cytotoxic effect. On the other hand, other studied Syzygium leaves proved as safe nutraceuticals (IC50 ≥ 100 μg/mL) on HSF cell lines. Our study suggested a possible implication of Syzygium malaccense and Syzygium aqueum leaves as potential estrogenic candidates in relation to their health-promoting phenolic constituents

Single and Combined Fe and S Deficiency Differentially Modulate Root Exudate Composition in Tomato: A Double Strategy for Fe Acquisition?

    No full text
Fe chlorosis is considered as one of the major constraints on crop growth and yield worldwide, being particularly worse when associated with S shortage, due to the tight link between Fe and S. Plant adaptation to inadequate nutrient availabilities often relies on the release of root exudates that enhance nutrients, mobilization from soil colloids and favour their uptake by roots. This work aims at characterizing the exudomic profile of hydroponically grown tomato plants subjected to either single or combined Fe and S deficiency, as well as at shedding light on the regulation mechanisms underlying Fe and S acquisition processes by plants. Root exudates have been analysed by untargeted metabolomics, through liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry as well as gas chromatography–mass spectrometry following derivatization. More than 200 metabolites could be putatively annotated. Venn diagrams show that 23%, 10% and 21% of differential metabolites are distinctively modulated by single Fe deficiency, single S deficiency or combined Fe–S deficiency, respectively. Interestingly, for the first time, a mugineic acid derivative is detected in dicot plants root exudates. The results seem to support the hypothesis of the co-existence of the two Fe acquisition strategies in tomato plants

In vitro and in vivo pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic activity of clofoctol

    No full text
The aim of the study was to examine the in vitro susceptibility of clinical isolates of respiratory pathogens to clofoctol compared with amoxicillin and erythromycin, and to characterize the pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic (PK/PD) relationships of clofoctol using a murine pneumonia infection model. Strains clinically isolated from patients between 2005 and 2009 were used to examine susceptibility: penicillin-susceptible Streptococcus pneumoniae, penicillin-resistant S. pneumoniae, Streptococcus pyogenes, methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus, methicillin-resistant S. aureus, and Haemophilus influenzae. The in vitro activity of clofoctol against clinical isolates has essentially remained unchanged over recent years. The MIC50 and MIC90 of clofoctol against penicillin-resistant S. pneumoniae are lower than that of amoxicillin and erythromycin. The area under curve/minimum inhibitory concentration (AUC/MIC) ratio is the PK/PD parameter that best correlates with in vivo clofoctol efficacy; the value of AUC/MIC required to achieve the maximum effect in this study was 75.5

Disaster Resilience from a Sociological Perspective - Exploring Three Italian Earthquakes as Models for Disaster Resilience Planning

    No full text
Natural disasters traumatize individuals, disrupt families, and destabilize communities.Surviving these harrowing events calls for courage, tenacity, and resilience. Professional planning requires specific types of knowledge of how people meet and cope with extreme challenges. Disaster Resilience from a Sociological Perspective examines three major earthquakes occurring in Italy over a fourteen - year period for a well-documented analysis of populations' responses to and recovery from disaster, the social variables involved, and the participation of public agencies. This timely volume reviews sociological definitions and models of disaster, identifying core features of vulnerability and multiple levels of individual and social resilience. The analysis contrasts the structural and supportive roles of Italy's civil protection and civil defense services in emergency planning and management as examples of what the author terms professional resilience. And testimony from earthquake survivors and volunteers gives voice to the social processes characteristic of disaster. Among the areas covered: Social context for concepts of disaster, vulnerability, risk, and resilience Types of resilience: a multidimensional analysis, focused on a physical, ecological, and ecosystem perspective Findings from three earthquakes: loss, hope, and community. Two systems of organizational response to emergencies Toward a relational approach to disaster resilience planning Plus helpful tables, methodological notes, and appendices For researchers in disaster preparedness, psychology, and sociology, Disaster Resilience from a Sociological Perspective raises--and addresses--salient questions about people and communities in crisis, and how studying them can improve preparedness in an uncertain future
